fish city grill

go once....and you will never return. i was craving for some seafood and decided to try this place. had zero expectations because the menu itself seemed unappetizing. like a previous reviewer wrote...the waitstaff is a little slow on getting to your table and checking on you, even thou theplacewas empty.
the food is very simple...rice and vegetables out of frozen bags and heated, plus whatever kind of fish you ordered. do not know why the fish was so salty. my wife could not eat hers, i ate mine because i was really hungry. there is no need to season fish this much unless there is something to hide. will never eat there again, but would recommend to people to try at least once...i promise you will not return.

a few months after this may 2009 review, theplaceat la cantera closed, thank god. it is inhumane to serve this kind of mediocre food. i think there is another location open in the north side. i hope they improved, and not just moved the same sub-par food to a different location.

okay food...terrible service. thisplaceis average if your talking about food. service is awful. waitstaff appears to be more interested in flirting and cutting up with one another instead of paying attention to their tables. also the restroom smells like something is decomposing in there. wewon't be going back.

very knowledgable staff and great, fresh specials. we went there for dinner on taco tuesday and it was very empty and i don't know why! thisplacehas some amazing menu items. i suggest the fried oyster nachos - if you've never had oysters it will be a great first time experience. i also suggest anything they have on their main board because it changes daily depending on what is most fresh. if i lived in the area i would go back again and again.

when my wife and i want a quietplacewith great food and great service we think fish city grill. good food at a good price. nothing pretentious, just a good time where you can really feel welcome.

it's not surprising to see that most of the negative reviews are by people who have few reviews or mostly negative reviews. do they never visit aplacethat has great food and service like fish city grill or are they just "negative nannies?" and some reviews talk about "expensive" food. have they ever been to landry's or pappadeaux? fish city grill continues to provide very fresh seafood at reasonable prices. i like the daily specials on the chalkboard that highlight the creativity of the chef and i often try them, even though they are more "expensive" than fish and chips. if you want "cheap" then go to long john silvers,

on this occasion i started with the cream of jalapeno soup. always delicious and not too spicy. we tried the crab cake for an appetizer and it's not cheap, but that's because it's made with crab, not krab like many places. very tasty. the herb crusted cod oscar caught my eye this time. topped with a little blue crab and hollandaise, served with asparagus and roasted red potatoes. the fish was moist, the asparagus was small and tender, and the red potatoes were fresh.

don’t know why they call thisplacefish city grill when its name is half shells. anyway, another excellent meal. ate ~6:00 pm on a saturday evening. party of 6 seated promptly at a good large table. don’t get there much later because it filled soon. quick service - had fresh blue point oysters, hot crab bisque. reasonable prices. not too loud to visit.

thisplaceis amazing and has never let me down to provide great food and great service.  the oysters are always briny and delicious.  the oyster nacho's were simply amazing topped with a fried oyster, chipotle tartar sauce and fresh pico de gallo. the wife and i have ordered the alaskan snow crab & shrimp boil for two on many occasions.  it comes on a giant plate with crab, shrimp, potatoes, corn on the cob and andouille sausage, it's a fun date night meal if you like shellfish. don't forget they have a complete bar!

oh yeah...i'll be back. great staff -friendly and informative. the blackened crawfish po'boy was great, served on a perfectly ovened baguette. many places in louisiana get this wrong. kudos to fcg. while this version of a po'boy has been chained, it was done so delectably! fish 'n chips were great -almost. fries came out a little wimpy and less than "hot out of the grease" temp, but our waiter made it right. another kudo. i really wish they had real chips....leftover batter from fried fish, but the hush puppies made it worthwhile. thisplaceis fun, food is good. need to come here and try an adult beverage or two. you gotta try their dessert. just drool on my pic.

we both love oysters on the half shell and are always on the look out for anywhere that serves them fresh and tasty. fish city grill was recommended so we had to try it. we've been here twice because you can't honestly judge aplaceon one try. everything we've ordered has been okay. not fantastic and not bad but okay. it's very clean and the waitstaff are friendly as well as attentive. however, oysters need to be cared for. perhaps it's been luck of the draw...i have no idea but i couldn't in good conscience recommend oysters on the half shell from this restaurant. when you can pick one up and know before it touches your lips that it's ruined, there's a problem. i would like to say, the waitress has been more than kind and immediately doing everything possible to make amends, even though it isn't her fault. it's just really hard after having that particular odor hit your nose and enter your mouth, to even take another bite much less try to eat more oysters. two times is the charm for me. the other food is okay but no oysters. so sad...

love fish city. greatplaceto stop for a brew and an app during a long shopping excursion. or hide out while the game is on and your lady is off shopping.

had beer battered shrimp, w/cole slaw & fresh vegatables. serving of shrimp skimpy, cole slaw bland, vegetables tasteless, bland & skimpy. hushpuppies old & cold. iced tea cloudy. wife had red beans & rice, very bland, little flavor, no sides such as cornbread.
son & grandkids liked it, but they are more impressed wth trendy places with well stocked bars and paying too much for sorry food.
i will avoid this place, if for no other reason than the strong & unpleasant fish smell. i disliked theplaceintensely, as the title says, wannabe trendy wateringhole. just right for people that don't know fresh seafood or real louisiana cooking.

we do enjoy this great little seafood place!. date: 7 nov 2014, tonight we wanted to stretch out for some seafood. we don't visit thisplaceall that often but when we do we really enjoy the grub. we have found fish city grill to be consistent on great service, meal specials, and tasty fresh seafood. the evening began by elyse (waitress) sharing the meals of the day organized by manager/chef chris. the staff prepared a wonderful meal for us to include steamed oysters, house salad, claim chowder, and two delicious salmon entrees. the crew sure can serve up some tasty flavored food...we were definitely pleased with the flavor of our entire meal. thanks to the fish city team for performing so well on this evening...hat's off to manager carlos hernandez, waitress elyse, cooking team roberto, alex, jose', and louis for a well prepared meal. we will sleep well tonight.

outstanding!!! good gosh...crab, crab, crab. all you can eat--crab!. 26 may 14. on this evening we decided to hit this restaurant for "all you can eat crab legs." wow, the crab was outstanding! the flavor of the crab meat was sweet all the way through. most restaurants have a hard time cooking crab requiring one to use a dipping sauce or melted butter. the wait staff and kitchen kept the crab coming with no delays. we often visit this restaurant and have found it to be quite consistent with food quality delivering a wide range of food choices to consider. i would highly recommend thisplaceto bring friends and family to enjoy a wonderful reasonable meal. the staff no doubt has it's act together cooking and serving. thanks again fish city grill crew (chris hillhouse-general manager and waiter-scott) for serving up us another great evening meal.

awesome seafood and service. 23 oct 11. this restaurant can sure cook up some great seafood. the service and food choices made for a wonderful experience. the staff (chris hillhouse-general manager, chef john, and waiter pablo) went out of their way to serve up a superb meal. the staff prepared steamed oysters even though this option was not listed on their menu. the meals we ordered consisted of steamed oysters, oyster nachos, claim chowder, gumbo, salmon, and shrimp prepared in several different ways. the desserts were quite tasty...so be sure to leave some room to enjoy a bit of fish city grill sweetness. we will return some day soon as thisplaceis sure to be a local favorite for many. thanks fish city grill crew for serving up a great meal with attentive service.

eh, thisplaceis ok. i sat at the bar, drinks were weak, i didnt completely trust the fish i got but it was ok. i definitely wouldn't get oysters from here. it smelled extremely fishy inside, i won't be back.

fish wish. i think the daily specials are the way to go at fish city grill. everything looks great here from the dark roux gumbo, the shrimp and grits, to their cod based fish and chips, all of which my friends had. they said that the deep dark brown roux and a good file (sassafras) flavor to it. just the way i like it. when asked if the fish and chips were as good as those at zeke's, she honestly said that they weren't. i guess that was a loaded question. i don't think you can find anyplacethat will beat zeke's, but the one's here still were top notch by looks alone and quite good flavor-wise.

i had the black pepper crusted ahi tuna with lemon aioli. it arrived on a nice buttery bed of white rice with equally buttery sauteed green beans. this was one of the best grilled fish meals i have had in recent memory. the tuna was flaky and juicy, accentuated by the lemony aioli sauce; it was just what i was craving for. once again, this was a blackboard special, so it is not on the menu, but if everything on the fresh fish menu is like this, i don't think you can go wrong.

we then finished the evening with peach cobbler. this was not the heavy syrup laden cobbler that i have had in the past, but had several slices of peaches in a lighter sauce. the dough was light as well. neither thick nor exceedingly thin, the crust had the right bite to it. the ice cream was good. probably was blue bell and that is not a bad thing. we all enjoyed the dessert immensely.

this restaurant is not very big by any stretch of the imagination. the bar takes up a lot of space and is the focal point upon entering. there is a couple of rows of booth seating at right angles along the front and right side of the restaurant as well as a number of tables at the center. i kind of felt crushed by the setup even though it was prior to heavy dinner service. there is a divider between the bar and the tables that was not very photogenic, therefore i skipped taking a picture of the area.

the server was very attentive to our needs, bringing us malt vinegar, replenishing our glasses and checking up on us at various times throughout the meal. i guess the best thing that can be said about fish city grill came from my friend who said, "we found another good restaurant. i agree wholeheartedly.
