eva's boulangerie

i was in town for a conference, where i was a part of the cupcake wars live stage show at the eccles theatre, on southmainstreet in salt lake city, utah. every morning i walked from my hotel to the theatre, and every morning i stopped a little place called eva’s bakery along the way for my morning coffee. one morning, mr. beet, myself, and a few friends i was with decided to linger a little longer and grab breakfast/lunch instead of our usual quick in and out visit. it was a beautiful spring morning so after we placed our order at the counter, we grabbed our coffees and sat at a table outside.

chef and owner, charlie perry could have rested on his laurels with the wildly successful eva restaurant. instead, taking a cue from his family’s rich culinary heritage, he decided to open eva’s bakery – a savory and sweet slice of paris, right in downtown slc. amongst the light cafe and deli fare (available breakfast and lunch) sits the piece de resistance though – daily fresh baked breads. these artisan loaves couldn’t be farther away from their mass produced siblings lining supermarket shelves – made with organic, local flour from logan utah. what’s more, stop by on thusdays and snag a baguette for a measly buck, during one of their many great promos. photo used with permission from slceats.com eva’s bakery 155 smainst salt lake city, ut 84101 (801) 355-3942 www.evasbakeryslc.com

i have this slight obsession with paris.  maybe my love of french pastries is to blame or the way the city is synonymous with romance is responsible.  either way, i’m aching to visit the city.  i want to see all the touristy places, and the opera (of course) but most of all i want to sit in a little cafe, sip on a cup of coffee while people-watching, munch of freshly-baked pastries and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. the bright storefront can’t be missed onmainstreet. unfortunately a trip to paris is not in my immediate future so to get my parisian cafe fix in salt lake city i’ve been going to eva’s boulangerie, otherwise known as eva’s bakery .  brought to us by the same owners as the mediterranean tapas-serving eva’s also onmainstreet, both restaurants are a few blocks’ away from each other but have much different vibes.  i’ve long been a fan of eva’s for a post-work dinner or sunday brunch , but the bakery version has a daytime focus with laid back coffee shop atmosphere. th

or if you have yet to visit paris, now you can have a taste of it right here in salt lake. this boulangerie, simply meaning bread store, now graces onmainstreet, specializing in fresh breads and european style pastries.

every now and then a place pops up that is so different, so exciting, so….unique to salt lake that i can’t help but get excited about it. when i first spotted its bright blue and yellow facade, i knew that eva boulangerie was that kind of place. located at 155 smainst, between braza express and the (now closed) bayleaf bar and grub, eva boulangerie stands out from the crowd as something special. the front of the building screams paris, which accurately reflects the european bakery ethos located within. as you might guess by the name, eva boulangerie is owned and operated by the same folks behind eva restaurant. charlie perry is the chef/owner behind eva, and he’s had a strong desire to open a cafe/bakery in slc that helps transport people to another part of the world, through both food and atmosphere. it took charlie over nine months to renovate the bakery space into something reminiscent of a parisian bakery. immediately upon entry you’ll notice gorgeous blue, yellow and white floor
