cozy. it was pretty cool to see the racks of breads from where i was sitting. i must apologize to the twofrenchwomen sitting to my right. i cannot help but eavesdrop on such a beautiful language.

the stuffedfrenchtoast is magnificent. they do not skimp on the fruit. the filling is sweet yet it melds perfectly with the fruit atop the toast. i am historically hesitant when it comes to fruit in heated dishes. i am very picky when it comes to something like this or like a fruit pie.

i will come back to give thefrenchonion soup a taste. if the toast is any indication as to their ability, i expect my favorite soup to be given the treatment it deserves.

eva's bakery has some things going for it. it's not too expensive. it has a nice, convenient downtown location. the atmosphere is quaint and unpretentious (if you don't include the relief society dyed-blonde thirty-somethings who talked like woo girls enjoying a girls' mid-day out). but, like always, it comes down to the food. the food is king. i started with thefrenchonion soup. now, i must admit, my favorite component of afrenchonion soup is the cheesy soaked-in-oniony-broth crostino on top. (well, to be entirely candid, the farinaceous part of any recipe is usually my favorite.) the soup included, not one, but three cheesy crostini. and they were money. wonderfully soggy. mmm. the sou

i have this slight obsession with paris.  maybe my love offrenchpastries is to blame or the way the city is synonymous with romance is responsible.  either way, i’m aching to visit the city.  i want to see all the touristy places, and the opera (of course) but most of all i want to sit in a little cafe, sip on a cup of coffee while people-watching, munch of freshly-baked pastries and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. the bright storefront can’t be missed on main street. unfortunately a trip to paris is not in my immediate future so to get my parisian cafe fix in salt lake city i’ve been going to eva’s boulangerie, otherwise known as eva’s bakery .  brought to us by the same owners as the mediterranean tapas-serving eva’s also on main street, both restaurants are a few blocks’ away from each other but have much different vibes.  i’ve long been a fan of eva’s for a post-work dinner or sunday brunch , but the bakery version has a daytime focus with laid back coffee shop atmosphere. th

so, here is what happened. i walked into eva’s bakery early on a friday morning – and was immediately on vacation somewhere romantic, european, and fancy. no joke. this charming, delightful spot might be one of my new favorite spots in salt lake city. i missed the media opening a few months back, and upon entering this lovely, vintage feeling bakery–i began kicking myself for not canceling whatever it was i had going on that day so i could attend. i met a good friend of mine for a pre-work breakfast and was so amazed by how large eva’s bakery was inside and how vintage everything felt – from the tiled floors and walls, to the display cases of baked goods. even before i ate or drank anything, i just wanted to hang out in this beautiful place. we ordered off their brunch menu: the brunch pie (ham, gruyere, easy eggs, bechamel sauce, and argula $9) and the stuffedfrenchtoast (lemon cream cheese filling and blueberry compote $8). both were outstanding. delicate and simple, yet rich and f

high quality. coffee census jan 2013 morning bun and mug of coffee $4.

classicfrenchbaked goods professionally prepared:croissants, brioche, gateau basque, st honore, artisan breads and america standards like cookies and scones.
sandwiches like croque madame and pizzaish flatbreads plus a few hot dishes for slightly more substantial meals. wonderfully savory onion soup. of the half dozen or so pastries we have tried so far the gateau st honore was the best example of the careful preparation here..i picked this since it involves about five different parts..mille feuille type base, pastry cream, pate a choux type ball, caramel glaze and chantilly cream. all parts were nicely done and the sum was truly delicious.

friendly service. traditional ambiance. a great, if calorically dangerous, addition to downtown.
