over-priced, but yummy.. one of the bestroastbeef sandwiches in the city, if only cause they put creole mustard on it. also it was 12 dang dollars!
on second thought, theroastbeef was kind of dry and the gravy that was added to the sandwich kinda tasted like it was made from a packet.
cool atmosphere, warm and really quiet. lots of pictures on the wall and apparently you can add your own picture on the way out if nobody is noticing( you know who you are).
i will be back to try the shrimp poboy as soon as i can.
i just have to pawn a few things first.

worth the drive, the parking spot search and the line. the poboys are amazing, and my second favorite only to parkway. friendly staff, not much seating, so go early. fried oyster was delish. i hear people rave about theroastbeef here, saying it's the best in town. it probably is, but i'm more of a fried poboy fan, so i stick with shrimp and oysters.

domilie’s is new orleans, it’s always up there in any list of best po boys in the city, and i was excited to find out why! it’s tucked away on a quiet, nondescript street well and truly away from the french quarter, which suited us just fine; while we loved the craziness of it all, it was nice to get out and see a different part of the city. we actually walked the full 5 miles (8km) from our hotel to domilise’s, taking our time and enjoying the stroll down magazine street, through the garden district, with a stop at district donuts sliders brew for a donut to fuel the journey . when we finally got the the iconic lemon yellow, weather boarded eatery, we were hungry and ready to put all those burnt calories back into our bellies, and then some. we were welcomed warmly like old friends overdue for a visit. we were happily and proudly guided through our options, and invited to please take a seat while our sandwiches were put together. it was like checking into the most wonderful sandwich hotel on earth! we ordered two po boys to share, theroastbeef (top) and the fried shrimp (bottom), both

i had been dying to hear real southern accents, and the ladies behind the counter fulfilled this desire immediately. they were really sweet, and we could tell this was a popular neighborhood place.... we ended up trying two sandwiches here: the fried shrimp and theroastbeef. the shrimp had a really delicious spicy/sweet sauce, and it was my favorite of the two. theroastbeef was a little bit dry, but the sauce on it was amazing.

our first stop was domilise’s restaurant, which immediately reminded me of a smaller/southern version of a south buffalo bar. even though there were a large amount of tourists, you could tell there were some regulars in there too. we tried theroastbeef (cut a little too thick and overcooked), fried shrimp (great mix of shrimp and sauces) and fried oysters (hands down the best, the flavor of the oyster shined through the batter).

headed out to domilise's for my first po'boy. i really liked tasty sauce on their fried shrimp sandwich. after getting fat onroastbeef and fried oysters, we made our way to parkway's. i have to say i thought their po'boys were overall better. i especially liked the alligator sausage and fried pickles.

classic nola poboy. everyone should come to domilises once in their life for either aroastbeef or shrimp po-boy with a barq's rootbeer. it's a new orleans rite of passage.
that being said, i like other po-boys more than domilise's, but it is still a great sandwich.

taps.........it's over............ no.
all hype. yesteryear.......maybe.
the older bartender is nice.
but young tubby behind the counter needs a backhand and i doubt thatroastbeef was cooked there.
parkway was closed and that's why we went there.
turn out the lights.

doesn't live up to the hype. how old is domilise's? for me, it has existed since the beginning of time. whenever friends or family would go to the zoo, we'd afterward stop at domilise's for po-boys. i wonder if it was here that i had my first po-boy. can you remember your first po-boy?
riding around uptown, domilise's feels a bit out of place now-a-days. it wasn't that long ago that most of uptown along the river was working class. in the last ten years or so, however, it has really gentrified. there are a few pockets of holdovers from the past, but those pockets are being sucked up by bobos and yuppies, ready to buy renovated shotguns for the same price as mcmansions out in the suburbs.
domilise's belongs to one of those vanishing pockets. tucked away a block off tchoupitoulas and jefferson, at the corner of annunciation and bellecastle, domilise's is easy to miss if you're looking for a restaurant that carries as large a reputation as it does. besides a hand-painted board on the side of a windowless building in need of fresh paint, there's nothing to tell you you've found the oldest continuously open po-boy shop in the world. i'm not sure if that title is accurate, so if you can name one older, i'm all ears.
when you walk in, and this is no easy thing to do because many days the shop is inexplicably closed, you get a whiff of food history. that is, if you're able to get in before the line forms. on my last visit, i got there just as they opened and my order was ready minutes later. a quick look around makes you wonder if you're in a grandmother's home because there are familial pictures all around. the pictures are often of celebrity patrons, like the mannings. across the cramped area is the bar with the tender who looks as old as the restaurant. at the entrance, though, is where the food magic happens. shout your order if you want and grab a seat.
on this most recent trip, i decided on a largeroastbeef. i'm doing a taste and compare of all theroastbeef po-boys i can find. leidenheimer is their baker, and theirroastbeef is cooked in-house. to be honest, it wasn't as good as i remember it being. the beef is sliced in large deli-like slices and then gravy is poured on top. this technique, i think is inferior to the one where theroastbeef falls apart in the gravy and the soup feast is spooned into the bread. domilise's is a bit of an oddity in their rb po-boy prep. there are no tomatoes and they also use creole mustard as a condiment. the first novelty is disappointing to me. the second is great. even if theroastbeef isn't my favorite, the mustard gives it an added kick. i wonder how it would taste on parkwayroastbeef.
at $11 (tax included), theroastbeef is one of the most expensive and under-stuffed in the city -- perhaps showing that despite its looks, the restaurant realizes it's no longer a working class clientele it serves, but instead, one that wishes to get a working class experience. in that way, i think the domilise's of the past is a relic, and what is there, despite the continuity in ownership and service, has lost its former glory. but i don't think you can really understand what a traditional po-boy stop is without going to domilise's.

outstanding!. just brought a visiting friend and his colleague for lunch and we split 2 large shrimp, 1 large oyster and a smallroastbeef. the shrimp was right on, as usual, the oyster was good. i couldn't partake in theroastbeef (too full). as i told my friend, i remember the bartender and ms. dottie as far back as when i first started going there in the late 70's, when i was a teenager .

they simply have the best shrimp po-boys in town.

i came here quite a few times with some buddies that were from no about about 7 years ago. i loved the large fully dressedroastbeef when i used to come here with them. i went by this monday for a sandwich i had thought about for years and was surprised to find exactly what i remembered. same amazing bread, same moistroastbeef, and same delicious gravy. thank you for keeping this exactly the way i remembered it!

great. like most of the other reviewers, i have to say that theroastbeef isn't that great, nor is the gravy. but the oysters my friends, they are perfect. domilise's has the best oyster sandwich in the city. get it with swiss cheese and gravy and you'll be happy. plus the atmosphere is cozy and timeless.

over-rated. we live 1/2 block off annunciation and are by this place frequently. theirroastbeef po-boys use pre-cooked packinghouse beef and canned "gravy".

closed on sunday, monday & thursday.

redeeming factor is cold beer in cans. hard to find canned beer around here. we cycle & need cans to carry on bikes.

remember to step up to men's room.
