bar staff knowingly overcharged us.. i wanted to share the experience that we had last night at craft. i took our staff out to celebrate the completion of a project we had been working on. the 10 of us, had an initial round of drinks at the bar.
my wife was presented the bill and promptly settled it up. fortunately, we were all still at the bar when the bar tenders went to close out the bill because i overheard one bar tender say to the other that he accidently charged us for an extra bottle of champagne.
i can appreciate that mistakes happen, however, the way that the bar tenders handled the situation led me to seriously question their ethics and integrity.
the bar tenders did not bring their mistake to my wife's attention (who paid the bill). 10 minutes went by and it became clear that their intention was to pocket the excess payment. i had to prompt my wife to review the bill and see if there was an extra bottle of champagne on it.
things would have been fine if they had brought the matter to our attention after they realized their mistake. but, the fact that they were not indicating any intention of reimbursing my wife after overcharging her speaks poorly about the quality of the bar staff.
when we brought the matter to the attention of the bar staff, they pretended that they were unaware of the mistake. clearly, they were unaware that i had overheard their conversation 10 minutes earlier.
after a bit of hassle with the floor manager we were able to have the initial payment refunded and made a new credit card payment. this time, my wife left a 5% tip instead of her initial 15% tip. i personally feel that, given the circumstances, the 5% was too much. however, many in our party have worked in the industry, including my wife and i, and my wife didn't have it in her to leave no tip at all.
regardless, shortly after settling up the bill, the bar tender had the balls to communicate with one of the members of our party and complained to her that we'd left him such a poor tip. my message to him, is that, the tip aside, he should consider himself lucky to have a job. your tip is something that is earned and poor ethical practices are not to be rewarded.
