thoughbbqis in the name, barbeque is only one portion of their rather large menu. they also have steaks, burgers, seafood, and yes, new mexican cuisine. we went here to add a bit of diversity to our diet, and so i settled on the pulled porkbbqsandwich. apparently the smothered in salsa diablo was featured on the "heat seekers" show. they brought mine on the side, and it's definitely a sizzling red chile blend. but nothing overwhelming. in fact we thought it was quite tasty, and i dipped my wonderfully cooked fries into it throughout the meal. couldn't really tell you if the pulled pork was any good on its own, because it was completely drenched in the chipotle barbeque sauce - just as advertised. the brioche bun is perfect for handling the moist sandwich, and managed to stay firm. overall, an excellent barbeque sandwich. mrs. rjg, despite the premise of why we were there, ended up ordering the chile relleno with the christmas chile. she reports that the cheese was fantastic (asadero she suspects), and both the red and green had splendid flavors and a nice kick. our first meal here was clearly a success!

service was at best moderate. we were a party of 7. drinks weren't refilled until we were almost done, thebbqsampler platter and mac and cheese was so-so, the game burger was good. desserts were lovely. the tip was automatically charged and the waiter would not make eye contact after taking our orders.

there are many good restaurants in santa fe. this is not one of them. the food was mediocre at best, the service was sluggish and awkward and the setting is chaotic. they also consider themselves to be abbqrestaurant, yet have only threebbqdishes on the menu.

bad cow girls!!. i have tried eating at cow girls exactly three times since 2007 while visiting, then a second time visiting and most recent a third time after moving to santa fe. each and every time i found the food to be among the most horrid, bland, mediocre, ill prepared foods i think i have ever had at any establishment i have been to and we go out to eat a great deal of the time, probably 90% of our meals are taken out? i ordered the babyback ribs and a side salad with ranch dressing. beans and a veggie came on the side. the ribs were posibly the worst prepared, worstbbqsauce i have ever tasted? they had been smoked or cooked until the meat was mushy, and fell apart with a fork, (not in a good way) thebbqsauce was bland, tasteless and almost un-ettable? the entire entree was cold and tasted terrible. even the side salad was bad, lettuce wilted and too much onion and other junk on top along with a very cheap quality ranch dressing, (probably from some restaurant supply house?) i cannot recall one item i found even good. it was so bad i called for a manager and sent it back, (something i almost never have done before) the manager did deduct the un-eaten meal from our check and offered to get me something else, my appetite was gone by then and i just waited for breakfast to eat again. this place calls itself abbqjoint? if they did not have a liquer license i suspect they would not remain in business for very long on the merits of their food? its basically a pool hall hangout for the younger crowd and holligans? the place across the street, "whole hogg" is far, far better if you want bbq, even then they are not perfect, but way better than cowgirls bbq?

gluten free bbq. the chef has celiac and one of the owner's daughters is gluten sensitive so the kitchen and waitstaff were very good about knowing what was in everything. thebbqand jerk sauces were gluten free and fantastic. everything was very good though how hot things were was not always accurately labeled. we had a fantastic time.

a few notes though. this place has the reputation of being child-friendly and i would not say it is. my kids had a great time but that was because we hit it off with the owner and his family. at night, this is a loud and rowdy place (i went there without my kids another time to drink so don't think this was just because we were there on new years eve). also, we had reservations and were first seated in the bar area in front of a door to an outside area where people were smoking. when we asked for a different table because it was freezing and loud and smoky, the waitress was a total bitch. i had to go to the hostess and complain strongly. we were then moved to an appropriate place. but it was still on the way to the pool room and my ten year old had something odd said to him by an obviously intoxicated person. so, no, not kid-friendly for dinner.

our second wait person was quite good, though i think our having clearly bonded with the owner during our meal helped assure good service.

all in all, fantastic food and a great relief to those with gluten and dairy limitations. but loud.

we had a second dinner a few nights later. this time we were brought immediately to a dining room far from both the bar and the pool hall with other families. our waitress was the nasty one from our first night. she clearly recognized us and was on her very best behavior. the food was again fantastic. so i would modify my statement about the restaurant not being kid-friendly. as long as it isn't new years eve and are not seated anywhere near the bar (which was still quite loud the second night, particularly after the live music started).
