rude and unpleasant.. went here or a coffee with a friend the other day and was blown away by the sheer rudeness of the woman behind the counter. surely "i'll be with you in a minute" isn't that hard to say. being ignored for minutes at a time while ordering and then again when trying to pay is just really poor customer service. her levels of aggression were really unnecessary too - do your customers a favour, get a new job!

places like this won't exist for long judging by our experience. terrible coffee - bitter and burnt. and the food? well mine was returned twice after which i gave up. sloppy cheap bacon and cold corn fritters. poached eggs that were cooked in so much vinegar that's all you could taste. cold cheap toast. really all just not good. luckily as a newtown local i have plenty of other excellent choices to spend my breakfast dollar

the same male staff member, see prior review below, told me he wouldn't serve me again, when i last visited on monday night, the 8th of february. also, the same guy does not regularly clean the tables and does not bring customers cutlery when they order something to eat. that's bad customer service too! this lack of service was unjustified and inappropriate as there was no reason at all for him to deny me service upon my next visit. this denial of service is not based on anything, rather on a prejudiced non-professional personal opinion. it is not based on facts or evidence.


rude male staff member & management unresponsive towards complaints: 1. guy was very rude to me at the customer counter, sun 24th of may. i entered the cafe at approximately 8pm, and the guy took my order and when i asked him to wipe my table, saying 'can you wipe my table please- he replied 'you need to talk nicer'. excuse-me, but i said 'can you wipe my table please'. that was polite, calm and reasonable. he also talked back to me, saying it's already clean. however, when i looked at it, it looked dirty. i then walked out because he did not want to wipe the table. that was a reasonable request and in this climate of covid-19, i would expect my table to be wiped. after all, i asked him nicely and politely, saying 'can you wipe my table please', and as soon as i said that, he angrily and unprofessionally replied, ' you need to talk nicer'. that shows his reluctance to be polite to customers, inability to comply with social distancing and health regulations. why can't the guy just wipe my table, after all, it is a reasonable request and is simply enough to oblige without objecting and being rude. 2. when i complained to management, they refused to take any accountability saying i was mistaken and talking about a different cafe and telling me not to write reviews: 'we wipe our tables and chairs after each and every customer.you must be talking about another cafe! please do not write reviews without ensuring you are on the correct cafe site" (response from management)

fantastic food and coffee, the sticky date cake is in my opinion the best one in sydney! also love the warm chicken salad, the beef burger and the pineapple cocktail (it's actually fruit frappe)! the service is quite relax but friendly. it's the café to go on a relax friday night for a wonderful meal or sunday afternoon for a nice coffee and tea.

incredibly bad service. my berry smoothie tasted like water. i asked for more flavour to be added and she snatched it away. when it was eventually brought back to me it clearly had some stuff poured in but i had to stir it in myself. not a word, let alone a smile or apology from the staff - she didn't even make eye contact. it was quite horrible. the staff were very intimidating! had some lovely fruit toast but will never return.

i'm not one to leave reviews and rather just not return. but after going to this cafe and experiencing some of the worst customer service ever i feel the need to warn others. most of the wait staff (except for one) were very rude and hostile. rather than being welcoming, made us feel like we were an inconvenience. the guy behind the counter who took my money was by far the worst of all of them. there are so many great cafes in newtown. this is not one of them.

very ordinary food with poor service. coffee quite good although orders were all mixed up. would not be back purely based on how filthy the cafe is. even our menus were appalling, with caked on food and all torn. reading it was very difficult! am surprised they haven't had food safety breathing down their neck.

i wish i could rate zero. first let me start that i got gastro from some halloumi in the salad i had. i was taken to hospital by ambulance. the food in the pastry case also looked very stale and old, so i wouldn’t be surprised i got sick.
the service was absolutely horrendous. long story short, i waited for an hour until my salad arrived. my friend’s salad took additional 30mins (so in total 90 mins!) there were only a few customers at that time, and i saw at least five staff working. i can never imagine how they could be so disorganised and could not care less.

i have been here on both the weekend and during the week. the times i was here were very different experiences. both times i ordered the canadian waffles and the waffles themselves were cooked quite well with a great serving of bacon. the similarity between both days ended there. on the weekend the service was poor but staff seemed in happy spirits though. on the weekday visit service was not as bad(probably due to less people)but the waitress didn't seem too knowledgable of the menu and not too happy. the dish was much better on the weekend with banana, bacon & waffles cooked perfectly and covered in maple syrup(def suggest) but the dish was cooked very differently on the weekday - minimal maple syrup(to the point i asked for more)banana was not cooked & had no syrup on it & bacon had no maple syrup on it and appeared & tasted more like a side then a part of the dish. great serving sizes & cakes looked very good though however are a bit expensive at $8.90 a slice. i probably wont return due to the service on weekend and food on weekday.

an ok location for a hangout

if i was living in newtown, then this would be my hangout spot to catch up with friends. i often see this café always full, and i can understand why.

the coffee is alright here and can't say it is the best i have had. they do have a variety of cakes available. the one cake that i did try was the cheese cake and that was quite nice.

very poor service. food and coffee was good. but the chef was screaming and shouting. they cannot handle a busy cafe. i am not sure if i recommend this cafe.

somebody call the police, i think the staff here are being held against their will. i don't think i have ever seen a more miserable and grubby bunch of staff. the tables are devoid of condiments so your eggs benedict will get no salt, because it won't be offered. both food and coffee are very ordinary. we will not be back.

great food and coffee. service is pretty bad and the atmosphere definitely doesnt help. if they renovated and hired better staff, it'd be a 5.

great hours with it being open till midnight. perfect for students (like myself) who do like to study at cafes!

however.. terrible service and not clean. the first time i went, i was ignored and then went up to the counter to grab my own menu. the waitress who served me was quite rude as well and didn't even give me a smile? i mean it's not necessary, but it would be nice. while i ordered and began to work, i noticed many flies and small insects (inside the cabinet where the food is too.. - but quite common to be honest..). the thing which really put me off was the mini cockroach which crawled on the table.. i couldn't even stand sitting there anymore..

i ended up grabbing only the vegan brownie and a chai latte. the brownie was amazing and very decadent but the chai was off, it just wasn't good (or fresh?)..

i did go a second time and sat outside. again, i went unnoticed and the staff on that day were just rude, disinterested and uncaring. won't be back again.. until maybe the cafe is cleaner and you get more respectful staff.

points for the brownie! and being able to study there without anyone caring about you..

we stopped by here for a coffee as one of the few places open later in the evening that will just serve coffee as most coffee shops shut by later afternoon or only restaurants serving meals. it is located on king street. service is fairly friendly.

went with a chai latte and latte. they tasted fine but wish it was hotter in temperature.
