we had a zomato meet-up for high tea here the other day. situated in the chelsea village centre in somerset west, i would probably never have come upon it had it not been for this meeting. it was a happy find.
we were welcomed with a glass of champagne upon arrival before we took our places at the long tables set especially for us (decorative rose petals and a fresh 'crunchie' for each person to take home and all - how sweet?!) the staff were very friendly, though not always attentive. but in their defence, we were a big group managed by few staff members, who were also attending a tea party at the same time.
the place itself is light with many windows, almost like a sun room, and plants, including potted and hanging ones, creating a very peaceful/serene atmosphere. there is in fact a flower shop right opposite the café, from which i won the raffle bouquet might i add!
at the table we had baguettes from schoon de companje in stellenbosch (known for their bread), served with two dips: a thai green curry mayo and a moroccan coriander pesto mayo. the mayo is apparently home-made, by which i'm impressed. i remember someone describing mayonnaise as 'complex' in a prescribed reading for a philosophy module on theory of complexity that i took, which speaks for itself.
before we had our so-called mains, we got to taste some wines from delaire graff and waterkloof, which were a nice addition. then i got to try the frenchie and bree, tomato and beetroot chutney toasties - both were simple and homey yet moreish - and the ny baked cheesecake and the flourless chocolate cake. unfortunately the consistency of the former was a bit off in my opinion and the chocolate cake lacked a certain ingredient i can't put my finger on (not flour obviously). nevertheless, i love the flourless and the gluten and sugar free cheesecake options for us occasional health nuts.
the cappuccino afterwards ended off alovelyafternoon on a high note.
