father's day: cold, overpriced, and leftovers.. i sent in this letter to management. i did hear back from phillip, one of the managers at this location who seemed to be making a sincere effort to resolve the serious concerns i addressed in my letter. however, it has now been a week since my last contact and although he promised to call me it has yet to occur, even after i called and left a message yesterday. if i hear back i will update my review accordingly, but for now all i can say is as of now i absolutely do not recommend eating here. also, upon looking at other reviews [on yelp], it feels as if the food issue occurs quite often and my experience was not an isolated one.

"i visited your establishment this father's day, june 15, 2014, for a 7:00 p.m. reservation and our experience was not only an absolute disappointment, it was astonishing to me how a restaurant would offer a buffet of such poor quality to their patrons.

i have visited your restaurant many times, most recently to celebrate my birthday and i have always been exceptionally happy with the service, food and attention i received at castaway. for this reason i thought it would be agreatplace to celebrate father's day.

your father's day buffet was an entirely different story. your establishment could not be bothered to keep the food hot, the buffet areas clean or keep the food well stocked. i was charged the same amount per buffet as guests who arrived at 9 a.m. and i expected the same quality or at the bare minimal a similar quality as your earlier guests. instead the condition of the food and buffet areas not only sub-par, it felt belittling to be served it and expected to enjoy it like nothing was wrong.

i had a serving of lamb from the carving station and upon taking my first bite i realized it was cold. not warm, cold. the gravy and biscuits were so cold and the biscuit so hard, i literally could not eat it because i felt i may lose a tooth in the process. my sister's eggs benedict may possibly have been delicious warm but cold were a different story. my honey-glazed ham was so cold it was sitting on a mixture of what looked like a thick syrup of pineapple glaze and was inedible. the wild rice was cold and hard as were the majority of your other available food items, including but hardly limited to your waffles, fried chicken, potatoes, baked beans, bbq brisket etc.

the only foods i found of somewhat acceptable quality were a salmon dish (which was served warm, definitely not hot) and a plate of pasta from your pasta station. at minimum the pasta was hot but still disappointing as you were all out of any sauces, other than pesto, and your pasta looked as if it had been sitting in the bowl for disconcerting length of time. by the time we made it to dessert the churros were cold and rock solid and there no cappuccino in the bin for my father to enjoy. at this point we were told by your staff that the buffet was on "last call" and that if we wanted anything else it was our last chance, at approximately 8:20 p.m.

it appeared that the castaway staff stopped bothering to restock food items well before our reservation time of 7p.m., leaving us with a buffet of what appeared to be and tasted like left-overs. we were not even allowed the opportunity to try some items on your menu because you were already "out" and felt the last guests were not deserving of these food options. if castaway had absolutely no problems with accepting reservations for specific time, 7 p.m., there is a reasonable expectation that we would at the very least be served hot food and not the entire day's leftovers, cold leftovers at that.

not only was the quality of food in a poor state the buffet display and presentation itself was in disarray. there was food spilled everywhere from previous guests that no one had even bothered to tidy up, and i noticed many of the "sterno" heat cans under your food stuff were out (likely the reason your food was already cold). despite these issues that were obviously in need of attention, staff members stood around buffet areas chit chatting. this observation is not inclusive of our server, a young blonde woman who was exceptionally bright, helpful and accommodating despite obvious dissatisfactions with everything else.

we should have walked through the buffet before we sat down, or perhaps even walked out after we realized the state your buffet was in, but my father was too polite to say much as this was our "treat" to him. on the other hand, i was too embarrassed to bring it up and instead hoped the buffet would improve and that our first impressions were wrong. needless to say it didn't and my father's day consisted of me apologizing for the way your establishment chose to conduct itself that night. i spent $200 on a meal for 4 people and felt that i could have paid much less elsewhere and at the very least enjoyed hot food. great view, happy hour and sunset menu were perfect. as everyone else mentions, the view truly is amazing. i surprised my husband and took him to this hidden gem for his birthday. sitting on the patio around 5pm is very relaxing, especially when you have happy hour prices to enjoy a glass of wine (some wines $6 a glass, domestic beers $3). we also were able to enjoy an appetizer for $6 that is a must try. it was the best spinach artichoke dip i've ever had. they also gave us bread with butter and the best pesto dip to spread. the prices on the main menu were high, but i had looked at the sunset menu before our visit and was not disappointed. for about $22 per person you get a three course meal, which is agreatdeal! for the first course my husband got the salad and i ordered the chicken tortilla soup, both of which were delicious. for the main course i had salmon and my husband had the prime rib. both were just right. the sauce on the salmon wasgreatand it was served with quinoa and broccoli cooked just right. the mash potatoes that came with the prime rib were also great! the third course is a piece of cheesecake, which was the perfect way to end our meal.
side note *if you are used to fine dining or work in fine dining, you will notice that the building could use some updating, as well as a few other things, but that didn't make my experience bad :)

nice. . .but. . .. if it weren't for the god-awful coffee, everythoing would have been perfect. my wife and i had a ncie brunk--nay, make that agreatbrunch--lots of variety, fresh, tasty food, prompt, courteous service, smiling faces from all the employees. but . . . this experience was cupped off with mediocre coffee (if it can be considered that good). i mentioned to the waitress and later to the manager, whom i asked to voice my concern with, is that i a so-so- meal can be made better by a good cup of coffee; conversely, an otherwise very good meal, dining experience can be offset by distasteful coffee. i didn't ask, but i think this was just some ordinary commercial brand like hills bros or folgers that restaurants get. i would think that a restaurant the caliber of castaways would source their coffee from a premium shelf at a local roaster or distributor.

disappointed. this used to be agreatplace.
we went there with the same expectations and were surprised ... not pleasantly.
had reservations at 7:30 and were seated 8:15. ordered drinks, soups, appetizers and main.
after 20 min half of the appetizers arrived with no plates so all six of us somehow needed to grab from the same plate.
we asked for napkins and they were out of it...what? then came the soups. then we reminded about the rest of the appetizers. then we had to beg the waitress to bring our drinks...and this is a birthday party.
around 9:45 we got our food (they close at 10 on sunday) and all the dirty plates still were on the table. well...there still was my wife's order missing and had to remind them again, but when finally they brought, i was already ashamed to ask where was her green tea ordered very first.
i asked to take away all the dirty plates and the waiter started the removal from the plates full of food instead of the empty soup bowls.
thanks god at the end the manager approached us (by our request) and removed $35 from our bill for the 2 appetizers ...we did not get.
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

new owners bad food. the history of the restaurant wasgreatfood andgreatview. we have been going there for over 20 years on and off usually for a special occasion.the new owners or management still has agreatview but the quality of the food is poor at best. we tried the prime rib(overcooked and dry with little flavor), filet (over tenderized and tasted like mush), overall poor food quality. the server didn't know how to open a bottle of wine correctly that i brought with me and ended up pushing the cork and its pieces into the bottle of wine which resulted in pieces of cork in my good bottle of wine.

great place with a view!. i came here with my mentor for dinner. i had agreattime. the view was phenomenal in the evening. the pesto spread came with the bread was salty and tasty. i had the grilled mahi mahi and my mentor had the chilean sea bass. portions were good - not too large, but not small either. we were both pretty stuffed. the banana bread pudding to share was a nice sweet ending to the meal. the service was perfect as we chatting away the evening over the meal. then we got to walk out on the terrace to enjoy the nigh lights. i would come here again with my husband to enjoy!

castaway is a beautiful resturant overlooking the san fernando valley. if you are looking for a romantic place to take your loved one this is the perfect spot. the calamari isgreatam not too chewy and the prime rib was delightful. the portion sizes are great. the food items are a little expensive but the amount of food received for the price is well worth it. castaway gets a 7 out of 10. the only reason it didn't get a higher score is simply because they do not not cater to vegans. will definately visit again!!!

beautiful restaurant, terrible service. we went to castaway to celebrate my fiance's birthday last week. we were very excited and heard manygreatthings about the place. the location was beautiful and the menu looked great. then we met our server, norm. he was very scattered and never seemed to be listening to us when he came to the table. my mother-in-law joked that he seemed to by 'partying' in the back room each time he left the dining room. he made a mistake on my drink order, my dinner order, our appetizer order and continually tried to add on to the bill. he actually argued each time we declined one of his suggestions. he spilled water on the table twice and a martini once. he also mixed up our dinners and blamed each of his mistakes on the bartender or the chef, despite the fact that he didn't right down any of our orders or even appear to be paying attention when we ordered specifics like how we wanted our martinis or how we wanted our meat prepared. 3 of our 4 dinners were way overcooked, but he never returned to ask how we were doing. we just ate what we were given since we'd already sent back drinks that he didn't order correctly. he was so unprofessional that we began openly laughing at him during his interaction with our table as well as others nearby. the comedy routine would have been amusing if that's what we were looking forward to that evening. it wasn't. i consider myself a very easy going customer and don't regularly complain, but i was simply stunned by how unprofessional this 'server' was.

great service,greatfood.. i went for my one year anniversary. my husband and i enjoyed it very much. our server was prompt and even made some conversation with us. the view was breathtaking. i guess it depends on what you order, but the food we had was delicious. the calamari was crisp and was not chewy. i highly recommend it. my husband ordered the prime rib, and i ordered the new york strip. they were both cooked well...it melted in our mouths. on top of that, the server gave us a complimentary strawberry cheesecake to celebrate our anniversary. overall, a wonderful experience. we plan on going back every year.

not worth it!. the lunch buffet has many options but not manygreatones. the roast beef is ok and the cold salmon is edible, the rest of the choices are cheap, and unsavory. the dessert options are decent with black forest and cheesecake.
