my oh maya!. absolutely fell in love with this place! so far in the last month, i've visited twice.. yep, that good!
on my first visit i was driving back from jacksonville and decided to spend the afternoon in historic st.augustine. on a whim we walked into casa maya, a small place, with a lot of character. we ended up finding a tiny table by the entrance and although the room was tight it was well worth it! i had the queso fundido w. spinach & mushroom & the veggie wrap served w/ a side of chips! very fresh and flavorful, highly affordable!
a few weeks later i was raving on and on about it & took a drive with a friend, we arrived a tad too late for the lunch and was told they reopened at 5:30pm for dinner, why the hell not, right? (mind you, i hadn't had a single bite to eat!)
when 5:30 finally rolled around, i ran.. not walked to the restaurant, i got to admit, the service was not up to par as it was last time. we waited sometime to get a menu, our order was taken, but not promptly delivered. sadly my wrap wasn't there so i ordered the mayan soup & the veggie empanada for appetizers. the soup was the first to come out, as the restaurant slowly got packed.. about 20mins later our server walked by and apologized for the wait and explained the veggie empanadas were made from scratch and took longer to prepare, a little warning would've been nice! i felt bad, because i had raved about the place, and our service was so slow.. the soup was amazing! the empanadas.. eh.. hardly any veggies in it as much as cheese and the dough was not your traditional spanish dough but more of a flaky/dessert dough.
my friend had the fish for her entree and as for me, i had the veggie burrito. her fish was a tad salty, but all and all very flavorful & mine veggie was so tasty there was hardly a memory of that thing on my plate! i will definately be back, although i won't arrive starving as i did!
