our next stop was cafe du monde. everyone and their mother recommended we go there for one of their famous beignets. cafe dumondeonly really serves two things: the beignets and coffee. i, unfortunately, am not a coffee drinker so i didn’t get to experience their famous coffe au lait (coffee mixed with half hot milk) but i did dig into a beignet and chased it down with a cold chocolate milk. it was good but not earth-shattering good. maybe my expectations were too high? honestly, i think i had better beignets in savannah ! don’t get me wrong. i enjoyed them but next time i won’t wait on the excessively long line for some simple fried dough with powdered sugar. it reminded me of  voodoo donut in portland . good, not great, but the reputation has grown so much it’s a must try for yourself when you visit. cochon we met local friends from baton rouge  at this lovely restaurant who highly recommended it. thankfully we had reservation as it was packed to the rim! the atmosphere was casual and fun but a little loud. i loved the small plate options on the menu and we decided to order a bunch to share. i didn’t take many photos. i was enjoying the company and conversation too much but i did pause when my entree came out. that’s rabbit and dumplings and it was amazing! i’m normally not a dumpling girl but i made an exception as this was a menu item i’ve never seen before. the whole meal was fabulous and our waiter was super nice even though he seemed stretched too thin at this busy dinner spot. apolline based on yet another recommendation (thank you brandi !) we had to go to apolline for brunch. it  was a cute little place in uptown new orleans. small but cozy. a little loud but that may have only been because we were seated next to the most annoying group on the planet. before i even get into my entrée i have two words for you: cinnamon bacon.

so very good. why even write a review? cafe dumondeis always good. the sheer cheapness makes this a great breakfast spot for college kids like myself. if you're in new orleans, there's no reason you shouldn't stop by.

touristy but worth a stop. cafe dumondeis a complete tourist hang-out--- but that said, their coffee is amazing and their beignets are worth stopping in for. in case you aren't sure what to expect from beignets- think a fancier version of a funnel cake - deep fried dough covered in powered sugar.

0 by marc smith on 12 may, 2015 where to eat/drink share this post i’ve just arrived in new orleans , checked into my hotel room and dropped off my luggage. what do you think the first thing i want to do in new orleans is? you guessed right if you said i wanted to eat some beignets . not just any beignets though, i want some the famous beignets served at cafe dumonde. i want to gorge myself on a square french donut covered in white powdered sugar while drinking a cafe au lait. it is quintessential new orleans and a quintessential french quarter experience not to be missed. cafe dumondefrench market coffee stand cafe dumondeis located at  800 decatur street , which is a short ten-minute walk from my hotel on canal street, the sheraton new orleans . the walk to cafe dumondegets me in the big easy spirit. i see the iconic french quarter architecture and a few revelers walking the street with a drink in hand, myself included.

the one place you have to visit in new orleans is cafe du monde. i don't really know why, but it's the most famous spot in the city, and i don't think my trip would have been complete without it. the original cafe dumondecoffee stand was established in 1862 in the new orleans french market. the cafe is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. it closes only on christmas day and on the day an occasional hurricane passes too close to new orleans.

the five of us visited café dumondeon a sunday morning around 9am. at the time, the line was not too long, but by the time we left by 10, the line was more than double. the line did more well. during the wait, we listened to the street musicians. once we were seated, the waitress came by and took our order. this morning’s breakfast consisted of beignets & cafe au lait. the food and service were great. the only negative is that the seating area was tight. all and all, as a tourist, this place is a place you must visit.

cafe dumondewas on the top of my list to get beignets from on my trip to new orleans earlier this year.
while i didn’t personally visit the cafe, i was lucky enough to be woken by my friends at 1:30am one morning with a delivery of 3 beignets and a hot chocolate (the perks of it being open 24/7).
i was excited to say the least. the beignets were warm, soft and fluffy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside, and the hot chocolate was very chocolatey and sweet. both delicious!!
highly recommend visiting if you are in new orleans.

cafe dumondeis by far the best. a beignet (to me) is kind of like a donut crossed with a croissant. it’s deep fried choux pastry smothered in powdered sugar. they are delicious and fluffy but doughy and amazingly sweet.

pro tip: it’s worth the wait in line, go round the back for the take-away line if you can’t wait for a table.

as always cafe dumondeis a highlight of a french quarter visit. although, the customer service is getting worse as nearly all the waiters and waitresses were playing on their phones. we still got out beignets in a timely fashion. also, there are two crushed penny machines.

cafe dumondeis what it advertises. a coffee stand. but the coffee is good and the beignets are fresh. don't expect fast service and it's just friendly enough that you wouldn't consider it obnoxious. but as a tourist it's worth dropping in once for the experience.

cafe dumondeis a must stop for every visit. do yourself a favor and eat them there though. it's fast service so it won't slow you down. beignets have to be eaten while they're still hot. once they start cooling down, they lose their texture.

i've always dreamed about having beignets under the new orleans sun while listening to the boys play jazz on the square. well, it didn't go exactly like that when i was in nola but i did have some awesome beignets. and the best place to get them is at cafe dumonde- nowhere else. i know that this place does seem a bit hyped up with all the tourists and granted that it is not the friendliest cafe in the world. but this place is about efficiency. you can order your nice sweet frozen latte with hot beignets in a little under 5 minutes. that's service for you!
