our next stop was cafe du monde. everyone and their mother recommended we go there for one of their famous beignets. cafe du monde only really serves two things: the beignets and coffee. i, unfortunately, am not a coffee drinker so i didn’t get to experience their famous coffe au lait (coffee mixed with half hot milk) but i did dig into a beignet and chased it down with a cold chocolate milk. it was good but not earth-shattering good. maybe my expectations were too high? honestly, i think i had better beignets in savannah ! don’t get me wrong. i enjoyed them but next time i won’t wait on the excessively long line for some simple fried dough with powdered sugar. it reminded me of  voodoo donut in portland . good, not great, but the reputation has grown so much it’s a must try for yourself when you visit. cochon we met local friends from baton rouge  at this lovely restaurant who highly recommended it. thankfully we had reservation as it was packed to the rim! the atmosphere was casual and fun but a little loud. i loved the small plate options on the menu and we decided to order a bunch to share. i didn’t take many photos. i was enjoying the company and conversation too much but i did pause when my entree came out. that’s rabbit and dumplings and it was amazing! i’m normally not a dumpling girl but i made an exception as this was a menu item i’ve never seen before. the whole meal was fabulous and our waiter was super nice even though he seemed stretched too thin at this busy dinner spot. apolline based on yet another recommendation (thank you brandi !) we had to go to apolline for brunch. it  was a cute little place in uptown new orleans. small but cozy. a little loud but that may have only been because we were seated next to the most annoying group on the planet. before i even get into my entrée i have two words for you: cinnamon bacon.

touristy but worth a stop. cafe du monde is a complete tourist hang-out--- but that said, their coffee is amazing and theirbeignetsare worth stopping in for. in case you aren't sure what to expect from beignets- think a fancier version of a funnel cake - deep fried dough covered in powered sugar.

0 by marc smith on 12 may, 2015 where to eat/drink share this post i’ve just arrived in new orleans , checked into my hotel room and dropped off my luggage. what do you think the first thing i want to do in new orleans is? you guessed right if you said i wanted to eat somebeignets. not just anybeignetsthough, i want some the famousbeignetsserved at cafe du monde . i want to gorge myself on a square french donut covered in white powdered sugar while drinking a cafe au lait. it is quintessential new orleans and a quintessential french quarter experience not to be missed. cafe du monde french market coffee stand cafe du monde is located at  800 decatur street , which is a short ten-minute walk from my hotel on canal street, the sheraton new orleans . the walk to cafe du monde gets me in the big easy spirit. i see the iconic french quarter architecture and a few revelers walking the street with a drink in hand, myself included.

a "must stop" while in nola. we couldn't wait to try thebeignetsat cafe du monde. it was worth the wait! it isn't the cleanest but you'll forget about that when your order arrives! the cafe au lait (iced or hot) is the best i've had and thebeignetsare soft, fluffy, and absolutely delicious. the birds love the scour the floor for any pieces that have been dropped! there was quite a line but it did move fast and it was fun to listen to the music while we waited. don't forget cash, the atm across the street has a $4 fee. will definitely go back next time we are in town!

the iconic cafe du monde, i have seen in on a few movies and shows, mainly “chef” and “keeping up with the kardashians”, i was overly keen to try. now there is a few in new orleans around 6!! but the original is this one, french market.

now we went a few times on our stay in new orleans, but the morning is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!beignetsare fresher and completely different taste. this isn’t somehing they tell you! we did have a few for dessert but then we went for brekkie one morning and were blown away! bigger lines but worth the difference.

you haven’t tasted new orleans unless you’ve had cafe du monde. the original beignet goes great with their chicory coffee.beignetsare always best eaten hot, which is unfortunate, because i would love to bring a couple dozen back to birmingham with me each time i visit nola.

the five of us visited café du monde on a sunday morning around 9am. at the time, the line was not too long, but by the time we left by 10, the line was more than double. the line did more well. during the wait, we listened to the street musicians. once we were seated, the waitress came by and took our order. this morning’s breakfast consisted ofbeignets& cafe au lait. the food and service were great. the only negative is that the seating area was tight. all and all, as a tourist, this place is a place you must visit.

cafe du monde was on the top of my list to getbeignetsfrom on my trip to new orleans earlier this year.
while i didn’t personally visit the cafe, i was lucky enough to be woken by my friends at 1:30am one morning with a delivery of 3beignetsand a hot chocolate (the perks of it being open 24/7).
i was excited to say the least. thebeignetswere warm, soft and fluffy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside, and the hot chocolate was very chocolatey and sweet. both delicious!!
highly recommend visiting if you are in new orleans.

have to give it to them, they have been good for a real long time. locals likely dont go and tourists should. killer heat in the summer to wait in but if you get up early the coffee andbeignetsare worth it. extra powdered sugar.
