our next stop was cafe du monde. everyone and their mother recommended we go there for one of their famous beignets. cafe du monde only really serves two things: the beignets and coffee. i, unfortunately, am not acoffeedrinker so i didn’t get to experience their famous coffe au lait (coffee mixed with half hot milk) but i did dig into a beignet and chased it down with a cold chocolate milk. it was good but not earth-shattering good. maybe my expectations were too high? honestly, i think i had better beignets in savannah ! don’t get me wrong. i enjoyed them but next time i won’t wait on the excessively long line for some simple fried dough with powdered sugar. it reminded me of  voodoo donut in portland . good, not great, but the reputation has grown so much it’s a must try for yourself when you visit. cochon we met local friends from baton rouge  at this lovely restaurant who highly recommended it. thankfully we had reservation as it was packed to the rim! the atmosphere was casual and fun but a little loud. i loved the small plate options on the menu and we decided to order a bunch to share. i didn’t take many photos. i was enjoying the company and conversation too much but i did pause when my entree came out. that’s rabbit and dumplings and it was amazing! i’m normally not a dumpling girl but i made an exception as this was a menu item i’ve never seen before. the whole meal was fabulous and our waiter was super nice even though he seemed stretched too thin at this busy dinner spot. apolline based on yet another recommendation (thank you brandi !) we had to go to apolline for brunch. it  was a cute little place in uptown new orleans. small but cozy. a little loud but that may have only been because we were seated next to the most annoying group on the planet. before i even get into my entrée i have two words for you: cinnamon bacon.

touristy but worth a stop. cafe du monde is a complete tourist hang-out--- but that said, theircoffeeis amazing and their beignets are worth stopping in for. in case you aren't sure what to expect from beignets- think a fancier version of a funnel cake - deep fried dough covered in powered sugar.

0 by marc smith on 12 may, 2015 where to eat/drink share this post i’ve just arrived in new orleans , checked into my hotel room and dropped off my luggage. what do you think the first thing i want to do in new orleans is? you guessed right if you said i wanted to eat some beignets . not just any beignets though, i want some the famous beignets served at cafe du monde . i want to gorge myself on a square french donut covered in white powdered sugar while drinking a cafe au lait. it is quintessential new orleans and a quintessential french quarter experience not to be missed. cafe du monde french marketcoffeestand cafe du monde is located at  800 decatur street , which is a short ten-minute walk from my hotel on canal street, the sheraton new orleans . the walk to cafe du monde gets me in the big easy spirit. i see the iconic french quarter architecture and a few revelers walking the street with a drink in hand, myself included.

the one place you have to visit in new orleans is cafe du monde. i don't really know why, but it's the most famous spot in the city, and i don't think my trip would have been complete without it. the original cafe du mondecoffeestand was established in 1862 in the new orleans french market. the cafe is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. it closes only on christmas day and on the day an occasional hurricane passes too close to new orleans.

have to give it to them, they have been good for a real long time. locals likely dont go and tourists should. killer heat in the summer to wait in but if you get up early thecoffeeand beignets are worth it. extra powdered sugar.

thirty years after our first visit three impressions:

1) the beignets, coffee, and hot chocolate are as good as always;
2) same location next to jackson square; and
3) no where near as cozy as it once was...

to be fair this was sunday, new year’s eve, the day before the sugar bowl (clemson vs. alabama), 300 anniversary of the founding of the city. the french quarter was packed! the line for a table went all the way to the jackson brewery.

to take care of the traffic they need to move efficiently... fans from both schools were showing their colors.

in 1988 i remember large kettles where the beignets would fry right in front of you...

today they are an assembly line, a well oiled machine that the industrial engineer in me marveled at.

it’s a strictly cash business... after all the jokes aside the fact is the wait staff pickup the beignets in the kitchen and join the hot drink assembly line where they fulfill the rest of the order and then pay cash before setting back out to the tables... everything moves so fast that they haven’t the time to take credit cards...

again the beignets are that amazing hot fried dough conduit for powdered sugar... oh so good. perfect for a cold day when paired with a hotcoffeeor chocolate.

remember the menu is spartan - a tour de force in focus and efficiency!

a new orleans tradition. when i mentioned that we were going for holiday in the big easy everyone said check out the beignets at café du monde. so we made it a point to visit on or first morning.
very friendly service staff, always a street musician playing on the sidewalk.
beignets were hit and drenched in sugar.coffeehot and strong. great start to a day of walking around the crescent city.

the beignet andcoffeeare good. make sure to bring a bib as the sugar will be on the front of your shirt. we went about 9 am and did not have to wait but noticed after that time there are lines beyond the street. enjoy!
