the one place you have to visit in new orleans is cafe du monde. i don't really know why, but it's the most famous spot in the city, and i don't think my trip would have been complete without it. the original cafe du monde coffee stand was established in 1862 in the new orleans french market. the cafe is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. it closes only on christmas day and on the day an occasional hurricane passes too close to new orleans.

you haven’t tasted new orleans unless you’ve had cafe du monde. the original beignet goes great with their chicory coffee. beignets are always best eaten hot, which is unfortunate, because i would love to bring a couple dozen back to birmingham with me each time i visit nola.

the five of us visited café du monde on a sunday morning around 9am. at the time, the line was not too long, but by the time we left by 10, the line was more than double. the line did more well. during the wait, we listened to the street musicians. once we were seated, the waitress came by and took our order. this morning’s breakfast consisted of beignets & cafe au lait. the food and service were great. the only negative is that the seating area was tight. all and all, as a tourist, this place is a place you must visit.

cafe du monde was on the top of my list to get beignets from on my trip to new orleans earlier this year.
while i didn’t personally visit the cafe, i was lucky enough to be woken by my friends at 1:30am one morning with a delivery of 3 beignets and a hot chocolate (the perks of it being open 24/7).
i was excited to say the least. the beignets were warm, soft and fluffy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside, and the hot chocolate was very chocolatey and sweet. both delicious!!
highly recommend visiting if you are in new orleans.

have to give it to them, they have been good for a real long time. locals likely dont go and tourists should. killer heat in the summer to wait in but if you get up early the coffee and beignets are worth it. extra powdered sugar.

thirty years after our first visit three impressions:

1) the beignets, coffee, and hot chocolate are as good as always;
2) same location next to jackson square; and
3) no where near as cozy as it once was...

to be fair this was sunday, new year’s eve, the day before the sugar bowl (clemson vs. alabama), 300 anniversary of the founding of the city. the french quarter was packed! the line for a table went all the way to the jackson brewery.

to take care of the traffic they need to move efficiently... fans from both schools were showing their colors.

in 1988 i remember large kettles where the beignets would fry right in front of you...

today they are an assembly line, a well oiled machine that the industrial engineer in me marveled at.

it’s a strictly cash business... after all the jokes aside the fact is the wait staff pickup the beignets in the kitchen and join the hot drink assembly line where they fulfill the rest of the order and then pay cash before setting back out to the tables... everything moves so fast that they haven’t the time to take credit cards...

again the beignets are that amazing hot fried dough conduit for powdered sugar... oh so good. perfect for a cold day when paired with a hot coffee or chocolate.

remember the menu is spartan - a tour de force in focus and efficiency!

a new orleans tradition. when i mentioned that we were going for holiday in the big easy everyone said check out the beignets at café du monde. so we made it a point to visit on or first morning.
very friendly service staff, always a street musician playing on the sidewalk.
beignets were hit and drenched in sugar. coffee hot and strong. great start to a day of walking around the crescent city.

great beignets, warm with lots of icing and lovely hot chocolate. go early, we got a table straight away at 9.00am. half an hour later there was a big queue.

cafe du monde is by far the best. a beignet (to me) is kind of like a donut crossed with a croissant. it’s deep fried choux pastry smothered in powdered sugar. they are delicious and fluffy but doughy and amazingly sweet.

pro tip: it’s worth the wait in line, go round the back for the take-away line if you can’t wait for a table.

very fast service, awesome beignets! don't expect to get any drink refills though, once we paid it seemed that we were just taking up space.

lineup was ridiculous and i'm not certain what for, decided to shorten our wait by hitting the take out window. beignets are overrated - taste like they've been fried in old oil.
cafe au lait was also mediocre.

the beignet and coffee are good. make sure to bring a bib as the sugar will be on the front of your shirt. we went about 9 am and did not have to wait but noticed after that time there are lines beyond the street. enjoy!
