bruny island
our first destination was the brunyislandcheese co. & beer co.
the restaurant was really cosy, we took a table outside to enjoy good sunny weather while enjoying fantastic warm weather.

we ordered “brunyislandcheese platter” for 30.00 aud.
we chose the following cheese options:
- raw milk c2 *hard, natural rind, raw milk* ( it is the sort of cheese found throughout the mountain of france and northern italy. a classic cooked curd cheese made in the traditional large wheels. c2 matures for 6-12 months, during this time it develops a sweet aroma & mildly nutty flavour. the rind is wiped every week to encourage the surface bacteria that provide this cheese much of its robust integrity )
- george *hard, natural rind* ( it is a semi hard cheese aged for 6-8 months. savoury with a creamy mouth feel and flavour reminiscence of cheddar )
- o.d.o *fresh and marinated in olive oil*( it stands for one day old and that’s what it is. a simple fresh cheese that relies inherently on the quality of milk to deliver its flavour. it has a relatively low salt content and a strong lactic acid flavour. odo is marinated in olive oil with fresh garlic and herbs )
our favourite respectively was c2, george and o.d.o.
this cheese platter was good value for the good quality of cheese.
the platter was also accompanied by the fresh baguette.
note: you need to ask for more baguette *free* if you’re running out of the baguette while having with cheese.

we also ordered the cappuccino for $4.50. the coffee was too pricey and it wasn’t really good.
the taste wasn’t balance. not recommended to order the coffee when you come to this place.

overall, we had great time of the cheese platter and not the coffee.

brunyislandcheese co. is in a beautiful little spot and the fire pits outside are a warm welcoming. unfortunately no one really paid attention to our arrival and we were left to fend for ourselves whilst trying to navigate our way through the produce and ordering process, even though we were the only ones at the counter.

this was made up for by the delicious food they served up. i forget the name of the dish but we ordered the cheese wrapped in prosciutto. it was money well spent and the highlight of bruny island. the dish is a perfect serving for two and the condiments were a perfect compliment to the dish.

definitely recommend.

came to brunyislandto look around and this place was on the main road after we got off the ferry. they had a really nice rustic surrounding, perfect for relaxing brunch. we ordered ploughman's lunch platter for $25. the portions were very small, but the smoked salmon was just so mmmm, their cheese were really nice and their home made sourdough rye bread was really nice as well. it would have been really good if the price was $18 mark😁

as part of the brunyislandgourmet food experience, we visited the brunyislandcheese company and were treated with a sample tasting of some of their best cheeses.

the actual store isn’t hard to find, but the entrance is located at the end of the car park down this walkway.

the staff were friendly and very generous with the cheese tastings. there was also a bowl of sourdough to enjoy with the cheese.

check out the review of brunyislandcheese co. in the blog post below.

brunyislandcheese co. is the answer for sunday post-stroll munchies, the surplus of strolling spots and cheese + wine options? the mind truly boggles.

we were treated to a hilarious cheese tasting, with an entire palette/palate of choices of locally made cheeses, then opted to try a smorgasbord of delicious cheeses, home smoked salmon, jams, and a crazy mouthwatering prosciutto-wrapped baked cheese.

will definitely be back when i relocate to bruny for good! :')

i loved the outdoor sitting; the platforms and bean bag chairs amongst the bushes. when the bread came out hot and fresh from the outdoor oven, i was right up there being a paparazzi taking gorgeous bread shots. couldn't resist. ;)

brunyislandcheese co. is featured in a picture blog post of traveling and eating gluten-free food in hobart and surrounds. see full blog post entitled taste of tasmania on webpage.....>>>>

brunyislandis anislandoff the south-east side of tasmania, a bit further down below hobart. it is home to some of the most incredible scenery and food australia has to offer. i’ve been lucky enough to spend a year living not far from the bruny ferry, letting me pop over there whenever i want, and it has become one of my favourite places in tasmania. brunyislandcheese company is a quite famous cheese maker based on bruny, known mostly for their heavy part in the gourmet farmer tv show by matthew evans . they make some truly spectacular cheeses that are shipped out to restaurants all over australia or to customers via their website, and if you’re lucky enough to be able to visit them in their remote little cheesery, they also do the best toasted cheese sandwich i’ve had in my life (as well as pizzas and other things). view larger map

brunyislandwas on the itinerary that day. yes, we only had 2 full days in hobart, yet we decided we want to take a roadtrip somewhere. we didn’t do much research prior to the trip, we pretty much decided on burnyislanda week prior and made sure we booked our car from a car hire company (thrifty) which allowed us to drive to bruny. magic mushie – trio of mushrooms, fetta, salsa verde, & rocket on garlic sour dough with extra poached egg and bacon the old new egg dish – eggs scrambled with fetta on garlic sourdough with beetroot relish and wild rocket with crispy pancetta i really loved the beetroot in this dish as it helps get you through such a heavy dish of scrambled eggs and bacon. i have yet to attempt brunch at home inspired by this very dish. the houses in hobart (especially battery point) are so cute, even with that rustic look. i hope to do a bit

our last stop on our day-trip to brunyislandis of course the famous-for-a-reason brunyislandcheese company. whether you know them due to their part in matthew evans’ gourmet farmer (where i first heard about them), from their mega popular cheese club , or just from coming across one of their ridiculously delicious cheeses, they’re an absolute must-see when visiting the island. from their retail store in the front of their building you can watch them actually make the cheeses through the glass walls, or peek into the aging room, while you wait for your food and go through a tasting of their offerings. they do great coffee and a decent range of foods too, including wood fired pizzas, toasties on sourdough, or the inevitable tasting platters, all made/baked/cooked right there. i didn’t get the best photos to sum it all up this trip, as we were preoccupied eating and chatting, so i’ll visit again for more photos soon and update this post. in the meantime, here’s the ones i managed to r

as promised , here is brunyisland2.0 – the food edition: a foodies’ tour of bruny island.  i’ll pop a few landscape shots in here too – just to remind you where we are eating. brunyislandis best known for oysters and cheese.  need i say more?  if we are friends, than nope, probably not. today we’ll be going to: get shucked hotel bruny , and brunyislandcheese company . oyster crates at get shucked, brunyislandthis is me, happy as a pig in mud who is scoffing oysters, at get shucked  on bruny island.  these oysters are among the most delicious i have ever eaten.  i was happily ready to tell you at the time that brunyislandoysters were the best in australia (if not the world), but to be honest, i’ve since eaten amazing rival oysters in st helens in tasmania and in coffin bay and cowell in south australia.  the point is – i couldn’t pick a favourite tasting oyster out of the lot of them.  australian waters just breed the most delicious oysters.  especially when you have the joy o

brunyislandcheese company is an artisan cheese produce on south bruny island.  all cheeses a produced and matured using traditional techniques and local milk. cheese makes me happy! the cheese company produces cheese from cows milk, goats milk and a special, raw milk cheese.  the three main styles of cheese made at brunyislandcheese are the tom, washed rind cheeses and the c2 raw milk cheese.  i had the opportunity to walk through the factory as the cheese was being turned.  turning the cheese allows the whey to drain and the cheese to compress. oh how i love cheese!! i couldn’t help taking a quick snap of the “cheese makes me happy shirts”. cheese factory maturage next we went through to where the cheese is left to mature. the aroma was amazing! there is something just beautiful about seeing all that lovely cheese lined up on the shelves. sampling the cheese from the wheels walking through the various maturation rooms i was given samples of the cheeses at va

if you hot foot it out of hobart and drive south, you will hit a lovely little town called kettering where you can get on a barge over the bruny island. once you arrive you can spend the day driving around the island, along its famous “neck” and enjoy nature, but most importantly its gourmet food and wine offering. no brunyislandtrip is complete without a visit to get shucked oyster farm and the brunyislandcheese company, the only place in australia where you can buy unpasteurised cheese!
