blue star diner

i liked it but was expensive -- $25 for bacon and eggs and coffee (plus tip). like the service, like the vibe but it's a splurge... looking at $50 for brunch for two. the same thing costs $12 at deerhead cafe. just saying.

tacos & tequila. i've been to blue star in the past, and always really enjoyed their burgers. this time, i decided to branch out and try their delicious tequila cocktails and tacos. there was quite the wait, but it was absolutely worth it.

blue star gets 4 stars. been a few times now and always been very good

do not order the hash if you want to enjoy the rest of your day. all the other items are good.

alright - so i am slightly unsure what to say about bsd. went today got the first time. had heard nothing but rave reviews from friends, etc. there was a lineup (to be expected) but i was pleasantly surprised when the host offered us a drink while we waited. he even came by to fill up my coffee outside, which was exceptional.

i am somewhat of an eggs benny addict, so my boyfriend and i each got a benny and shared. i had the pulled pork; he had the burger benny.

i also had the gluten free english muffin, which was delicious. i really liked the gf options on the menu.

alright, so about the bennies. i wanted to like this place; i really did. unfortunately i found the food mediocre. the pulled pork didn't have enough sauce, so it was a little bland. neither benny had enough hollandaise sauce (both has just a tiny bit) so i asked for more - and was charged $2 for a very small ramekin of hollandaise. ok.

the burger benny was better, the party was very good, but all in all it wasn't spectacular. the service was great, the place is cute - but given the food, i'm really in no hurry to go back.

totally sidebar but the whole time we were there they were playing really bad 90s r&b. seemed like a very odd musical choice. even heard the couple at the table beside us remark on how bad it was. no diggity, no doubt!

our bill (for the 2 of us, 2 eggs benny + 1 coffee + 1 oj) was $43. over $50 with the tip. all in all, too expensive and not worth it, in my opinion.

blaming the hangover.... terrible, flat pancakes. i thought that because i was a little fuzzy that morning i had accidentally ordered a gf dish ...according to the menu they aren't even a gf option so it wasn't even a mix up. they taste that awful. the service was borderline rude. but because of the overall good reviews if someone else suggested it then i would give it another chance....

nothing worth coming back for. with all the breakfast diners already existing and coming out in calgary, this one doesn't stand out in any way in the least. i've been there a few times and none of the dishes were anything close to exceptional minus one which was a limited time sort of deal. food is overpriced for what you get. most of the staff aren't too friendly. today is probably the last time i will be back there. the server i paid and tipped was supposed to come back with the change i requested, but she did not. it was not busy at the time and you could tell she was stealing glances my way but pretending she didn't notice i was sitting there waiting on her. finally after five minutes, she came back and hastily apologized, saying she forgot my change. her tone and body language was insincere and unconvincing. so many better diners out there, the food, service, and price is simply not worth it. sadly over-hyped because of the "hipster trend."

breakie worth the wait!. excellent! worth coming again!
strengths
* reservations and text - long line up. diner texts you - come within 5 minutes. went for a lovely walk. seated immediately after text.
* menu - delicious! huevos rancheros, stuffed french toast - cinnamon cream cheese & field berry compote, all in omelette. mmm! fratello coffee.
* personal preference - red potato hash browns. tasty for others. did not care for them.
* service - prompt. friendly. minor changes no problem. refills frequent.

impressive. i went to blue star diner today (sunday) at 7 p.m. and there was no wait. a few tables were already full when we arrived, but most were empty. our party of four was seated and served very quickly. one of my companions got the dairy lane burger with fries, which she loved. my other friend also got the burger, but with yam fries. he seemed to enjoy it. my mother got some kind of chicken tacos which were tasty, albeit slightly soggy. i also got tacos, but i opted for the veggie ones. they were filled with salsa and fried avocado. they were delicious, but the shells were indeed soggy. the servers were friendly and made sure we were enjoying our food. overall, it was great. i think it surpassed all of our expectations. i will definitely be back.

it was packed for brunch and i could definitely see why - the servings were good for their prices and the food was freshly-prepared. the staff were friendly despite the bustle and the service was fast and efficient to keep customers seated as soon as possible. the diner itself had tasteful decor that didn't make a small place like this seem cramped and had a charming atmosphere.

meh. not worth it.. $17 is a bit hefty for a bland bison burger.

the atmosphere wasn't great with the loud music. i couldn't hear what my friends were saying.

i won't be returning to this restaurant.

consistently on of my top spots. consistently one of my favorite places to eat, no matter what the meal. the food is always delicious, served quickly, and very fresh. have tried other places for brunch, at similar prices, but i always end up wishing i had gone to blue star. most recently i had dinner there and was definitely not disappointed. my mediterranean veggie burger was delish and my dining companions were very happy with their picks as well. keep up the good work blue star!

$11.00 for "dark storm" drink was costly considering it tasted "weak". pork taco was good but not great, meat seemed a bit dry, looked nice anyways. chicken sandwich was good also. service was really good. chocolate desert was quite good. we'd go back again.

good food, poor service. this place has great food, but the portions can be small (except for the burgers which are gigantic). i've found the past couple times i've been in for dinner however that the service has been lack luster. the owner is very friendly but the past two servers i've had were not very friendly or attentive. not sure i'll be back any time soon.
