absolutely stunning location - well, out the front anyway. the view from the back is a bit desolate, but seriously, the look across the port river with the tall ships at the dock and the lighthouse and the bridges is pretty special.

a friendly staff serve very big portions of good, honest pub food at fairly standard prices for this sort of thing. 

the food is flavourful and there are salads and vegetables that you can help yourself to.

you can tell they're doing something right because they seem to be pretty much packed out, so book before you go rather than just show up and demand the best table.

we'll go back and not just for that view.

this pub has a lovely deck, with a great view of the port river. the food is good, though it would be nice to see more vegetarian options. they have a mushroom & pumpkin risotto and a salad, but all of the other mains include meat. the staff are friendly, the service is quick and the prices are very decent. i'll be back.

had breakfast 2 weeks ago and the service was exceptional and the food fantastic, went again this sunday and the service was very hit and miss, waitress so busy chatting people were coming in and finding there own table, 10 min later being asked to move because table reserved, the food was below average and i am being kind with that statement because of the excellent food the week before, we will not go back for a wile if ever over our resent experience, good luck and hope you dine on the right day for good food.

pancakes from a packet?. i had heard so many great things about the birk that when it was suggested for breakfast i was looking forward to it. i can only comment on my choice, the other meals looked ok. when i received my pancakes i am pretty sure they were the ones from a packet you can buy from a supermarket. heated in the microwave (and still needed more time) and had some sloppy topping. very disappointing.

nice food at the port. have been there twice. tried the fish of the day and the chicken curry. the curry was too spicy for my wife, but i liked it a lot. the fish of the day was very good each time. the salad bar is also good. it's a nice place, especially if the weather is good and you seat outside, at nice place and with good quality food. will there again.

depressing. i'm baffled as to how this hotel could earn the mantle of best eatery in port adelaide. it is so busy that the staff have become complacent and uninspired. there is no personality (save for the owner who has enough charm to almost make up for them). i went on a night he obviously wasn't there and was greeted with the usual arrogance that is way too common in hospitality (wiping this bench comes before serving you). then "you right there?" i said "no" which did not amuse my server.

i ordered a wine and perched at the bar so i could observe the kitchen. i love that it is separated with glass to give customers an opportunity to watch their chips get fried. in all the kitchens i have worked in there has always been an energetic vibe shared by all involved with the preparation of a meal. not so in this kitchen. nobody said anything. faces looked glum. maybe it's the uninspired menu that depressed them?

if you are heading out and want a great view this is the place. however, if you are like me and you think you are more important than a wiper, and you enjoy connecting with enthused staff members who love what they do, don't expect to find it here.

my friend and i had dinner at the birkenhead tavern last night after going to another ban live export rally.
i just want to say the staff are good, the vegie/salad bar average, the chillie almost non existant in my meal, but i was most impressed by a man from the front bar who offered to open two doors for me as i was carrying two glasses of beer to the dining room! well done to that gentleman!

used to really like this place for its in expensive breakfast and atmosphere. had a terrible breakfast last time, came out over cooked and cold. must have had an in experienced cook on that morning. unfortunately i have not been back since.

6 of us went for a meal on a saturday night, the place was packed and the service and speed of meals was fantastic, all of our meals exceeded our expectations, absolutely beautiful food and great service, will definately be back again soon, highly recommended

good food, great service!. i have to admit i went with pretty low expectations, expecting 'just another pub meal'. i don't think i could have been more wrong. we did not have a booking and the front decking area was fully booked out. staff asked if we would like to have a counter meal in the front bar, or have a drink while we waited for a table. we opted to wait for a table, not that we had to wait long. as we were about to order staff showed us to our table. the service we received from all staff was amazing! the food came out quickly, perhaps a little too quickly (under 10minutes), that is my only criticism - but the meals were amazing. we enjoyed the beef cheek which was cooked to perfection, flavoured beautiful and presented well. my partner chose the crumbed pork cutlet, another beauty. all in all it was great service, great food... my only advice... book ahead!

went back for a second time and still didn't perform. i heard such good things about this place so i went to check it out.. and was not so impressed. food is well priced, menu sounds fantastic but it just doesnt deliver.

i decided to go back again to prove to myself that it was just bad luck the first time, so i booked in for a group of 18 for my birthday. once again, food is a good price for all those on a budget but it just isn't regular pub standard.. food isnt fresh and they seem to be aiming too high for their cooking ability.

the staff are all very nice, it has a great view and nice styling outside but the inside looks a little outdated and the salad bar is pretty terrible. i'd go back if i just wanted a quick, cheap, not great quality meal but there are much better places close by.

bad food, good service. i live in the port and have regularly frequented the birk (lets say once a month) and have never had a problem until now. whether it is a new chef or a new approach, the food is now terrible, my steak was half cooked, and my partners fish was tiny and was not worth the money we paid for it. the staff and good and handled the situation with professionalism, but why would i go back for a below average meal?? will be looking for a new local.

i took my family to the well known establishment and i've got to say the service was very good. the food was generous and value for money in my opinion. there was a minor issue with my uncles food but the management at the time took care of the issue straight away and offered to make a new meal and coffee dessert at no extra cost. we declined since we were already full from sharing the meals between us anyway. so management gave us a refund of the meal in question without even asking for it. top service, beautiful views and very well trained hospitable staff!
