wow

okay so i decided to give bgr a try, i had to, after all this talk about them having the best burger in jhb i really just had to understand the hype .

the first thing i noticed is that the waffle fries are gone which is sad, i would have loved to compare them to the crisscut fries at carls jnr but whatever. that's my first complaint alot of coming soon ot gone items on the menu.

another complaint is the milkshake, now i understand its being made by fresh yoghurt and its more than amazing but r50 for a small milkshake just doesn't make sense to me at all.

anyway on to the food. i decided to go for it all, the doublecheesewith everything. and fries .

r300 later for 2 people i'm worried because that's the equivalent to 2 x share boxes at mcdonalds. i mean that's a lot of burgers and fries.

so is it worth it?

well.....yes and no,

if you are putting this into the gourmet burger league then yes the price isn't bad at all for all the extras you can put on,  and what you actually get at the end, which is a delicious fresh burger. however it wasn't mind blowing, the hot sauce and mayo and whatever all seem a bit bland, the burger itself might be the best prepared burger ever but it again seemed a bit boring. maybe a little herbs and spices? or some sauces with a bite?

now the problem with this is that even without a tangy , spicy sauce, or a spiced up patty this burger sits in my top 5 without a chance of ever dropping because it is thee most soft and fresh burger i've ever had. the bun was fresher than andre 3000 after a shower. and the ingredients used seemed to have been harvested just for my burger. when you bite into this burger its like biting into a cloud of happiness. everything perfect.

the fries, oh my gawsh!!! its some of the best fries i've ever had. crispy outside, soft inside. salted to perfection and just awesome in all ways.

now yes its one of the best burgers in jhb but if you are like me that enjoys a habanero teriyaki sauce, or avo and feta with spicy salsa or something crazy that's going to make my tastebuds explode then  you might not find what you looking for at this place.

but if you are looking for the reincarnation of the original burger then this is it, it is simple it is everything a cheeseburger is supposed to be. its is tasty and fresh.

and it feels as if i'm a kid watching spongebob all those people going crazy for the krabby patty and always wanting to try the best burger. well bgr is as close to that as i have gotten.

all i want now is more options and then there will be no questions about its.

this cool, no-frills burger joint is located within a caltex petrol garage complex on jan smuts ave. it has an industrial inspired interior featuring cement screed floors, interesting pipe light fittings and striking red metal/ wooden chairs.

the menu is straightforward - choose your beef burger as a double / single (withcheeseor not) and add your toppings for free. they also serve a "cardio" version, which replaces the bun with lettuce.
you can add on a rather large serving of french fries for only r19.
also try their tasty frozen custard, in a shake or as a float!

the service is very friendly, fast and efficient. you can see that the place is well run, as hygiene standards are top notch and the space is spotless.

will definitely be back for a late night burger on cheat day!

everyone is always looking for 'the best burger in town'. bgr is a rad joint in a weird location (they are looking to open up 'the real deal') but so far so good. the lemonade is amazing. you choose between beef bgr orcheesebgr, and all the extras are for free (think lettuce, tomato, gherkins, onions, mushrooms...). so you can decide how hungry you really are. the fries are rad too. ask for their not-so-hot hot sauce, it's nice. their packaging is old school and their interior gives me a bit of a diner feel. #eatbgr

i had been meaning to try this burger joint as i heard many reviews about it. its a lovely spot if you looking to chill out and have a conversation with someone over a good takeaway meal.

the burger is great - for r65 you get acheeseburger with the works which is what i ordered. i didnt feel heavy or bloat after the burger which tells me alot about the meat meaning that its good quality. the fries are amazing. 10/10 they are the only ones ive found to rival mcdonalds. the portion of lemonade is very generous

the only thing is price - how everything has to be ordered seperately (ie burger doesnt come with fries) . its more than a regular take away joint but it would make sense if i paid r80 for the combination of the two

would definitely go back though ! great great burger

the lost city of bgr

although i’m no gastronomic connoisseur or a culinary zealot, i would like to consider myself some kind of vexed enthusiast with a literal taste for the simple, well-constructed, but brilliantly delicious fare across all boards. especially so with the street-sold or “fast food” variety. those much needed edible doses of unhealthy purchased goodness we desperately need to get us through this complex and convoluted foxhole we call daily life. in recent times, i specifically obsess over the classic favourite we know as the “burger”. provided it has been prepared or produced with some care and quality. i am happy to report that i have found the motherload within this arena on the northern side of egoli. it is colloquially known as bgr.

in the words of the prophet, anthony bourdain: “there are many forces at play with a properly made burger.” i’ve had the privilege of sampling this form of food in many different shapes and sizes, in many different places all over. i have had the holy grail of burgers at in-n-out in los angeles, and reasonably good burgers in jerusalem, lusaka, cape town, pretoria, and atlanta airport. though, the closest i have come to the el dorado or shangri-la, is hidden somewhere between jan smuts avenue and oxford road in rosebank. i would love to tell you exactly where it is, but i would probably have to kill you.

nestled next to a quiet one-way with very little parking available, bgr is a single store operation that packs the punch that ten franchises couldn’t muster. the clean, industrial, and immensely minimal aesthetic immediately divulges the true purpose of your visit. for, cartoonish or sleek furniture, colourful mascots and iconography, would be the most futile and cheapening endeavour in this house that ground beef built. by the way, “never frozen, [100% rump steak] patties are hand-formed daily with only a dash of salt added while its cooking.”

the menu is simple. burgers, fries, lemonade. maybe a cup of frozen custard afterwards. the absolute best part of all this is, the burger is a ballistic missile of pure delectable greatness. it sounds ridiculous, but it’s truly ingenious. the burgers are available as a single and double hamburger or cheeseburger. then, there’s the bacon burger, and a vegetarian option. toppings are straightforward, the usual stuff to build your own tasty creation with. but, all garnish are intensely fresh. simply ordering your burger with “the works” would move enough mountains in a single visit. the patty is flawlessly cooked with an immensely high quality ground meat. thecheeseis melted over the patty while on the griddle. the finely constructed burger is finally handed over, and can be accompanied by a portion of high-grade fries. i’m utterly starving now.

this subjective rant has made it clear that i will be visiting this fine establishment for many moons to come. it consistently provides the contentment seeked, and it effortlessly checks all the boxes. like i said: simple, well-constructed, but brilliantly delicious fare. go and have yours, before the mirage dissipates.

bgr the concept is simple and neat with two options beef or vegaterian patties. you have a choice of toppings and saucers to chooce from. they offer crispy american bacon and fries at an additional charge. they are made fresh to order which is awesome.
we tried the doublecheeseburger and bunless burger. the burgers weren't that big and slightly dry and lacked flavour and the bacon was very hard. chocolate milkshakes were good.
the atmosphere and decor is really awesome, clean and minimal. they have a range of seating areas to choose from. the burgers are very expensive for what you getting. 🍔🍔🍔🍔

bgr is a very simple american-styled burger joint in rosebank.

nestled between a snazzy sneaker shop and an artsy shop, the minimalistic interior makes it a very unassuming restaurant especially from the outside.

the service is good, efficient, and relatively quick. although being a fast food place, the order process is very simple: you order at the counter (like you normally would at a fast food place), collect your food, and either grab a table there or take it home to eat.

we ordered a cheeseburger and a double cheeseburger, and how it works is: you choose your burger type and then the toppings are free (except for bacon, bacon is an added cost) and you can choose which toppings you would like to add. the buns they use seem to be a fresh brioche-like buns that are wonderfully soft and buttery with a slight sweetness to them. the burger patties are smash burger patties but with a minimally seasoned meatiness to them. thecheeseis, well, thecheeseischeesethat's melted on your burger patty. we also ordered fries and a lemonade. the fries only come in one size and are a combination of mcdonald's fries and kfc fries on a good day. the lemonade was surprisingly refreshing with a tang to it which was rather enjoyable.

the minimally marked/unmarked packaging further adds to the simplicity of bgr.

overall, bgr is a simple burger joint that's worth a visit if you're wanting fresh, simple burgers, and to be in and out of there relatively quickly.

after reading the hype around bgr and it's "best burger in jozi" we had to make a mission to try it out. it most definitely did not disappoint. the restaurant it's self is unassuming, like any take away place it's about the food and the speed of delivery.

the burgers are what really set it apart though. the patties are juicy and soft (non of that rubbery crap) and the buns are light and fresh. you have the option of adding as many free toppings as you would like on top of your burger/cheese burger/doublecheeseburger). the chips are thin and salty. a burger with drinks and chips will set you back around r100, so it's not the cheapest "fast food" option out there but it is so worth it. definitely my new favorite burger and if you haven't tried it yet be sure to head there as soon as possible.

for me, the bgr concept works amazing as the burgers they serve is basic, yet delightfully tasty and well made.
went for the doublecheesewithout toppings to test how good these burgers really are, and i was not disappointed!
with a range of basic (yet sufficient) toppings to choose from, a burger that suits every need can be built to satisfy your tastebuds
fries are also on point.

safe to say this is one of the best burger joints that i've visited in gauteng when it comes to taste and quality.

will definitely make a trip to bgr again!!

the burgers are by far the best in joburg. you can actually taste the beef, and the pleasure of having the juicy goodness run down your chin is deeply satisfying. the waffle fries are a pleasant surprise and washing it all down with a cool lemonade is a nice contrast to the regular watered-down sodas you would expect to find at other places. although worth it, i find them to be a bit pricey (doublecheeseburger r80 + waffle fries r25 + lemonade r20 =r125). i also didn't like the fact that some products were offered on the menu, but not yet available for order.

pros: great food, different to the norm and friendly staff.
cons: pricey. not all the products displayed are available.

how is it possible that this is the only burger in gauteng worth driving out for (or eating at all)? this is simply the best burger money can buy (and at any price this burger will be a bargain). i have been to bgr a number of times, and they manage to consistently make a fantastic burger. to make such a "basic" burger so tasty is really hard to find.
i always go for acheeseburger, with "the works" and some mustard sauce - perfection!!

i know that this is not my typical review, but in line with not reviewing everything that i stuff my face with - this place surely needs a special mention.
i know that rocomammas used to be very good, but unfortunately since rocomammas was sold to spur, their burgers became mass produced, flavorless, stale bread, tasteless and sauce drenched. so in short guys - if you crave a terrific burger, haste to bgr.
my rating of 4.5 is in line with my usual rating approach (where a 5 for me is only for perfect fine-dine experience...)

how i rate and review an establishment :
1: terrible, will never return will never recommend.
2: ok, not worth special effort, i can make the food better at home...
3: satisfied, restaurant offer good service and satisfactory food, the money paid is in line with quality of food received.
4: a gem, worth visiting for a treat or special occations and referring friends.
5: the very rare and best - fine dining, incredible food, presentation, and service. honestly no more than 6 such places in south africa !

establishment: fast food
related restaurants in this class: shake shack burgers (usa and now also uk), and though i'm not fond of dukes, they are probably the closest in south africa.

food - 10/10
service 10/10
romantic factor 2/10
decor 2/10
value 9/10
satisfaction 10/10

lastly take note- i do not have time to review every chicken coop that sell food or to rate typical places, we all know what you get at these establishments and the average person does not need advice on eating at your local debonairs or spur!

nice burger joint and definitely a step up from your typical burger take away joint. the patties are real meat and the burger to bun ratio is perfect. i went for the doublecheeseburger with "the works" option. thecheesewas really good and melted into the burger, however i do believe they were a bit light on the gerkhins and sauce. which was really disappointing for me though was the fries, it was soggy, dry and generally just unappealing.
