beautiful place. the decor and feel of the restaurant is dead on, there is nothing i would change about it. for me, it felt magical. small place, cozy, baroque style. i fell in love with it.
waiter was very nice. they had a sommelier, i enjoyed that experience, his knowledge and how he served thewineproperly. we had the tartar which was quite good. also we had the ribsteak. it was excellent at first but became excessively salty. but i wouldn't say this ruined my experience. i would have given this place a 5 stars if my ribsteak would have been more on point. but i do highly recommend the restaurant!!!!

my visit to barroco is totally unplanned. last year during the f1 grand prix festival, i was just taking a stroll along st. paul street to soak in the atmosphere, as the restaurants and merchants along the street all brought out their terraces, and lots of people were just sitting in there sipping champagne , relaxing and people watching, booze was flowing fast and loud music was blasting out of the windows of restaurants and cars , you can feel the energy and vibes in the air. while i was approaching this restaurant, i noticed a larger than usual crowd in in its terrace with smoke billowing from two charcoal bbq grills and the smells were just too good to resist. so i stopped to check out what's going on, and saw grilled steaks and whole fishes were served on wooden board on a few tables. i asked the guy who was working the grill if i can order some to go, he said the food is only for consumption in the restaurant , only then did i notice a small sign with the name "barroco" hanging beside the front door. so i walked in to the restaurant and asked the receptionist for a table in the terrace, but she said it's full, instead she assigned me a seat beside the bar, since i was a bit in a rush, i accepted it.

once i sat down, the bartender greeted me right away and handed me what seems to be a thick book like bible, and i asked him what's it for, he told me it's the cocktail menu. i opened it and browsed it briefly, indeed, it's a book that documented various cocktail recipes, some even with drawings and a little history of the drink, some maybe the creation of this restaurant, at the beginning are a few pages that introduces the history of the restaurant, important figures and events along the way. i suddenly realized this must not be an ordinary restaurant as it paid so much attention to its history, culture and traditions. since my main goal is to try their food and the cocktail book was too overwhelming for me to just pick one drink out of it, i opted to skip it, instead asked for their food menu and a glass of spanishwinewhen the bartender told me this is a spanish restaurant. as i was drawn in by their grilled steaks and fishes outside, so i directly told the bartender i needed one of them, at the end i picked the steak just because i felt a bit hungry, i asked the bar tender to help me pick an appetizer, he strongly recommend the mac&cheese with truffle. i was a bit hesitant at first, as i 'v tried mac&cheese many times before and i was never impressed, but i decided to give it one last try.

while i was sippingwineand waiting for my food , i quickly checked out the interior of the restaurant, the over all ambience is that of a classic and romantic restaurant as it is inside a stonewalled house, which makes you feel like inside a castle, chandeliers are hanging from the ceiling, and there are a few other ambient lights around the room, vases and flowers can be seen in a few places, a smallwinerack was carved into the stonewall and candle lights are burning on each table, there is even a vip booth at one corner of the room with curtains and draperies which added a touch more romantic atmosphere, the only thing that's a little out of place is the moose head hung on the wall. of course, right in front of me is the bar, which is quite small but is well lighted and organized.

a short while later, the mac&cheese was brought to me. to my surprise, unlike most mac&cheese i had before, this one is served while it's still hot, i fell in love with it right after the first bite. the mac was cooked perfectly to the the point of al dente and there is just enough cheese to make the mac creamy but not overpowering it, the truffle sprinkled on the top made it much more flavorful, and it also seemed a perfect pairing with thewinei was drinking. to put in one word: amazing. this was no doubt the best mac&cheese i've ever had and is still is. i only wish i could have more as the portion is quite small. before i could finish the mac&cheese, the rib steak was also brought to me on a wooden board which added a touch of fun to the whole experience. maybe i liked the mac&cheese too much, i felt a bit underwhelmed with the steak, it was good, but i felt the meat wasn't thick enough to have the cut through feeling, and the top of it still quite wet, i would like the outside to be a touch more crispy and brownish, maybe it's just the meat wasn't top quality cut. nevertheless the source seemed quite unique, which seems to be made from all green veggies. although the steak was not perfect, but it's good enough for me to enjoy it especially with a glass of redwineon hand. over all it's quite an enjoyable experience for me, not until the bill was brought to me, did i realize all good dining experience come with a steep price, my bill was over 80$.

on my way out, i noticed that this restaurant probably has a cheaper sister restaurant right next door, which doesn't look as swanky, but i'm quite sure it belongs to the same owner, as the grill was serving food to clients of both sides.

good food, great service !. my family and i made reservations at barroco to celebrate my birthday. we all love seafood, and knew that they served a killer paella, so the decision was easy.
as soon as you arrive, you notice a really cozy, almost country-like decor, low lighting and good music. then we were greeted by our waiter, ayouba. he walked us through the drinks menu, and we were already sharing laughs; we knew it was going to be a fun night.
throughout the service, ayouba recommended wonderful dishes and equally appealingwinepairings. the restaurant was packed, but we were tented to as though we were alone.
when our main, the paella, arrived, we were slightly disappointed to see it served in a deep french oven style pot, rather than the conventional paella dish... but it was tasty nevertheless and we all enjoyed the addition of black truffle shavings, recommended by the chef.
then came dessert (the goat cheesecake, and fruit gratin with sabayon were delicious!), and the dinner was completed -- topped off by -- complementary shots of cubano rum; which we had the privilege of taking in company of our wonderful waiter.
summed up, we all left barroco with a huge smile on our faces, and extremely satisfied with our experience ! needless to say that this restaurant is highly recommended for a fun night out in old montreal, with good food, drink, and atmosphere. we will certainly be returning.
thank you to all the staff, especially ayouba, for a wonderful night.

if you are looking for a restaurant that is great for a date night, or a night of romance, barroco is the perfect place. situated in the old port, its quaint candle light, and decor are great for an intimate evening with friends. the restaurant is quite cozy, so you may have a tough time as a walk-in, we'd suggest making a reservation. enjoy a great selection of freshly created cocktails and an extensivewinemenu. 89.7 % jean-phillipe chartier a writer, designer, artist, foodie and enthusiast living in montreal, canada. you may also like... 0 rustique pie kitchen 8 aug, 2014

expensive tourist trap. we reserved a table very early in the day, and came for an early dinner. once seated, we picked an appelation controlé wine, which they said they didn't have; the had run out. we were offered instead, for the same $50 price, a vin de table (lowest type of french wine), and the waitress and staff insisted it was a "comparable vintage". i know mywineenough to know that what they were saying was blatantly wrong, and left. when i tried to argue, i was told that the waitress "was french and knew what she was talking about".
this place is such a tourist trap. it looks beautiful, but once you walk in you realize it's not only way overly expensive, but they'll cheat you into buying cheapwineand charging you a tonne for it.

absolutely stellar!!. we walked into this beautifully deccorated restaurant and took a seat at the bar. we were greeted at the bar by the manager. without even looking at the menu we asked the manager what he suggested. he quickly described the philosophy of the food and then asked us if we would like to trust him and allow him design our dinning experience. i used to work in the restaurant industry for many moons, so i was delighted for him to offer this to us. course after course was fantastic. the food was fresh, simple and full of flavour. i am also a big fan of real cocktails and the manager was able to prepare fantastic cocktails to pair with each course as well as select the perfectwinefor my date. this was my first trip to montreal and will not be my last. i will definately make it a point to visit barroco each time i make it out there.

horribly amateur service. the girl who served us obviously had zero training and had never opened a bottle ofwinebefore in her life. food was good but plate had nothing on it but the fish i ordered, no accompanying vegetable or anything. very disapointing and unrefined. trying to copy garde manger, but no. won't go back.

fantastic. i recently went to the barroco after hearing about it for so long. i loved it! from it's cosy warm dinning room and relaxed atmosphere to it's impressivewinelist, especially for such a new and intimate size restaurant. and now if i can tell you about the menu, it was out of this world. everything we had was cooked to perfection and seasoned and served perfectly . by far the most succulent meat i have ever tried, we had the rib steak and the signature short ribs! i would dare anyone to try it and not have a glowing review of this young, new, fresh restaurant in montreal's gorgeous old port!
