one cold evening. we stumbled upon barroco on a frigid montreal evening. the restaurant was warm and inviting. it was a tuesdaynightso we got a table without any issue-not sure that would be the case on a weekend. we met the lovely and vibrant waitress- rachel! she was the perfect waitress-informative-enthusiastic- aware of timng etc. we relied on rachel's expertise re the menu and wine. we enjoyed the french burgundy whites, snow crab appy and fresh oysters were a hit. we both had the duck-magnificant! enjoyed the cheese platter for dessert. the ambiance, high quality food, engaging and knowledgeable waitress really made our night. next year when we return on busines, we will come back to barroco.

good food, great service !. my family and i made reservations at barroco to celebrate my birthday. we all love seafood, and knew that they served a killer paella, so the decision was easy.
as soon as you arrive, you notice a really cozy, almost country-like decor, low lighting and good music. then we were greeted by our waiter, ayouba. he walked us through the drinks menu, and we were already sharing laughs; we knew it was going to be a fun night.
throughout the service, ayouba recommended wonderful dishes and equally appealing wine pairings. the restaurant was packed, but we were tented to as though we were alone.
when our main, the paella, arrived, we were slightly disappointed to see it served in a deep french oven style pot, rather than the conventional paella dish... but it was tasty nevertheless and we all enjoyed the addition of black truffle shavings, recommended by the chef.
then came dessert (the goat cheesecake, and fruit gratin with sabayon were delicious!), and the dinner was completed -- topped off by -- complementary shots of cubano rum; which we had the privilege of taking in company of our wonderful waiter.
summed up, we all left barroco with a huge smile on our faces, and extremely satisfied with our experience ! needless to say that this restaurant is highly recommended for a funnightout in old montreal, with good food, drink, and atmosphere. we will certainly be returning.
thank you to all the staff, especially ayouba, for a wonderful night.

if you are looking for a restaurant that is great for a date night, or anightof romance, barroco is the perfect place. situated in the old port, its quaint candle light, and decor are great for an intimate evening with friends. the restaurant is quite cozy, so you may have a tough time as a walk-in, we'd suggest making a reservation. enjoy a great selection of freshly created cocktails and an extensive wine menu. 89.7 % jean-phillipe chartier a writer, designer, artist, foodie and enthusiast living in montreal, canada. you may also like... 0 rustique pie kitchen 8 aug, 2014

i went to eat there on sunday. the ambiance very cosy and romantic. there is not too many seats.
it was not busy , a few tables, got seated right away. the special was explained to us when asked.
we ordered a deconstructed nicoise to share. it was very salty though the albacore (white tuna) was perfectly cooked as well as the other ingredients on the plate. as main we had the ribsteak with chimichurri and seafood paella.
the seafood paella tasted greated but unfortunately the scallop was not fresh!! very disappointed!
as for the ribsteak, we asked for it to be medium rare! when it came, the steak was cold!!!! how can a steak be cold? it was cooked rare to blue!!
it was sent back to the kitchen. during that wait, our waiter completely ignored us!!! didnt even come to the table to apologize! got a new steak by the barmaid, it was medium rare! but our waiter was still avoiding us!
what kind of service is that! seriously? matter of fact, ive never been to a restaurant where the service was that mediocre! came to us at the end and gave us two glasses of digestif on the house, and his words were" offer par la maison" . still didnt apologize not even asked if we had a goodnightthough the steak was not well prepared! come on!
dont think ill go back!

all in all, i adored the down-to-earth yet opulent atmosphere at barroco. the decor was classy, the music i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e (from dylan to mccartney), and the food soulful. the only criticism i can draw from this experience is the high pricing on certain items. the entirenightcame to a grand total of about $55 (tip included).

we ate here on our secondnightin montreal. i loved the ambience and we were lucky enough to get sat at a great table. the waiters were attentive and friendly. we ordered the steak (can't remember the cut) chimichurri style with mashed potatoes and the paella. both were excellent.

spare-ribs. lastnightin old montreal, we had a wonderful dinner at barroco. the staff was very friendly, service was attentive, and we sat at the bar and had specialty cocktails from melody-basil cucumber mojitos to our dessert expresso martinis! we started
with oysters- the best we have ever had! the delicious bread basket accompanied with homemade butter made with cilantro, shallots, paprika, garlic and cumin was delicious! our dinner at barroco was the best dinner i have had in montreal and this is our third trip! we started with the grilled octopus appetizer made with chorizo and red pepper sauce over a delicate bell lettuce salad. my entree was the amazing spicy paella with pieces of chorizo, lobster, prawn, shrimp and scallops prepared to perfection-so much i had to share some with my husband! my husband had the special seafood platter- delicious! if you travel to montreal, barroco is a restaurant to place at the top of your list!

interesting, tasty, lively. i just went to this restaurant lastnightwith my husband & we liked it so much that we will definitely return with friends. i had the grilled octopus, served with arugula and grilled peppers. then for my main , which was my favorite dish of the evening, i had braised veal cheeks with mushrooms and a mashed potato mousse. it was melt in your mouth good! for dessert i had the so called apple pie with caramel, seasalt drizzle. sounds great hu? well it was a dissapointment! it was a little rectangular shortbread cracker with apple on top. they should have stuck to the classic apple pie here.
the music was great , mellow rock classics , some james brown and more - fun. beautiful decor!!! i'll definitely go back but i'll try another dessert ;)

awesome. that is the only word to express our dinner at barroco on a sundaynightin montreal (as my wife and i spend our lastnightin canada). the ambiance is great and the waitstaff is excellent. our appetizer of bison tartare was the best i've ever tasted. i usually steer away from beef tartare's because they are usually bland and under-seasoned, but barroco's had that perfect blend of acidity, salty (capers), and sweet/tart (cranberries). our entrees did not dissapoint as we devoured braised short ribs (super-fork tender with a rich sauce that could be bottled and sold) and tagliatelle pasta with san marzano tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella (it's true that these tomatoes make the world of difference in a dish). we completed our meal, as we always do, by sharing a chocolate molten cake which was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. we highly recommend barroco as the must-go-to spot when visiting montreal.

outstanding performance. new yorkers can be high maintenance diners but this little gem stripped me of my critical demeanor early on: the lights were too dim to read the menu, i raised the table candle to my menu, and within a few seconds the house lights were raised ever so subtly that my husband said "someone is paying attention to their customers".

staff: our waitress melody was friendly, attentive to drink levels without prompting, and easy to share thenightwith. graham, the maitre d, is the kind of employee owners strive to hire as his goal was to see us through a gastronomical experience of excellence. thank you both.

food: my husband who ordered the filet mignon, commented "i could cut this filet with my fork, it's perfect".

my giant shrimp ceviche with a side of vegetables was a masterful fusion worthy of majorca, spain.

desert: the spanish donuts coupled with an order of a decadent chocate souffle with molten mouse should be listed on america's most wanted deserts.

people: fun, interesting, friendly and happy to be in the room.

there are two things that are certain when we return to old montreal: we will stay again at le. saint-sulpice and dine at barroco.

make the same plan!
