beautiful place. the decor and feel of therestaurantis dead on, there is nothing i would change about it. for me, it felt magical. small place, cozy, baroque style. i fell in love with it.
waiter was very nice. they had a sommelier, i enjoyed that experience, his knowledge and how he served the wine properly. we had the tartar which was quite good. also we had the ribsteak. it was excellent at first but became excessively salty. but i wouldn't say this ruined my experience. i would have given this place a 5 stars if my ribsteak would have been more on point. but i do highly recommend the restaurant!!!!

service was excellent, we had a very friendly server. setting of therestaurantwas warm and cozy. oysters at happy hour were lovely, buck an oyster. was debating between the striped bass and the rib eye. i did the steak, it was a larger cut than i anticipated but it was delicious, cooked to perfection at medium rare. will go back when i'm in town

my visit to barroco is totally unplanned. last year during the f1 grand prix festival, i was just taking a stroll along st. paul street to soak in the atmosphere, as the restaurants and merchants along the street all brought out their terraces, and lots of people were just sitting in there sipping champagne , relaxing and people watching, booze was flowing fast and loud music was blasting out of the windows of restaurants and cars , you can feel the energy and vibes in the air. while i was approaching this restaurant, i noticed a larger than usual crowd in in its terrace with smoke billowing from two charcoal bbq grills and the smells were just too good to resist. so i stopped to check out what's going on, and saw grilled steaks and whole fishes were served on wooden board on a few tables. i asked the guy who was working the grill if i can order some to go, he said the food is only for consumption in therestaurant, only then did i notice a small sign with the name "barroco" hanging beside the front door. so i walked in to therestaurantand asked the receptionist for a table in the terrace, but she said it's full, instead she assigned me a seat beside the bar, since i was a bit in a rush, i accepted it.

once i sat down, the bartender greeted me right away and handed me what seems to be a thick book like bible, and i asked him what's it for, he told me it's the cocktail menu. i opened it and browsed it briefly, indeed, it's a book that documented various cocktail recipes, some even with drawings and a little history of the drink, some maybe the creation of this restaurant, at the beginning are a few pages that introduces the history of the restaurant, important figures and events along the way. i suddenly realized this must not be an ordinaryrestaurantas it paid so much attention to its history, culture and traditions. since my main goal is to try their food and the cocktail book was too overwhelming for me to just pick one drink out of it, i opted to skip it, instead asked for their food menu and a glass of spanish wine when the bartender told me this is a spanish restaurant. as i was drawn in by their grilled steaks and fishes outside, so i directly told the bartender i needed one of them, at the end i picked the steak just because i felt a bit hungry, i asked the bar tender to help me pick an appetizer, he strongly recommend the mac&cheese with truffle. i was a bit hesitant at first, as i 'v tried mac&cheese many times before and i was never impressed, but i decided to give it one last try.

while i was sipping wine and waiting for my food , i quickly checked out the interior of the restaurant, the over all ambience is that of a classic and romanticrestaurantas it is inside a stonewalled house, which makes you feel like inside a castle, chandeliers are hanging from the ceiling, and there are a few other ambient lights around the room, vases and flowers can be seen in a few places, a small wine rack was carved into the stonewall and candle lights are burning on each table, there is even a vip booth at one corner of the room with curtains and draperies which added a touch more romantic atmosphere, the only thing that's a little out of place is the moose head hung on the wall. of course, right in front of me is the bar, which is quite small but is well lighted and organized.

a short while later, the mac&cheese was brought to me. to my surprise, unlike most mac&cheese i had before, this one is served while it's still hot, i fell in love with it right after the first bite. the mac was cooked perfectly to the the point of al dente and there is just enough cheese to make the mac creamy but not overpowering it, the truffle sprinkled on the top made it much more flavorful, and it also seemed a perfect pairing with the wine i was drinking. to put in one word: amazing. this was no doubt the best mac&cheese i've ever had and is still is. i only wish i could have more as the portion is quite small. before i could finish the mac&cheese, the rib steak was also brought to me on a wooden board which added a touch of fun to the whole experience. maybe i liked the mac&cheese too much, i felt a bit underwhelmed with the steak, it was good, but i felt the meat wasn't thick enough to have the cut through feeling, and the top of it still quite wet, i would like the outside to be a touch more crispy and brownish, maybe it's just the meat wasn't top quality cut. nevertheless the source seemed quite unique, which seems to be made from all green veggies. although the steak was not perfect, but it's good enough for me to enjoy it especially with a glass of red wine on hand. over all it's quite an enjoyable experience for me, not until the bill was brought to me, did i realize all good dining experience come with a steep price, my bill was over 80$.

on my way out, i noticed that thisrestaurantprobably has a cheaper sisterrestaurantright next door, which doesn't look as swanky, but i'm quite sure it belongs to the same owner, as the grill was serving food to clients of both sides.

don't go! the food was just ok, but what followed was ridiculous.
1) waiter completely ignored nut allergy and "forgot" to tell the kitchen. no apology just a smile ?!
2) forgot to give us one of our items
3) never once asked how we were doing, but was very carful with the young group next to us

therestaurantwas only half full, really no excuse for the terrible service. a really bad experience.

one cold evening. we stumbled upon barroco on a frigid montreal evening. therestaurantwas warm and inviting. it was a tuesday night so we got a table without any issue-not sure that would be the case on a weekend. we met the lovely and vibrant waitress- rachel! she was the perfect waitress-informative-enthusiastic- aware of timng etc. we relied on rachel's expertise re the menu and wine. we enjoyed the french burgundy whites, snow crab appy and fresh oysters were a hit. we both had the duck-magnificant! enjoyed the cheese platter for dessert. the ambiance, high quality food, engaging and knowledgeable waitress really made our night. next year when we return on busines, we will come back to barroco.

good food, great service !. my family and i made reservations at barroco to celebrate my birthday. we all love seafood, and knew that they served a killer paella, so the decision was easy.
as soon as you arrive, you notice a really cozy, almost country-like decor, low lighting and good music. then we were greeted by our waiter, ayouba. he walked us through the drinks menu, and we were already sharing laughs; we knew it was going to be a fun night.
throughout the service, ayouba recommended wonderful dishes and equally appealing wine pairings. therestaurantwas packed, but we were tented to as though we were alone.
when our main, the paella, arrived, we were slightly disappointed to see it served in a deep french oven style pot, rather than the conventional paella dish... but it was tasty nevertheless and we all enjoyed the addition of black truffle shavings, recommended by the chef.
then came dessert (the goat cheesecake, and fruit gratin with sabayon were delicious!), and the dinner was completed -- topped off by -- complementary shots of cubano rum; which we had the privilege of taking in company of our wonderful waiter.
summed up, we all left barroco with a huge smile on our faces, and extremely satisfied with our experience ! needless to say that thisrestaurantis highly recommended for a fun night out in old montreal, with good food, drink, and atmosphere. we will certainly be returning.
thank you to all the staff, especially ayouba, for a wonderful night.

over-priced, and extremely greasy. the paella was extremely greasy, and lacked depth of flavor. it's disappointing to see arestaurantthat prides itself on fine dining spanish cuisine and is unable to execute a simple paella.

if you are looking for arestaurantthat is great for a date night, or a night of romance, barroco is the perfect place. situated in the old port, its quaint candle light, and decor are great for an intimate evening with friends. therestaurantis quite cozy, so you may have a tough time as a walk-in, we'd suggest making a reservation. enjoy a great selection of freshly created cocktails and an extensive wine menu. 89.7 % jean-phillipe chartier a writer, designer, artist, foodie and enthusiast living in montreal, canada. you may also like... 0 rustique pie kitchen 8 aug, 2014

i went to eat there on sunday. the ambiance very cosy and romantic. there is not too many seats.
it was not busy , a few tables, got seated right away. the special was explained to us when asked.
we ordered a deconstructed nicoise to share. it was very salty though the albacore (white tuna) was perfectly cooked as well as the other ingredients on the plate. as main we had the ribsteak with chimichurri and seafood paella.
the seafood paella tasted greated but unfortunately the scallop was not fresh!! very disappointed!
as for the ribsteak, we asked for it to be medium rare! when it came, the steak was cold!!!! how can a steak be cold? it was cooked rare to blue!!
it was sent back to the kitchen. during that wait, our waiter completely ignored us!!! didnt even come to the table to apologize! got a new steak by the barmaid, it was medium rare! but our waiter was still avoiding us!
what kind of service is that! seriously? matter of fact, ive never been to arestaurantwhere the service was that mediocre! came to us at the end and gave us two glasses of digestif on the house, and his words were" offer par la maison" . still didnt apologize not even asked if we had a good night though the steak was not well prepared! come on!
dont think ill go back!

celebrating "local" for four years. tonight we revisited barroco for its fourth year anniversary celebration. for the occasion, there were to be only two dinner services (6pm & 9pm), something we're not very fond of, but are getting accustomed to as more and more restaurants seem to be doing nowadays.

barroco boasts one of our favorite interiors in the city. its baroque furnishings, "hunter's lodge" accessories and paintings of spanish aristocrats make for a very unique and contradictory setting; rustic yet trendy.

for tonight's occasion, chef benjamin léonard created a special "farmer's market" menu; all the ingredients were sourced from a select group of local farmers. the four-course menu, priced at $75, showcased quebec duck, lamb and cheese.

while the food tonight did have its misses, they were more than outweighed by its hits. the special menu's theme, creativity and execution definitely turn barroco into a "chef-run"restaurantin our books, not just another trendy spot trying to bank in on old montreal's tourists and yuppie crowd.
