a.w. shucks raw bar and grill

its a dive. you would never be tempted by the outward appearance, but this dive bar is definitely worth it! the monday night crab legs are awesome and theserviceis great!

fabulous food of every type along with several excellent choices of seafood and also a large beer selection.  bothserviceand food are excellent and consistent.  have been here several times and am never disappointed.  people come dressed to the hilt or casual and they are all comfortable including children.  home of one of my favorite comfort foods--oyster stew.  no one makes it better than a.w. shucks!

first visit to this raw bar. my first visit this pass saturday. the atmosphere andservicewas very good and warm. the food was outstanding and i recommend everyone to visit this best secret of norfolk. nice get away and good drinks. wow... i was impressed and plain to visit again this weekend.

went two weeks in a row and no crab legs. first week they ran out and 2 nd week the steamer was broken. rather high price for oysters. and theserviceduring off peak hours was horrendous.

so good.. i have lunch here pretty regularly however i don't get in here for dinner quite as much as i would like to. i joined a friend here for dinner last monday night and had a virtual feast for dinner. you could call it a 'feast of samples'.

while trying to decide on an entree we started off the order we started off with a side of hush puppies and tomatoes with feta. i selected the 'sauteed mussels capellini' for dinner and she ordered steamed mussels and fried calamari. we topped that off with a dozen raw oysters.

my one complaint for the night, and it's tiny would be that the entree's came out literately right after the appetizers arrived at the table. we had plates everywhere. the mussels capellini were excellent and drenched in a garlic butter sauce. you just have to try it. the oysters were served on a bed of ice and were excellent as well.

monday nights is also all you can eat crab legs night, so i know what i'll be trying out on my next visit. :)

love the lunch. one of the cool things about being "the food guy" at work is that lots of people either ask me where i'm going for lunch or to suggest a good place for this or that. i also get to take my co-workers around to some of my regular haunts and that's just what i did tuesday afternoon.

a lot of us do burgers for lunch. they're quick, easy to make and frankly they're damn good. one of my buddies wanted to try something new and i thought 'dude's never been to aw shucks', so that's where we went.

i changed my game up a little and went with a dozen raw oysters on this trip. they were large shells and there wasn't a bad oyster in the mix. my co-worker had the bacon cheeseburger which he described as one of the best burgers he's ever had. all i could do was agree with him. the burgers at aw shucks are really a best kept secret and probably my favorite in the downtown area.

all in all another great lunch!

...and burgers to!. i stopped in here for a late lunch on friday afternoon with a co-worker. late was perfect as we had missed the lunch rush. we walked in the back door and promptly sat ourselves at the raised end of the bar.

normally i don't order non-seafood items at a what i consider a seafood joint. however after having such a miserable meal at the new gourmet burger bar a couple of blocks away the night before i decided 'what the hell' i'm going for the bacon cheese burger. if you read my reviews you know i've reviewed many of them and this one sits near the top of the list.

what arrived in front of me about 10-12 minutes after ordering was a work of art as far as bacon cheese burgers go. the burger was topped with cheddar cheese and about 5 pieces of bacon with everything else on the side. the burger itself? it tasted like a steak. it was cooked to perfection and the quality of meat was 'spot on'. a perfect burger indeed.

on top of the excellent meal there was greatservicefrom behind the bar as well. i've never had a bad customer experience here the staff is always great. so check them out, this place is excellent!

had some of the bestserviceive had in a long time. luke was my waiter and he was amazing!!!!

new family favorite. we enjoy goodserviceas much as we do good food and this place has them both. the staff operates as a team and it makes the dining experience quite entertaining. the food is wonderful ( well, except for the hush puppies....but that's because we're so darned picky about them). the crap dip appetizer and crab soup were so good the first time when we took a friend back a week later we had them again! if you haven't been... go!

to comment on another review....one that said it was too loud inside.... it's a nice bar in a college town.... we''d be worried if it weren't loud.

ive been to a.w. shucks several times and in my opinion they have a solid menu with good food. but i have never had goodservicethere, my wife and i love sitting at the bar and we just cant find a good bartender in place. went yesterday and the young lady got my entrée wrong so she took the meat and left the sides for me to eat rather than serving me a new meal. my meat came 20 minutes later. unfortunately it was my birthday and sort of killed my experience

it was incredible! we went for brunch,servicewas great, atmosphere was perfect, and the food was too die for!!
the mac n cheese was the best and even though i normally loathe sausage gravy their's is off the hook!!

good lunch. i loved this tucked away, seafood/bar focused establishment. i was pleasantly surprised with theserviceand food that came from this little building with nautical ambiance. i enjoyed there baked flounder accompanied by red bud potatoes and green beans. i was joined with my cousin, who enjoyed there ole' bay wings with a side of broccoli. we were honored to have great company of gentlemen that were definitely regulars at the table beside us. it was refreshing to know that staff knew them by name and they too knew the staff by name.
i recommend that you visit a.w. shucks the first opportunity you have. you will not regret it!

delicious seacreatures. decided to give this place a try after seeing it had a 91% on urbanspoon. hostess was nice, the layout of the restaurant seemed to feel a little off but i didn't mind. my bf and i ordered cilantro-lime shrimp as an appetizer for $8. it was pretty tasty but i probably should have ordered something else. we split a large combo platter between the two of us and man was it well worth it. it was served with lots of clams, oysters, mussells, shrimps, sausages, potatoes, two mini corn on the cob, and a pound of crab legs i believe. everything was steamed perfectly and was complemented with a side of extra cocktail sauce, melted butter, sweet butter for the hushpuppies, and some old bay seasoning in a 3 oz cup. theservicewas well deserving of my $10 tip. i would love to come back again although i wish i was old enough to try some of the many beers they had..

never had anything bad here. this place is always a great pick for dinner. not so much a bar to hang out in, but def has excellent food!

love it!. one of my fave places.. i have never had anything there i didn't like.. theserviceis good, the atmosphere is great, the food is yummy, and the bathrooms are clean.

the mac and cheese = amazing!

aw yeah..... this place is the bomb. friends recommended it to us a few years ago and although we live in vb we make the trek to aw shucks whenever possible. where to start.... delicious mac and cheese, roasted garlic potatoes, tilapia, flounder, hushpuppies, crab dip, etc. okay, pretty much everything at this joint is great and cooked perfectly. monay nights they have all you can eat crab legs. the place was jam-packed last night. if you're looking for a swanky looking place, this is not it. it's a small place, a little old, but with character. theserviceis great. abslolutely awesome place. 5 stars!

yum! while in town visiting family, we decided to give this place a try. best meal we've had all week! everything served was cooked to perfection. everyone ordered a diiferent entree so we were able to sample crabcakes, shrimp, oysters, crab legs, steak and even a bacon cheeseburger.servicewas good and our tea glasses stayed filled. we will definitely return.
