consistently good. come early or late or you'll have to wait. oysters are delicious. be careful on all--you-can eat crab night; they told us they were out, but yet i could still pay full price for a single plate. when they make a mistake or out of something, they don't offer any kind of compensatory gesture (e.g., a free side, or drink, etc.).goodportion size. fun atmosphere. bar can get a bit loud. drinks aren't the weakest around, but they aren't strong either.

simply excellent. great beer selection from ane xtensive list, goodhappy hours specials, fantastic oysters, and very knowledgeable wait staff. the soft shell crab is great, and of course any oysters, raw or fried. the sides are also excellent. i love the spinach. the go-to place for seafood in norfolk.

i like beer!. and they have a "stout" selection (hehe)...

the waitstaff was very helpful with choosing my beer. she asked me many questions as to what other beers i liked and she brought me over 4 different beers for me to try. she went above and beyond (big tip!)

have not tried their food, but if it's anything like the beer they serve i should begoodto go!

great seafood. we started out with an appetizer of shrimp and grits, which was very good. the waitress was friendly, polite, knowledgeable and efficient. she was able to give advice when asked and even knew her beers. i had rockfish (as show on the specials board) and my boyfriend had a seafood platter, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. the rock fish was blackened and absolutely delicious. the price was high but worth the delicious food. even the sides aregood(id go for the mac and cheese, hush puppies, broccoli or collards). it is a bit chilly in the restaurant so be sure to layer it up. i had a great time here and can't wait to eat here again! i'd give this place 5 out of 5 stars!
you should try it!

so good.. i have lunch here pretty regularly however i don't get in here for dinner quite as much as i would like to. i joined a friend here for dinner last monday night and had a virtual feast for dinner. you could call it a 'feast of samples'.

while trying to decide on an entree we started off the order we started off with a side of hush puppies and tomatoes with feta. i selected the 'sauteed mussels capellini' for dinner and she ordered steamed mussels and fried calamari. we topped that off with a dozen raw oysters.

my one complaint for the night, and it's tiny would be that the entree's came out literately right after the appetizers arrived at the table. we had plates everywhere. the mussels capellini were excellent and drenched in a garlic butter sauce. you just have to try it. the oysters were served on a bed of ice and were excellent as well.

monday nights is also all you can eat crab legs night, so i know what i'll be trying out on my next visit. :)

love the lunch. one of the cool things about being "the food guy" at work is that lots of people either ask me where i'm going for lunch or to suggest agoodplace for this or that. i also get to take my co-workers around to some of my regular haunts and that's just what i did tuesday afternoon.

a lot of us do burgers for lunch. they're quick, easy to make and frankly they're damn good. one of my buddies wanted to try something new and i thought 'dude's never been to aw shucks', so that's where we went.

i changed my game up a little and went with a dozen raw oysters on this trip. they were large shells and there wasn't a bad oyster in the mix. my co-worker had the bacon cheeseburger which he described as one of the best burgers he's ever had. all i could do was agree with him. the burgers at aw shucks are really a best kept secret and probably my favorite in the downtown area.

all in all another great lunch!

...and burgers to!. i stopped in here for a late lunch on friday afternoon with a co-worker. late was perfect as we had missed the lunch rush. we walked in the back door and promptly sat ourselves at the raised end of the bar.

normally i don't order non-seafood items at a what i consider a seafood joint. however after having such a miserable meal at the new gourmet burger bar a couple of blocks away the night before i decided 'what the hell' i'm going for the bacon cheese burger. if you read my reviews you know i've reviewed many of them and this one sits near the top of the list.

what arrived in front of me about 10-12 minutes after ordering was a work of art as far as bacon cheese burgers go. the burger was topped with cheddar cheese and about 5 pieces of bacon with everything else on the side. the burger itself? it tasted like a steak. it was cooked to perfection and the quality of meat was 'spot on'. a perfect burger indeed.

on top of the excellent meal there was great service from behind the bar as well. i've never had a bad customer experience here the staff is always great. so check them out, this place is excellent!

new family favorite. we enjoygoodservice as much as we dogoodfood and this place has them both. the staff operates as a team and it makes the dining experience quite entertaining. the food is wonderful ( well, except for the hush puppies....but that's because we're so darned picky about them). the crap dip appetizer and crab soup were sogoodthe first time when we took a friend back a week later we had them again! if you haven't been... go!

to comment on another review....one that said it was too loud inside.... it's a nice bar in a college town.... we''d be worried if it weren't loud.

ive been to a.w. shucks several times and in my opinion they have a solid menu withgoodfood. but i have never hadgoodservice there, my wife and i love sitting at the bar and we just cant find agoodbartender in place. went yesterday and the young lady got my entrée wrong so she took the meat and left the sides for me to eat rather than serving me a new meal. my meat came 20 minutes later. unfortunately it was my birthday and sort of killed my experience

good but not worth the prices. went here with the family a week ago and we had a nice meal but it's way over priced. the fried calamari wasgoodbut the portion was for one person not for the three of us to share and their oysters are $20.00 a dozen???!?!?? even local oysters are wicked expensive. the crab cakes i had were reallygoodand my husbands greek salad with tuna wasgoodand a large portion and our daughter had a hamburger with was cooked perfectly. i guess we might go back again but not for oysters!!!

always crowded... agoodsign?. every time i'm craving shucks, i get there and there's a two hour wait :( but the times i have actually gotten there without a long wait i've really enjoyed. my fiance is in love with their mac & cheese, so he always gets it as a side. always. i usually get either greek or caesar salad with seared tuna on top. the tuna is always fresh and well prepared. i also like the grilled tuna sandwich or crabcake sandwich. i don't care for raw oysters, but friends have told me shucks hasgoodones. and they have a pretty decent drink menu too. i'd recommend going there either at a random time during the week (not 7pm on a friday or saturday) and/or go when you have some time to spare because there's usually a wait, but it's always been worth the wait in my opinion.
