love the food. i agree with the bulk of the posters here.... the food is awesome... the staff sucks. i go about 4 times a year, always order the walley blues, am rarely disappointed, but the servers are a rather judging bunch. the banter? most of the staff are condescending and rude.... but whatever works for them. they are very narrow minded... but whatever. just ignore them and go with a friend and enjoy the food.

awesome little spot. my husband found this spot online when we were visiting minneapolis. if you blink you'll miss this place. we didn't even see it since there was construction around it going on. the seating was interesting and the line moved fast. the food was great, especially the winter special. the only down side is that there isn't much of a selection and one of the cooks in the back was making a lot of unnecessary noise (moaning, screaming, etc.)

overrated-trust me!!. i don't understand all the hype? waited a good hour or so for average cash only eggs benedict and blueberry pancakes. extremely limited basic menu choices done only ok. dirty place-cook breathes on and man handles everything. seating tight-with people lurking right behind hurrying you up. there are many other better places to enjoy breakfast in mn. it's almost a tourist trap at this point. go elsewhere!

very small diner with excellent food. fun employees who are brash and direct to keep the seats turning. value priced. no plastic taken which is a good thing.

you are not a true minnesotan if you haven't eaten at al's. you just aren't. so go to al's and fulfill your obligation immediately. or move to sconie.

amazing! but you have to know what to expect because it's very simplifed. you need to pay with cash (there's an atm across the street if you forget). if you have a place to be after breakfast make sure you leave time to wait in line. al's only has 13 bar stools (a big part of the experience!) so the line can get long - especially on the weekend. also not a good place to bring a large group for that reason as well.

all in all, very worth the wait, if you have time to spare - and make sure you know what to expect!

classic old-school al's breakfast never disappoints. pancakes are out of this world eggs corn beef hash browns bacon it's like a grease paradise. always come back. so popular need to stand in line for a least an hour. the ambience is great it's an experience you need to have.

best breakfast in town. they have really awesome salsa and their pancakes are on point. definitely worth the wait. if you have severe claustrophobia or a party of more then 3 i would maybe go somewhere else.

i've been going to al's for 15 years. i've never had a bad meal. it's the best breakfast food i've ever had. yes, you usually have to wait awhile but trust me when i say, it's well worth the wait.

al's is the best breakfast place in the universe. i have enjoyed this place for 25 years. my only regret is when the cheese steak experiment didn't take off. i attribute this to ignorance (not intended to be mean) of what a luxury it was to get the real thing in the cities. regardless, keep making it great!

had chocolate chip pancakes and sausage. my meal wasn't out of the ordinary, but they have what i perceive to be a unique selection of omelette combinations. it has a cute atmosphere, but if you don't like interacting with other people or being crammed into a small space then this isn't the place for you. we made conversation with the people we sat next to, you're almost forced to as there isn't much in the way of personal space (they were friendly and we had a good time meeting them). they seat about ten, and as the morning progresses, more and more people line up to get a spot. we lucked out and got a spot (2 people) a bit after 8am. the earlier you go, the less likely you are to have to wait.
worth the experience, food was fairly inexpensive (6 for sausage and pancakes, about 8.5 for an omelette combo plus hashbrowns), and the staff was quite friendly and attentive.

the most pompus restaurant ever!. went there for breakfast. guy did the regular routine cooked food, glass of water, etc...but once the glass was empty, i was ignored for the rest of the dining experience. they would walk right passed you even when you were looking at them in the eyes. it got so bad that i had to order a glass of oj just to get some sort of beverage. i swear, just because you are a historical landmark does not give you the right for to have bad customer service. the food wasn't even that special (sausage, eggs, toast).

i received poor service and burnt pancakes. are ya kidding me!? this was supposedly the best place in the cities for breakfast. i would reccomend you go to the ideal diner instead. it has the same quant atmosphere, prices, lack of a card reader but amazing pancakes.

2nd best breakfast in metro. great food at an awsome price! i would give it 4 out of 5 stars for the food alone, as a whole 3.5 out of 5, just because place is small and wait is long sometimes. but food is worth it! cash only though remember that. if you like this place you have to try the north pole in newport mn...food is better, and place is 50 style diner but much bigger then al s.

al’s is certainly known for it’s unique experience, however, that’s not the main reason i keep returning. so let’s talk about the food. pancakes are by far the most famous of their offerings. like flapjacks with walnuts and blueberries? try the whole wheat wally blues. if you venture there in the fall, they usually serve up pumpkin pancakes. so tasty! however, when it’s all said and done, my favorite dish is the josé. imagine a greasy, crispy, hashbrown heaven. then, put salsa, poached eggs, and melty cheddar cheese on top and add a side of rye toast. drooling yet? i know, me too.
