would not go again... met up with a friend for nice evening to hang out and have a bite to eat.. as you walk into the cafe at the entrance there's a sign that basically says if you just want to play a game it is $5, understandable otherwise there's freeloaders.. obviously reading something like that you'd think that if you're a patron already when ordering a meal that you wouldn't have to pay to play - my friend and i both ordered meals and were both charged an additional $5 each to play a game (which we barely did).
along with this disappointment i ordered the chicken sandwich for my meal - my sandwich had next to nothing for chicken in it, might as well have been a veggie sandwich (to give you an idea of the amount - there was less than what you'd get off a chicken wing). very disappointing! i honestly don't know how someone can even feel okay about having that sandwich leave the kitchen the way it did. (picture will be posted).

all in all i did not have a good experience here which is why i will not be goingbackany time soon unless i hear some positive changes have been made.

great experience. i recently visited across the board for the first time with a group of 13. i ordered the roma sandwich and mac and cheese, with a coffee. many of my colleagues ordered alcoholic beverages. i thought the food was great.

olaf helped our group select a game, and walked us through a round of it. he was animated, fun, and a huge help! we started with werewolves of miller's hollow, and finished with concept. i really, really liked the werewolves game.

i'm not really huge into board games, but i enjoyed my visit at across the board, and would definitely comebackwith more friends.

i know some people noted that the food was a little pricey, and the portions small. while i agree the food might be a little pricey, i wasn't at all disappointed with it, and the portions seemed reasonable to me. i feel the prices are completely fair, considering i am sure many people just pay the 5$ cover, order a drink, and stay for a few hours.

overall, great experience. i would recommend it, and i am sure i'll be back.

are you "game"?. way too much fun! brings usbackto real conversation, live face time, and renewed enjoyment of each other's physical proximity. all surrounded by marvellous food and drink, laughter, wonderful service, and ---- games! real board games! from old to new. who could resist a game called killer bunnies with a pitcher of fort garry and a colosseum pizza. check in, unplug, and unwind. you won't regret it, and may get hooked! love it!

fun and tasty. wow -- what a great place! we went as a family with our child and had a blast. we played two excellent games during our stay and ate delicious food. the seating fee adds up for a family but it is cheaper than a movie and way more fun! the selection of games is truly vast and of very high quality. they are very well organized in a library fashion, and the staff is very eager and knowledgable with games selection.

the food is very good. in particular, the across the board is excellent value, and the salad rolls are wonderful and incorporate creative tastes and textures. would gobackfor more food, as the selection is great, and it is healthy. love the focus on fresh, whole foods. keep it up!

instead of offering mere cups of coffee (which are not refilled), it would be nicer to have a small french press so it would be clear this is a no refill situation, and give me the satisfaction of a cup and a bit.

the noise level gets pretty high when the cafe is full, but we weren't disturbed because we were so focused on our game.

so far, we have seen the cafe full each time we visited. if this keeps up, i can see them expanding to the basement area. that would be swell!

this place is awesome! i have yet to try the food but the staff is super nice. the owner is really cool and explains every game to you if he has a moment. they have a huge selection of board games and the prices are incredibly fair. the price you pay to play board games is incredibly fair and they have great prices on beer and other beverages. this is important to me as it allows me to frequent the spot and play lots of board games without breaking the bank! the food looked really good too. i think this is an example of a perfect business model. a great idea surrounded by friendly staff, a great menu, and prices that are actually fair. these make me want to comebackand actually support a business, instead of trying once and then moving on. this place will have a loyal customer base very fast as i have already become one of them and i hope to see it succeed. i had an awesome time yesterday and olaf (the owner) strayed us away from our usual pictionary and introduced us to two amazing games that were lots of fun. we are going to try and make this place a weekly thing.

stopped here for a quick bite and they had an interesting menu which should satisfy both adult and child... and games for the inner child! i had the king of tokyo noodle bowl and they didn't holdbackor go skimpy on anything. the beef was tender and the miso broth was delicious. full of flavour and lots of veggies, but not overwhelming. side caesar and mouse trap for the kids were perfect for a quick bite. i can't wait to try a few more of the items on the menu and comebackwith friends for a game night with cocktails! great idea for a casual fun night out and looking forward to the veggies rolls and pizza next time.

i was really excited to finally get here and the selection of games is huge and interesting. they definitely deliver.

the food was good. i had a pizza which was delicious. it's a cool atmosphere. i'm a little disappointed that they charge you to play games on top of the food. i definitely think that there should be a minimum limit per person and then the $5 per person fee would be waived. it would just make it more enticing to go back.

one weird problem i had when i was there was that they were frying onions (or something i'm not sure) and my eyes were burning and watering. onions are the only thing that does that to me but that's never happened at a restaurant before. i was seated way at thebackand i was so affected that i had to go to the bathroom and rinse my eyes. i honestly thought i might have to leave. it makes me wonder if they have adequate ventilation for a grill.

if you're in the city with friends and you don't have anything else to do on a weekend, drop by across the board at the exchange district to play boardgames. choose from the latest games or the classics, they will probably have it. $5 cover charge for 3 hours of fun and access to their library of boardgames is a steal. better to make reservations though as they are fully booked on weekends. we were only able to get a table because another customer cancelled. we will definitely comebackagain. their dessert selection are from lilac bakery. i ordered the cheesecake, just your average cheesecake, enough to satisfy my craving. come here for the experience.

fun games but poor food and service. i took my husband here for his birthday. we did have a great time playing games, there is hundreds! but were disappointed with the food, mostly the cost vs what you got. i ordered a caesar to start which was $7.00 and not even filled, it was also rather watery. considering how slow the food service was (or waiter only camebackto our table once in the span of 3 hours) my drink was probably sitting around for a while before it got to our table. we had the chips and bean dip which was actually quiet good but also ordered a small cheese board which was basically something i could have bought at superstore and put out at home to snack on. when you go out, you expect a little more. i would gobackto play games but would probably just order some popcorn and keep it at that.

fun night "in". my friends and i love it here, and so does most of the city as it seems. place is always packed, so take advantage of their reservations (by phone or website). nice idea for an outing that still feels like staying in. cheap too, as they only charge a $5 sitting fee. you could easily spend hours here so that is a bargain. they have tons of fun games, and the owner olaf, is very knowledgeable and helpful. want to try something you're not familiar with? friendly staff are trained to know how to play every game so they can teach you. game recommendations: cash n' guns and king of tokyo.

haven't tried a lot of their food, but what i've had has been very good. i loved their salsa fresca; so fresh and light. unfortunately it looks like they took it off the menu. (if you're reading, atb, please bring it back!!!) if you're looking for an assortment of snacks over a meal, the across the boards are the perfect choice and a good variety to share as a table, with meats/cheeses/crackers and more. the chutneys are delicious! their popcorn is also made to order and they've upgraded with more flavours.
as for beverages, their smoothies are fresh and not too sweet. (but again, it seems they have removed them from the menu. bring thembackatb!!) and they are also licensed, so wine/beer/spirits are available.

bottom line: cute place, good food. if you like games, you'll love it here.

the concept of this place is awesome! great price for hours of fun and there is a huge selection of games to choose from. the menu had the perfect options for food you would want to eat while socializing (gotta try the bean dip!). i'm hesitant to gobackdue to bad service though. being a server myself, i can understand saturday nights being busy, but when there are only 10-12 tables in your establishment and 5+ servers there is no excuse. when we first arrived we were told that a table would be cleared. stood and watched a gentleman take 1-2 glasses at at time to the kitchen, probably took him 10 minutes to clear our table. we were seated and waited at least 20 minutes for anyone to come over to us. i had to go up to the counter to ask if we order up there and was snapped at by our waitress "i'll be over when i can." ok... thanks for stopping by at least to say i'll be with you in a moment. anyways waited another 15 minutes to order, and was impressed she didn't need to write anything down for our large table. well that was a mistake since none of us got the right order (2x of two different items, wrong drinks, missing drinks). she never camebackto check up on us, until an hour later to tell us it was last call. usually i can let a few things slide being from the same profession, but this was brutal and she seemed to mess everything up with no apologies. hopefully my next visit will be better one.

aking over for long-time occupant, the fixx, across the board game café sits in the heart of old market square. whereas fixx was a hub for bureaucratic power lunches, board café targets a laidbackcrowd, in for a healthy lunch, or ready to spend the day with some board games. for $5, you get access to their game library for the rest of your stay—and a considerable library it is. by my count, they have over 600 games at your disposal. not to geekify myself too much, i spent some hours playing dungeons & dragons in my pre-university days. this would have been a fun place to spend time with a few glasses of wine and some all-day gaming. sadly, i grew up and there’s very little time for games—but lots of time for food!

just. the. best. i made reservations for my husband and i and three other couples for a friday night - at the end of the night, all eight of us agreed it had been one of the best nights out in a long time.

we were there from 7pm - midnight and we could have stayed longer. i am so thrilled that winnipeg has such a neat place to spend a terrific evening with friends.

we all drank and ate our fill throughout the night, starting with dinner (the portions are healthy and the prices are totally reasonable) and then snacking on popcorn the rest of the evening. zero complaints about the food. the "beached whale" salad was wonderful, and the large sized "across the boards" (a board with cured meats, cheeses, veggies, nuts, seeds, and speciality chutneys/sauces) were exquisite. perfect for snacking and gaming.

the game master, will, showed us some terrific and absolutely hilarious games. it's safe to say i haven't laughed that hard in a long time. we also played some classics. game wise, if you have 6 or less for players, for sure try "guns & cash".

we will definitely bebacksoon, i cannot say enough terrific things about this amazing place. if you're considering going, don't wait, you won't regret it.
