williams soul food express

there's some serious home-style country cooking going on at williams! walking in it has, to me, more of a 50's diner feel with vinyl on the walls and motown and 60's soul playing at a healthy volume, love it!

the menu leans hard on fried chicken and catfish plus a daily special. the "soul" comes in with sides like collard greens, black eyed peas, cabbage etc. as the legit reviews have mentioned, the chicken is very good. it's not the over processed, hyped commercial stuff but the kind you use to get at sunday dinner after church when the whole family got together at grandma's place. the sides were all fresh-made including both the sweet potato and regular fries: a+
the black eyed peas were also a hit. well seasoned and cooked down like mom's. the sweet tea was great, not sickeningly sweet, just right and fresh. all in all a very good home-style affair.

our server was very friendly but overwhelmed. she apparently was the only one on the floor and was looking after her kids too. while it truly is a family place, it didn't help the speed or attentiveness of the service. even if properly staffed, frying chicken per order takes sometimeso don't be in a hurry or opt for a different entrée.

we have been meaning to eat at williams soul food express for the last couple weeks. last night we stopped in for dinner. this is a very friendly, happy group and they make you feel welcome. the brightly painted walls display a wonderful collection of soul/r&b lps. while waiting for the food we had a greattimereminiscing over the different titles and artists we grew up listening to. hearing those wonderful songs playing was great! we had decided on the tuesday night special of meatloaf with two sides and choice of roll or cornbread. fantastic meatloaf! great black eyed peas, really good green beans, great fresh salad and good okra. the owners are very sweet and make every from scratch so you're not getting any processed or frozen foods. they give you huge portions for a low price with a happy attitude in a spotless clean restaurant. we will definitely be back!

highly recommend. my husband and i went for the firsttimelast friday. i had the fried catfish and he had the smothered pork chops. both were very good! laura (the owner) came to check on us and to see how we like the menu. she even asked and received suggestions. the cole slaw is very good! i never had cole slaw with apples in it. i will definitely go back.

beautiful restaurant in a motel parking lot with plenty of seats. much easier to find.
new menu: more chicken dinner choices, daily specials, kids meals and delicious deserts. pulled pork and ribs served on saturday and sunday. take some soul home with 8, 12 and 16 piece chicken platters with sides. now serving breakfast too.
the ownership and staff remain the same and the food is the kind of stuff you’ll talk about for years. my latest trip i had the smothered pork chops. the dictionary has no words to describe the taste but just imagine a tender chop smothered in gravy that would make cardboard taste good.

little update. if you think the fried chicken is good, try the smothered chicked. they don't smother the chicken with a pillow, they use gravy. brown, rich, delightful gravy. the bad news? friday night is the onlytimethey smother chicken. i don't want to be a customer.......i want to be adopted.

a dining experience. i almost didn’t believe all of these reviews. no one can be that good. boy, was i wrong. this little place deserves all that praise and more. i’ll start with the fresh coleslaw that is just beyond description. (granny’s recipe they said) i also had the baked beans which are unlike anything i have ever had. i would have settled for a washtub full and skip everything else. i sampled my wife’s sweet potatoes which were heavenly and i don’t even like sweet potatoes. maybe because i just never tasted these before. she also had cabbage and loved it. the rolls are perfect and the ice tea is fresh and tasty. nothing frozen or canned here. everything is fresh and made with genuine pride. all employees are friendly and we almost felt like it was sunday dinner at grandma’s house. i should mention they also have chicken. crisp juicy fresh chicken that is cooked as you wait. i also took home some lemon pepper boneless wings for a snack tomorrow. sadly, they were gone by 11 pm.
if this is soul food then these folks have a lot of soul and i think i might now have a little soul myself after this dining experience. yes, it isn’t just dinner, it’s a dining experience.

food and people are great. i have eaten there a few times. the only negative is that i am not sure they should have "express" in the name. eachtimeit has taken a longtimeto get our food. but, it tastes delicious.

my daughter and i ate there today . firsttimeand it won't be the last. truly good food the staff were super friendly as well. i predict they may have to expand

this is one of the hardest reviews i've made because i can't say enough good things about this place. my husband got takeout for the firsttimeon saturday. we both had fried chicken dinners and agreed it was the best fried chicken we've ever had. after my dinner traveled a 20 minute ride home, plus settling down to eat, by thetimei dug into my second piece it was still hot and steamy on the inside and crispy on the outside. i had greens and mac & cheese, and both were fantastic. you can immediately detect the love they put into greens. so flavorful with nice surprises of meat that i assume is ham hock and the mac & cheese was delicious and creamy. i sent my husband back the following wednesday for the chicken spaghetti. i don't know what they do to that concoction of greatness but it is highly addictive. i couldn't stop eating it. i was in a state of euphoria. i had the rest of it for breakfast! thistimearound we tried the candied yams and the hushpuppies. next on my list is the catfish. this is my new favorite place and the folks that run it are about as sweet as it gets. don't put off eating here. you won't be sorry. it's the real deal!

firsttimein and i have to say amazing! i had fried chicken, mac n cheese, and green beans. i never thought i would eat chicken as good as my gmas but i will say its better.
