my mom, her siblings, and parents used to stay in puraswalkam (20+ years) and used to regularly eat from this place. took everyone for breakfast on saturday and the place was packed to the hilt. the reason was quite obvious once we got our food as every dish was amazing. the sambhar and especially the kara chutney were downright awesome, and my mom and her sisters said the taste was as brilliant as ever. we had idly, vadai, ghee roast, nei podi dosai, poori, masala dosai, parotta kurma. the vadai was crisp to perfection on the outside and soft on the inside. please dont go here expecting to be doted upon by the waiters, they do a fast and neat job because of the crowd, any request of extra chutney or sambhar is addressed. the kurma for the parotta was a bit on the softer side for my taste but was enjoyed by others.

visited this place after reading all the hypes on social media & zomato. was really eager to taste their sambar, as thats been the talk of the topic everywhere. i was a little late for breakfast time, went around 11.15 but went ahead and ordered couple of idlis for myself and the wife. ourself & the couple who sat opposite to us were the last to order idli was the last i presume because after which the waiter said idli is over. had to wait sometime and then came the idli. though i understand it was past 11, but surprisingly the idli wasn't hot at all. neither was the sambar too. idli could have been an already made one, but they did not even have hot sambar. coming to the taste part. sambar wasn't worth all the gaga and hypes at all. it was tasty i give you that, but i know places that have better sambar that you can just drink, it's that tasty. this was just one those home made types taste. so that was a disappointment. for the next order i went for sambar idly and the wife had poori masala. poori was good and sambar vada was also nice. but again the usual taste.
closed off and asked for bill. to my surprise, idli was charged per piece. and about 16 rs for an idli!! that's pricey. i even had a doubt if i was charged for the opposite couple who ordered idli and confirmed with the waiter but it was per piece and i was charged for 4 pcs. well overall, a not bad experience. will i go back? well, if in purasaiwakkam and looking for a pure veg hotel, then yes.

this was in my bucket list to taste the sambar idli and vada served by them. i got in here on a sunny noon and not lucky enough to have them. i ordered mini meals and curd vada. at an amazingly budgeted price, mini meals is served with three different rice, subzi, poori, and jhangri. although i didn't like the mint rice was having so much raw spices, i liked the curd vada and ordered them next week in my breakfast.

talking about the interior, location and service, it is on the commercial streets of pursaiwalkam under a heritage building. staff needs to groomed to improve customer experience. believe me it is crowded with servers even though there is no diner.

if you find yourself in a place where sambhar is served more than water on your table, and also when the accompaniments in your plate are more than the order itself - know that you are in welcome hotel. they are called as legends for a reason. i would like to call it as a service to humanity. it's an honour to visit such a legendary place.

absolutely easy to do this write-up, as all i can say to describe their food is 'top-notch'. started with idli that comes with two option - idli sambhar and idli chutney sambhar. we opted for idli sambhar (₹14/pc). it's a pleasure to witness the sambhar pouring ceremony.

the medu vadai (₹25/pc) was crispy with no trace of oil. their khichdi (₹45) is easily one of the best in chennai. podi dosai (₹80) came with an overdose of ghee but come on who complains when ghee is tad bit more on your food😛. the slightly watery semiya payasam (₹25) was mildly sweet and that's exactly how i like it. coffee (₹23) completed this awesome breakfast experience.

total bill was ₹266 including 2 more idlis that's not mentioned in the post (totally 4) and a bottle of pepsi.

one of the legendary outlets that has stood over test of the time. tried their much spoken - idly and barotta kuruma. the idly was soft and spongy. the sambar is kinda of jain flavorsome as it doesn't have strong dash of onion and garlic. the barotta on the other hand was big in size and fluffy which went well with the kuruma. don't remember the exact bill amount but i'm pretty sure these two stuffs costed me below 100 bucks. vfm ambience and parking: there is nothing sort of parking here as the premises is located in one of the busiest commercial streets of chennai. you can find a slot for two wheeler on the footpath in the front way with the security's help. four wheelers will definitely find it an herculean task to park the vehicle anywhere around 500 metres in the vicinity. the ambience is same as that of 80s restaurant and the place located in a congested area is always crowded

it is actually a spot for purasaivakkam. 90% of the people will eat after their shopping at purasaivakkam. their sambar idly is the ultimate dish no one can beat. recently the taste of the sambar is not up to the mark as it was like 2 years. thougchoupseyh it is famous for its chola puri with kadalai chopsuey. it’s a best budget hotel forever.

no fancy interiors, no fancy furniture and no fancy billboards yet people flock to this place. speaks volumes about their popularity.

one of the best places in chennai for south indian items especially the tiffin items. always crowded. tough to find a seat for yourselves. but amongst this cacophony, the servers do a top job of getting you the dishes you asked for. and the icing of the cake is that the menu is priced light on your pocket.

lack of parking space nearby could be a downer.
