no fancy interiors, no fancy furniture and no fancy billboards yet people flock to this place. speaks volumes about their popularity.

one of the best places in chennai for southindianitems especially the tiffin items. always crowded. tough to find a seat for yourselves. but amongst this cacophony, the servers do a top job of getting you the dishes you asked for. and the icing of the cake is that the menu is priced light on your pocket.

lack of parking space nearby could be a downer.

hey guys. hope you are good. it’s good to be back again for another blog. this time it was a new facebook friend of mine, who told me about this hotel at pursaiwalkkam. i asked if she could take me to the place and give a brief about the hotel. she was so kind enough to take me from motcham theatre bus stop to the hotel and again dropping me back to the place after the dinner.

i was waiting for 29c at the mylapore tank bus stop, but god had other ideas. it was 29 that came to my rescue that had a different route and not the usual stella maris – mop vaishnav – wcc route. it was royapettah hospital – pudhupet – dasprakash route. i reached the place earlier than the usual and was waiting for her. then we proceeded to the hotel.

there was parking available for 2 wheelers just outside the entrance and the security showed us the place to park.
the menu written beautifully in tamizh just near the entrance.
we went upstairs to the 1st floor that had some open view of the area. it was cool to see flashy lights all through the road viz., a2b, madharsha, etc.

the hall was supposedly empty and we finally had a table. then began our conversation about every topic that existed on earth mainly on facebook (mark, thanks da)! the server came to our table and we ordered the usp of the hotel, idly sambhar.

idly sambhar – inr 30/-

they serve 2 idlies per plate and some ghetti coconut chutney. you can see that the idly is experiencing sambhar-gasm and it was fantabulous to eat it. some spoons of idly-sambhar went into my tummy without the chutney, as you forget to see what’s next to the plate. the sambhar needs a special mention here. the other hotels i have eaten so far have yellow coloured sambhar but here it has high tone of red. it also tastes good and that’s why people keeping coming to it again and again. kudos to the team for maintaining it all these years. so we can say that ratna café is to triplicane in the same terms welcome hotel is to pursaiwalkkam. it is so sad to note that i do not have the picture of the sambhar-gasmed idly.

though we were experiencing our idly-sambhar, we were still talking uncontrollably and the entire crowd had their eyes on us. we were laughing our hearts out. then we ordered the next big thing – chola poori.

chola batura – inr 70/-

the typical northindianbreakfast, this is served here only from the evenings till night. i like this punjabi dish so much that, i often ask for an extra cup of chola / chickpea / bengal gram (dei ethane per da veipinga ithuku)! the batura is too big to host an airplane inside it and it was fluffy. just see the smile on the server’s face while bringing it! ithan ya namma aalunga .. ipdi kudutha thane sapda thonum! chickpeas are a rich source of proteins and wikipedia says it is about 7500 yrs old and one of the earliest cultivated crops.

i finished the poori with the chola but she just had the masala from the chola and didn’t have the chickpea. surprisingly, i didn’t ask for an extra cup (

where📍: welcome hotel

what⁉️ : sambar idli☘rava dosa☘fried rice🍲

ambience:⭐️⭐️⭐️
a quaint old place with friendly staffs, quick service and amazing food❤️💯the restaurant seems to be crowded always by the locals and has set a great standard in providing quality food at really affordable prices👍

food:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
rava dosa : one of the best rava dosa's i've had after apoorva sangeetha's. perfectly crispy dosa dipped in the piping hot sambar and two types of chutney😇is pureeee blisssss❤️💯no words to explain the feeling of relishing this southindiantiffin😍

sambar idli : two hot idli's on the plate and the staff comes with a hot cup of sambar and pours it on your plate and puts a dollop of ghee on top of that, which melts in the hot sambar and gives an amazing fragrance😘pahhhh enna oru arumayana vasam, it just makes you devour the idli's in no time😜and keeps you going for another plate too😅

fried rice : southindianrestaurant la fried rice ah🤔was quite apprehensive of how it would taste but they proved me wrong , the rice was cooked to perfection with no artificial preservatives 👍❤light on my tummy and high on flavours😍was so good that my grandpa approved of my choice too😉

vfm: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
💰 range : 50 - 120

ps : all their tiffin items are too good. it's been my "go to" spot whenever i shop at purasawalkam😁also do try out their chola batura which is one of their specialities, recommended by one of the regular customers😊

ps: this place is not for ambience. great for delicious southindianfood.

unnecessarily hyped hotel. the sambar is not at all good. there are 100s of far better southindianrestaurants available in chennai.

taste : not good, 1/5
ambiance: clean, 3/5
service: prompt, 4/5
cost: approx 300 for 2, 4/5

worst service ever experienced. spoke to the owner directly for the quantity of food being given in parcel & his view was u get only this much for this quantity & wen asked his reply was " will give the hotel to my person as gift" but this is wat u wil get in parcel. take it if u like it or leave it. lacks in cleanliness and the employees doesn't wear gloves with serving food. best part of it... it is rated in top 10 hotels for southindianfood. no wonder they got this. at little higher prices with good quality u can opt for raaj bhavan hotel which is approx 50 myrs from dat place.

i share a strong bonding with this place ever since my childhood. one of the fondest memories of my childhood definitely does include, waking up to the smell of welcome hotel's sambar. my thatha would drench my vada with this sambar and all that love ! 💟😁
that's how my weekends breakfast used to be.

this hotel's sambar is one of the phenomenal one's in the city ! and i strongly recommend this place as one of the best and must go places in chennai for southindianvegetarian food !

i can go on and on about their sambar, i love it so damn much. its reddish orange in colour, thin and is so aromatic. their taste of sambar cannot be matched by anybody else. i bet.

never a bad experience with this one.

few of the must orders here :

idly, vadai, sambhar vadai, dhosa
and all those dishes that needs sambar 😂😁

pricing is very minimal, so it's win-win here.

usually it's very busy and always packed, so obviously it's noisy. so ambiance isn't so great !
but their sambar is worth that !

bottom line - sambhar machan's first go-to place in the city !

good typical southindianfood for good price. very satisfying to the pocket. coffee is great.had an incident where we were hanging out with friends and fell short of 100 bucks. we acted as though we are still drinking the coffee all though it was empty. too funny.

this is the best place to have southindianfood and the price is also reasonable..
the best thing about this restaurant is that they are very generous in serving saambar unlike the other restaurants who serve it in a tiny cup and make you pay if you want extra sambaar...
so the next time you're shopping in purusalwakam, make sure you drop in and have bonda, saambaar idly and masala dosa!!
