went last night for the first time. there was a wait for about 5 minutes for a table, and we were initially seated outside. a hot water bottle was brought out for the child in our group. we ordered, then were offered a table inside when one came up.
we had the jalapeño rollenios, which were so excellent we ordered another 2 rounds. i had the tortilla soup, which was incredible with a bit of heat, but such a great combination of flavours, and textures. then i had a chicken taco, which was simple, authentic, and just delicious. my dining companions had enchiladas, and a pulled pork torta (sandwich) all of which the thoroughly enjoyed. the place was humming, andservicewas friendly and efficient, we were not made to feel hurried, it was just a great experience. will definitely be back... still dreaming about those rollenios...

i simply love the food at viva mexico. it isn't a flash restaurant with tiptopservicebut a lovely little whole in the wall that deserves a visit. it is a great place to hide from the cafe crowd on cuba street and get a fab feed.
for starters this visit we shared the stuffed jalapeños, they were delicious and gone in seconds.
often when i eat out i head towards the vegetarian option for mains, never here though. i love the salsa verde and was told by staff a while back that beef is what goes best with it, so that is what i ordered. this visit i had the huarache , why have i never thought of serving food like this? it was great but huge. i didn't quite finish the whole plate. mr muffin enjoyed his food too.
this place is well worth a visit and defiantly on our 'must use the entertainment book voucher' list.

friendlyserviceand a low key warm atmosphere, however i found the food to be either very dry or quite bland. i had the tacos and apparently the enchiladas are generally better so maybe give those a go. the bathrooms weren't particularly clean and were out of toilet paper - and after waiting ten mins in the cold outside for them to find the key that was somewhat annoying.

good flavors, spicy salsa. chips and salsa are $15 which is over priced for the 15 chips you actually get. food came out fast andservicewas polite.

we have visited twice (and both times on a public holiday) so not sure if it makes a difference but compared to the other two mexican places in welly this is by far the worst. theserviceis average, the prices expensive for what you get and usually the music is so loud you can't hear yourself talk. disappointing as everyone loves mexico food!

went here for date night tonight. i am more than a fan of mexican food and a sucker for authentic cuisine, this food totally met the bar.  theservicewas excellent, the guys are honest and friendly. ignore the other reviews that critique the portion size and price- the portions are very generous, the hot sauce didn't f**k around (which we loved), and the price was fair.

i will be back after my long runs to eat three breakfast.

oh the mole!
this was a great find tucked away at the bottom of left bank off cuba.
plates aren't pretty, and there is no need to put a garnish on every individual thing on the plate... but who cares! this is some lovely food. chicken with mole and beef with the green tomatillo sauce. generous servings for cheap money...serviceexceptionale

so theserviceis bad, the menus has unwritten rules, my delicious sounding mexican coffee never came and they don't do takeaway coffee even to make up for never bringing you one in the first place..

but the food was tasty and came out in a timely manner.. sadly i'll probably go back again despite theservicecause i like mexican food and this wasn't half bad considering the distance wellington is from mexico..

my first visit to viva mexico was underwhelming to say the least. to say the most, the restaurant's good food is completely overshadowed by the ineptitude of their service.

first we were greeted and sat and left with menus. being a completely empty restaurant, it was a bit surprising to wait ten minutes to have our order taken.

upon ordering, our server started listing rules that don't appear anywhere on the menu... no you cannot have two different meats in the three enchiladas. choice of meat means one meat for all three enchiladas. one meat, one sauce, three enchiladas.

ok, a rule is a rule even when it doesn't make any sense, but then it got worse. after telling me no to the enchiladas, the server said i could mix meats in the three taco plate (because, you know, that makes sense?!). so i switch gears and order the tacos because i want to try both the pork and the chicken. oh not those tacos!!! as it turns out, you can have different meat choices on the tacos either. so why did the server say i could? he flips back a page and says "these tacos" -- so the grand summary for those who skipped ahead, there is one plate on the menu for which you are allowed to have different meats despite their being many similar plates on the menu. at it's best, it is restaurant bureaucracy -- a type of red tape that you're never meant to understand. at it's worst, it is poor planning by the kitchen staff and poor communication by the serving staff.

it was enough that i almost put down the menu and headed to a different mexican restaurant down the street. [note to viva mexico: you aren't the only mexican restaurant in town. why are you empty at lunch on tuesday? because of experiences like mine.]

but we aren't done yet!!!

so, after the ridiculousness of the enchiladas and tacos, i decide to flip back to breakfast and order heuvos rancheros, something with no meat at all.

the food was, despite theserviceissues, quite good. authentic and loaded with flavor and some spice.

however, while eating the food... a splash of water comes flying over the wall from the kitchen. yes, i got rained on while eating my food. who knows if this is dirty dish water or something from food prep. it did not help to brighten my mood. and whoever sent the water flying certainly didn't come to check on whether they hit their target.

add to that a mexican coffee that was ordered but not received, and you've got a recipient for some of the worstservicein wellington.

if you go for the food and enjoy terrible service, you'll love viva mexico.

not overly impressed with this one i must say. really felt like something fresh & spicy but it was quite the opposite in fact. i don't think that there was much importance with my visit asservicewas not flash. it may have been because i dined here by myself witch sometime happens when you travel a lot.

do not eat here if you want any kind of decent food. i don't know who is writing all these good reviews but they have obviously never tried real mexican food.

theservicei experienced was shocking, i ordered a mild sauce (yeah right) and was unpleasantly surprised to discover that i couldn't even eat my meal because it was so spicy. when i said this to our waiter and asked for something else he first argued with me and then said if i wanted something else i would have to pay for both meals. i was hungry so ordered a quesadilla, which was basically a chicken toastie with cheese and sour cream on the side. very dissatisfied and would not eat here again.

(nb they did not end up charging me for both meals, not sure why possibly because they feared a bad review!)
