i dined here on my own recently when the weather and traffic leaving the city were horrible. it was a tuesday early evening and theplacewas full. there are probably only 6 or 7 tables in this small establishment - which gives it an intimate feel. the two gentlemen working were both mexican, and very friendly. i ordered several dishes - so as to make it worth their while - since i was alone and occupying a valuable table. there wass no wine sold here so i settled for a margarita. it was good and traditional. all of the food was as well. a bit pricy - like all mexican places in nz - but definitely well worth it. i had tacos, quesadillas, and stuffed jalepenos. nice fresh food cooked onsite. i will be back.

go here often and always find theplaceto be great. food is always nice and the guys who work there are always friendly.

theplaceis low-key but has some character and interesting decor.

have taken a number of other people along and no one has had a bad thing to say about the place.

no betterplacein nz for tacos!! for your $ you get a good portion. i love that it is made by mexicans! the taste and flavours are authentic much like the restraunt itself x

not sure you can go wrong with viva mexico awesome people and some of the best food in town, when we go away it's the firstplacewe want to come back and eat at. best brownie in town but always hard to fit in...

i am appalled by arthur's review it sounds as though he was in a bad mood before he even walked through the door. viva mexico is an excellentplaceto relax and eat some authentic mexican food. the chefs are obviously native to mexico which adds to the already fantastic experience. the pulled pork with anchote was to die for and i order on the recommendation of the waiter.
the best cheap eat in town hands down!!!!!!! we have been 5 times and will not hesitate to return! great work guys.

went last night for the first time. there was a wait for about 5 minutes for a table, and we were initially seated outside. a hot water bottle was brought out for the child in our group. we ordered, then were offered a table inside when one came up.
we had the jalapeño rollenios, which were so excellent we ordered another 2 rounds. i had the tortilla soup, which was incredible with a bit of heat, but such a great combination of flavours, and textures. then i had a chicken taco, which was simple, authentic, and just delicious. my dining companions had enchiladas, and a pulled pork torta (sandwich) all of which the thoroughly enjoyed. theplacewas humming, and service was friendly and efficient, we were not made to feel hurried, it was just a great experience. will definitely be back... still dreaming about those rollenios...

i simply love the food at viva mexico. it isn't a flash restaurant with tiptop service but a lovely little whole in the wall that deserves a visit. it is a greatplaceto hide from the cafe crowd on cuba street and get a fab feed.
for starters this visit we shared the stuffed jalapeños, they were delicious and gone in seconds.
often when i eat out i head towards the vegetarian option for mains, never here though. i love the salsa verde and was told by staff a while back that beef is what goes best with it, so that is what i ordered. this visit i had the huarache , why have i never thought of serving food like this? it was great but huge. i didn't quite finish the whole plate. mr muffin enjoyed his food too.
thisplaceis well worth a visit and defiantly on our 'must use the entertainment book voucher' list.

i had heard about viva mexico from a few friends and finally tried it out a few days ago. absolutely loved the atmosphere, the food and the service was impeccable. theplacewas packed the whole time i was there and you can see why by how good the food is. i will definitely be back soon!

we went to the petone outlet (no option on zomato to leave a review for that outlet), and we were so happy we went!!!! the food is just beautiful!! we got the beef and lamb tacos and they tasted so good - loved the guacamole! we also go the churos to share and wish we got the bigger plate of them as we didn’t want them to finish - the caramel sauce that goes with them is so yummy, and it was fantastic they weren’t covered in chocolate (and this is coming from someone who loves chocolate). will happily recommend thisplaceas it’s worth your money!!

this used to be our favourite mexicanplacebut its completely ruined now. the menu has changed completely and not for the better. they only serve tacos as mains. the chilaquiles were awful, tasted like it was canned chicken, no flavour. the tacos were tiny! like an entree size for the price of a main! again, there was no flavour except the vinegary green salsa. absolutely the worst mexicanplacenow. =(

it's a quite smallplacewith i think just 4 or 5 tables. but, the food is tasty and the price is lower than some other places. perfect for friday night since the night market is just outside the restaurant.

came here with a friend after she recommended it. it was a nice little getaway from the main st. it was great to see just how well thoughtfully and colourfully decorated the wholeplacewas! the food we ordered was the soup and enchiladas which were filling and tasty. i can say whether its authentic mexican as i've never been to mexico. however the prices are a bit steep for what they are but lovers of mexican food should check it out regardless!

cool littleplacedown the alley! unfortunately i ordered the chicken tacos which were completely bland, i had to ask for more salsa just to try and add something too it as it was also pretty dry. however my bf had the vegetarian burrito and said that it was tasty!

best meal i've had in a long time. as a vegetarian, it can be difficult finding yummy authentic food to eat, i would highly recommend thisplaceif you are vegetarian (or not as well). the atmosphere is cool, the staff were friendly. the food came out quickly, and the music was nice. will definitely come back here. the only thing i can fault, is that because the restaurant is small, it can be difficult to get a table. however, this adds to the mexican street food atmosphere.

had read good reviews about thisplaceand went with good expectations! we were quite happy to note that the menu was just right and what we ordered was superb. we ordered a pitcher of frozen maragarita, jalapenos relenos, chilaquiles, quesidillas and enchiladas. the portions were just right and the quality excellent, especially the special sauce served with the food. that was something out of the ordinary. the taste was perfect in spice. highly recommended.
