a very pleasant find! loved the food, the service and the fun wall decorations. the brisket, pulled pork and red back fondue was so good! the fresh cut fries were a welcome addition! also loved the 3 different sauce flavors so you can tastebbqsauce from around the country

the smoke doesn't lie. who'd have thought good barbecue could be found in rockville, md!? i would have bet against it, but i stopped in ubq to see for myself. it has a very unremarkable location in a small strip center and at first appears to be the kind of place serving up average-at-bestbbqfor naive city folk. but as i walked through the door, the familiar smell of smoke hit and i began to think this might be a worthwhile excursion. i ordered the 2-meat combo plate and put the sausage and beef brisket to the test. to my surprise, the beef brisket had a small smoke ring and a bit of a black pepper crust on the outside. now the smoke ring could certainly could have been bigger, but having a smoke ring at all in this part of the country is a rare thing. the brisket was not stringy and was easily picked apart by pulling on both ends, i.e., it had no accordion texture. it had a detectable smoky flavor, especially the pieces with a bit more bark on the outside. the meat i was served came from the lean end of the brisket so it was a little dry, but that's to be expected. i bet meat from the fat end would have been fantastic and if i have the chance to go again, i will ask for cuts from the fat end. the brisket i received was good enough to eat without sauce though, and that's the true test! i did dunk the last few pieces in sauce though just to try them out. the yella sauce was good and flavorful and the corey joe sauce was hot and tasty. the sausage was ok but was not outstanding. i think they know this too, because it was served with sauce already poured on whereas the brisket was served clean. my plate came with very generous sides of beans and cornbread. the beans were seasoned with cumin instead of truckloads of sugar like so many places. the cornbread also seemed to flavored with a reasonable amount of sugar, being moist and just slightly sweet and containing real pieces of corn throughout. to drink, i had draft root beer. i've never seen root beer served this way before, but it came out of a tap on the front counter next to the soda machine and it was good 'n' cold. i didn't get a chance to return to ubq during the rest of my stay in rockville, but i was reminded of the experience the rest of the week as my coat continued to give off the scent of the smoke that saturates ubq. it's good to know thatbbqcan be done well even in the middle of strip mall america!

as good as texas. a trip to the burbs for a work-related event left me looking for a place to nosh. my co-worker (and native guide) suggested urban barbeque. i am thankful she did. as someone from new mexico who spent formative food years in texas, i felt transported back to my favoritebbqspot in houston, goode company. at urban - i selected a two meat sampler and got beef sausage and brisket. it was a healthy portion of meat - well smoked and tender and the sauce. my guest chose the pulled pork sandwich - again, a healthy serving on a large bun. the crowning glory to any barbeque is the sauce, and i was all about the tomato-based sauce. at urban it was rich with a little hot spice to complement the smoked meat. there was a mild sauce that just wasn't my style. the sides we choose of cole slaw- usually a forgettable side but here tangy and crisp - and potato salad that challenged by mothers for texture and taste were worth a trip on their own. their cornbread was studded with kernels of grilled corn and wa so rich it didn't need any butter. the other thing that impressed me was how hard all the staff worked and how clean the place was. urbanbbqis worth the trip - and i am looking forward to sampling the fare at their other locations.

simply the bestbbqin the dc area. they do everything well but the pulled pork is really the best. it is tangy and sweet with just a hit of their rub which gives it bite. the sides are spectacular. i would litterally go just for the beans which are smoky and sweet with a hint of cumin. top it iffwith cold shiner and you are pretty sure you are in heaven or at least the next best thing to lockhart, texas.

shiner bock and smoked meat....mmmm.... i am by no means abbqexpert, in fact i'm not even abbqfan. you won't catch me arguing bark, smoke or sauce. however, you will find me smiling after eating at urban bbq. i returned today and i still taste smoke hours later. so many things to like: the juicy pulled pork and chicken are delicious and i love the homemade hot sauce, also many great things for non-bbq fans however, a tiny seating area so go off hours or carry-out

two other suggestions: go with a group so you can enjoy the great apps like "soul rolls" with "redneck fondue" and skip the sandwiches (go with the platters) because just when you really start to enjoy the pork, chicken or beef it's gone.

ribs to die for!. by far, the best ribs i have found in the rockville, gaithersburg, germantown area!! a little pricy, $20 for a full rack, but if you love really good ribs, well worth the price. you'll know as you recline back after wolfing down some, patting your belly, saying, "damn good"! (leaving thebbqsauce around your mouth)
