3/18/2017 - came back home to visit my dad and we all went to uncle mick's for dinner. working in lexington, ky, there are a couple of really good cajun joints (gumbo ya ya & bourbon and toulouse) which i can compare with mick's.

first, let's sayprattvilleneeds a cajun restaurant. second, i'm not a big seafood eater but my wife is (she's from mobile). but, i'm game for most new adventures.

here's how i see it - mick seems to be a genuine article (even though he was born right in montgomery) and spent 17 years cooking with another person who taught him how to cook cajun. he's got it down. the shrimp à la crème is unbelievably good - and i'm not a fan of shrimp. the crawfish étouffée over dirty rice is also very good. the corn maque choux and cucumber salad round out the sides.

some suggestions - the garlic bread needs a kick. the two lexington restaurants add a little old bay or cajun spice in their butter which is dowsed on the garlic bread. it's amazing. also, they fill a large plate full of rice and add the entree choices (the same or a split) over rice (no sides). i'd think adding this choice in the place of the sides would be a good idea.

overall, good place. will come back when we visit prattville.

can't get enough uncle mick's. located in downtownprattvillethis place is a real cajun treat and find. while we live mere blocks from uncle mick's i assure you we never miss a chance to drop in an enjoy a great meal. the hospitality is authentic and just down right feel good. it has become fun for us to hear others who have traveled from states away brag on his food while visiting because we get to feel lucky living just blocks away. church choir. visited uncle mick's with my church choir. the serving line is a little on the "fast food, burger doodle" side of things, but the line allowed thirty folks to be individually served in an efficient manner. the food was wonderful! some of our group were skeptical of cajun food. the group left with a favorable impression and the majority said they would return (some folks are stuck on meat and potatoes and don't appreciate anything new). i certainly will return when passing throughprattvilleand i might even make a special trip just to eat at uncle mick's. give them a try!

disappointing - i would not take my cajun friends here. my husband and i went to uncle mick's for the first and last time. we are both native orleanians and i spent four years living in cajun country in lafayette, la. we both know what is and isn't cajun or creole food. and make no mistake the two are not the same. we are always looking for a taste of home in the montgomery area. we seldom find it.

as a native orleanian, what passed for seafood gumbo was a major disappointment. gumbo needs to be thick and dark and filled with large shrimp and crab legs and okra. this was a thin soup with miniscule shrimp and no crab or okra. either file or okra are necessary to make gumbo thick. and i wonder did the cook start with a dark roux? the taste was okay, but not the rich dark flavor of an authentic gumbo.

the crab au gratin was bread and cheese. i could not find one sliver of crab. crab au gratin should not include bread. crab au gratin should contain crab meat, butter, celery, green onions, parsley, cream of mushroom soup, american cheese and vermouth or white wine. i ate the "bready" stuff hoping at least for a taste of crab, but was again disappointed. i left the cheese behind as there was way too much of it.

the "french-like" bread was soggy. oh, dear, french bread needs to be crisp and hot so that it crumbles when you bite into it.

my husband had crawfish etouffee which was passable, but not authentic. he also had a shrimp dish that had decent sized shrimp in it, but lacked the flavor used in southwest louisiana.

on to dessert -- the bread pudding with whiskey was pretty good -- probably the best thing on the menu and pretty close to authentic.the caramel cake was also good.

the person behind me in the line said to me, "you won't be disappointed no matter what you get." sadly, i was disappointed. i felt full when i left, but not satisfied.

the owners and server were lovely gentlemen and i admire them for trying. and they seemed busy so i guess the localprattvillefolks are happy with the food.

fantastic!. having just moved to east montgomery, we decided to drive to pratville to try uncle mick's for 2 reasons: 1. we seriously love cajun/creole food (and this is the only place in the area), and 2. the reviews here on urban spoon were outstanding. thanks to all of the other reviewers who helped us find our new favorite restaurant. the food is amazing - authentic cajun/creole with just the right amount of spice. the owner - yes...there is an uncle mick...is incredibly friendly and loves to show off his food. he welcomes anyone to sample before ordering. everything we tried and ordered was incredible. i had the crawfish etouffee (most entrees come over rice) with black eyed peas and deviled eggs as sides. my husband had the chicken and sausage piquante with maque choux and green beans. we split a piece of homemade caramel cake for dessert, although i'm not sure where we found room. total cost for 2 plates (1 entree and 2 sides per plate), 2 teas, and cake was $24 and change. although one reviewer thought this was pricey, having just moved from the washington d.c. area after a quick stint in central florida, we found this incredibly reasonable given the quality and portion size. we will be making the half hour drive toprattvilleoften just for uncle mick's!
fyi: if you're unfamiliar with this type of food, uncle mick's website (link above) has a great tutorial page with pronounciations and ingredient information.
