for years we’ve been coming to tokyo cafe. so often that the employees knew my teenage daughter since she was a toddler. after her dance recital last night we decided to stop by for a fun, celebratory dinner. needless to say we had quite the opposite experience.

ourhibachichef was blatantly rude to us. i’m also assuming he’s the owner because he’d always been present near the host stand during every one of our previous visits.

when he verified our order i told him that my daughter had ordered something different than what he had down. he gave us this horrible look that made me want to crawl back into my shell and then stormed off to the kitchen to grab the alternate ingredient.

he did not put on ahibachishow. he just merely cooked the food which, by the way, was very bland so i asked for some sauce. he gave me that look again, poured the sauce and slammed it in front of me. the two customers next to us also asked for extra sauce in which he replied “no problem, one moment.”

our waitress was not very attentive, but since thehibachichef was so rude we almost didn’t care.

once our food was finished cooking we boxed our food in a hurry and left. when we got in the car my daughter brought up the chef’s attitude and asked me why i did not do something about it. i told her i was just trying to make sure we had a nice, fun dinner together. she replied that he already had ruined that for her.

we will not be returning to tokyo cafe.

only been a couple of times so far and have not tried thehibachiyet. so far a solid a-ok with hopes for more to come.

wednesday night dinner with the boys and not many folks around at 8 or so. a family athibachiand a couple in the bar area for sushi.

big pluses are ramune is in the house and three styles of japanese beer. they have cocktails but i get the feeling they donor focus on it here as much.

another big plus is they are one of a few with the grilled whole squid on sizzling platter but it is more costly here than most at $10. most of the time i get it for $7 or $8....that is usually out of town since not many carry it locally.

tempura app was hot and tasty with batter thicker than the light batter at ichiban. not my fave but it will do.

sushi is serviceable and service was attentive. tofu age was a new experience and tasty with a large portion for $4.

next time we want to try thehibachiso stay tuned.

atmosphere is middle of the road here too which is squarely where i place them overall for now.

great - no compliants!. i tried this place (upon the recommendation of my son & daughter-in-law) despite the bad reviews i'd seen. we (a party of three) went on a sunday for lunch, we arrived about 11:30 am & was seated immediately. we only had to wait for about 15 minutes for the chef to come to our table. i was very happy with the place! the sushi was great & tasted fresh. thehibachiwas excellent, the chef did a great job & our waiter was outstanding. i was very pleased with the amount of food we got for the money. i'm not sure where all the bad reviews are coming from, but we were extremely pleased.

hibachi deliciousness. went there for the hibachi. we had the shrimp, steak and chicken. definitely kind of expensive but typical for hibachi. considering how much food was served definitely worth the price. the rice is justhibachirice, but the noodles are really good. definitely some of the better yellow sauce i've had at hibachi. overall we were really satisfied with the meal and will be going back for dinner.

hibachi!! simply amazing. i was very pleased with this place. we had the steak, chicken, shrimp and scallopshibachiand it was all great. the chicken was the most tender chicken i have ever eaten. the steak was also some of the best i have had anywhere.

the fried rice and lo mein noodles were outstanding as well. the salad and soup were also perfect and refreshing. i could not have been happier with the overall experience and the food! i will be back for sure.

on par. you won't find a better sushi andhibachirestaurant in baton rouge but you will be pleased that tokyo can actually service customers with a large sushi bar and ample grill tables. i suggest the dynamite roll, but everything i've had on multiple visits has been fresh and flavorful.
