great atmosphere, good food- nice to have in the neighborhod. my husband and i just recently moved into a new condo in south granville and now have the pleasure of discovering the neighborhood's hidden gems.
after finishing our unpacking late last night, we needed a quick bite so we headed just down the street to the marquis. when we arrived at 10:30, the place was pretty busy but fortunately for us (and our hungry bellies!), there was no trouble finding a table. i was immediately drawn to the relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere.
from a rather small wine selection, i chose a pinot gris (gray monk from bc) while my husband had a beer. as for food, my husband and i shared a plate of the tuna bites from the small plate section to start. these came tossed in a sweet chili dressing, with a side of wasabi aioli that really balances the sweetness of the chili sauce well. unfortunately, the tuna was severely overcooked (no pink at all), clearly a big no-no with tuna. certainly not the "mid-rare" that the menu said they would be.
i also ordered the beet and goat cheese salad which came nicely presented, with a generous portion of almond-crusted goat cheese in the middle. while simple, it was well executed. my husband had the marguerita pizza, commenting that he was impressed by the quality of the crust and the freshness of the toppings (certainly no nicli antica but very good for a pub!).
so final thoughts on the marquis- i am pleased to have it in my new neighborhood and can see my husband and i spending a few quiet friday nights there for a drink and a snack.
stay tuned for more on our new culinary discoveries in our new neighborhood of south granville!
