the place markets it selfs as a wine bar which is pretty disappointing judging from the poor and very overpriced selection they offer. waitresses are dressed like they are going camping and don't really pay much attention to you. however the food is not bad at all - ok place for a sandwich and a glass of water

service:  server nice server but can't say much as we only came for drinks. it felt like they took awhile to bring it though. atmosphere: felt very old world, new york, subway sort of feel. ages ranged from 25-70, very diverse crowd. . bottom line: we were waiting for our show to start so we headed here for a couple of drinks before heading over. this place looking so fancy, it only felt right to order a cocktail of some sort. i have to say, i wasn't a huge fan of my old fashioned, i've had better at..the keg. but the overall experience was alright, no real complaints.

go for the cheap drinks not for the food.. the title basically says it all. with highballs always costing $3.25 and a good ambiance this place is great for a few cheap drinks with friends. the food is nothing special but acceptable for munching. that said you're better off sticking with standard things like fries if you want to get something that tastes good.

a hole in the wall, or rather a door in the block. it caught my attention with a sign post of cheap drinks specials, a knee level sandwich board, and a rotating strobe light in red led. inside, a narrow space with a row of tables and booths on right and swivelling hightop seats by the bar on the left. the mirror at the back of the restaurant gives the illusion that the place is larger than it really is. no decorations, no conversation starters. just seats and shelves for bottles and drinks. be warned everyone here knows the food isn’t good, you come for the cheap drinks and the $3.50 highballs. “white strawberry”. fruli and 1664 blanc. surprised that i could taste this much strawberry. stanley park beer on tap. “potato and cheddar perogies”. topped with spicy caramelized onions and green onions, and topped with sour cream. you can also add chorizo into the mix at cost. they were only slightly better than the frozen perogies you are too lazy to make yourself at home. though it all hones

great drinks, great eats!. i moved into the neighbourhood a few months ago, and the marquis has been my standard hangout. the staff are lovely, really attentive and knowledgable. they just changed their menu and the food has hugely improved. gotta try the mini yorkshire puddings! it's a great spot to hang out, whether for after work drinks, dinner, or something late (they're open until 2!). i definitely would recommend this place to anyone in the area.

the first and only time i tried this place with a friend was the worst experience ever!! firstly, the place seemed pretty busy with hardly enough servers to acknowledge your presence or seat you once you enter. my friend and i ended up seating ourselves and waiting some 15 minutes or so later just to get a menu!! when we finally managed to order something (in this case drinks only as it seemed impossible to wait again for anything else), we had to wait another 20 minutes for our order. to top it off, when the beers came the server ended up accidentally pouring my entire beer on the table which subsequently went all on my lap and was completely soaked!! she came back with a towel to help clean up mess and also for me to dry my clothes. she did profusely apologise for what happened of course but then offered to split my friend's drink between me and my friend and not charge the one she spilt on me?!! was sooo embarrassed and just completely taken aback (not to mention i could tell the server was clearly upset herself), that my friend and i ended up leaving without paying for anything!! such a huge disappointment to what could have been an overall great night! will not be going back!!

time warp?!. tried for the first time recently, reminded me of the "lounges" that my friends i and used to sneak into when we were in high school (70's!)
food was a bit expensive and not too exciting (flavour please!) but the beer was cold and a good price...
probably won't go back, seemed "tired" and very dated, food "uninspired"...

had a bite to eat after seeing a play. my friend & i shared the salmon. not only was it tasty but the yam fries we ordered were better than expected as well. nice touch that they brought the one order out on 2 plates when we said we were sharing. : )

you know those hidden gems that i've been writing about lately? i don't know how but i always happen to come upon those. the marquis in south granville (between 10th and 11th avenue on granville) is one of those hidden gems. i think it's because it's kind of hidden, and people don't seem to realize it's there. but yes, it is actually classy as it portrays itself (although i am not sure why they added the tv screens) quite frankly, i wouldn't have added the tv screens, i like the room nice as it is without them! my good friend jana and i arrived there right after the live at squamish launch party at the commodore (it was a tad too noisy for me, thus we decided to head to the marquis, a place i had been wanting to check for years. yes, you heard me. in my decade(s) of living in vancouver, i had not checked the marquis. i am glad we did, not only because we had a fantastic time, but because i got the assistant manager (jenna) to create a sweet drink on my name (the hummingbird, so if you

eat elsewhere. wow wow wow. will not be eating here again.

drinks took forever to come because they couldn't find the pellegrino. i guess they don't get a lot of non-drinkers in there.

appetizers were brought out at the same time as entreés. a little awkward.

waitress didn't bother telling us that anything with a tomato base was not available that night as they'd run out of tomatoes. we only found out when the first person tried to order the vegan chili. this was 7pm on a saturday night. out of tomatoes already?! where's plan b? there's a market right up the street for pity's sake.

the little puffy moist-centered balls of dough tasted like anything but gnocchi. the lobster was okay but the sauce was nothing to write home about.

the ribs were described as tasting like they'd been in the fridge for a few days, and the borscht was too salty - this last comment coming from a friend who tends to salt her food regularly too.

the waitress, to her credit, attempted to split the bill up for each of us but botched that so badly that it took about 15 minutes to square it all away properly.

sorry guys. the ambiance was nice but other than that not a lot of positive things to say.

my first time there will be my last time there.

nice atmosphere... but the food and drink needs a lot of work. linguine and meatballs were really dry. tasted pre-made and microwaved. kinda a shameful italian dish - that that's what you get for just $13 dollars. my girlfriends complained that their mojotos were "just okay". had to keep prompting the waitresses for service and by the end of the service i was getting up to find my own pitchers of water to serve the table. won't go back.

great atmosphere, good food- nice to have in the neighborhod. my husband and i just recently moved into a new condo in south granville and now have the pleasure of discovering the neighborhood's hidden gems.
after finishing our unpacking late last night, we needed a quick bite so we headed just down the street to the marquis. when we arrived at 10:30, the place was pretty busy but fortunately for us (and our hungry bellies!), there was no trouble finding a table. i was immediately drawn to the relaxed yet sophisticated atmosphere.
from a rather small wine selection, i chose a pinot gris (gray monk from bc) while my husband had a beer. as for food, my husband and i shared a plate of the tuna bites from the small plate section to start. these came tossed in a sweet chili dressing, with a side of wasabi aioli that really balances the sweetness of the chili sauce well. unfortunately, the tuna was severely overcooked (no pink at all), clearly a big no-no with tuna. certainly not the "mid-rare" that the menu said they would be.
i also ordered the beet and goat cheese salad which came nicely presented, with a generous portion of almond-crusted goat cheese in the middle. while simple, it was well executed. my husband had the marguerita pizza, commenting that he was impressed by the quality of the crust and the freshness of the toppings (certainly no nicli antica but very good for a pub!).
so final thoughts on the marquis- i am pleased to have it in my new neighborhood and can see my husband and i spending a few quiet friday nights there for a drink and a snack.
stay tuned for more on our new culinary discoveries in our new neighborhood of south granville!
