7/11/15: very highly recommended.
sunday brunch - 10am and larder is almost full. the open fire is going but so warm inside we decide to sit outside.
themenuwas easily decided upon - a trim cap, flat white, croque madame and my order kidneys and bacon - asking whether the sourdough toast could be replaced by hash browns - no problem at all. i (we once walked out of a cbd restaurant when the cook refused to alter the dish, replacing one sort of mash with another that was also on themenu- because it would "destroy the integrity of the dish" - yeah right! - given that few dishes in restaurants have good integrity to start with this seems overly precious).
i think it could be that i've eaten/drunk in too many b grade joints recently, but when the kidneys and bacon with hash browns were delivered to my upper gi tract, i was taken aback - "i've been missing real food" i said "and now i remember what it's like."
perfectly cooked lamb's kidneys with bacon sitting atop four fat and tender hash browns. all coated in a creamy, brown-green speckled, herb-salty blanket that ran gently through the whole. each mouthful was perfect pleasure. honestly it was so good it surprised me.
the croque madame was excellent - just as it should be, and the coffee was excellent both in preparation and taste. the larder made for a lovely morning.
very highly recommended.
