thisplacedoes some of the best steak i’ve tasted. the steak tasting platter is well worth the money. service is lovely, cocktails are great. interior is outdated, but let that slide considering everything else.

delicious food, great environment, and most of the time great service. the suckling pig is tender and delicious, steak cooked to perfection and tender, miso hollandaise is sooo yummy and the usual sides we get are always amazing. grandmas carrots, potato gratin and the onion rings (actual circles of onion in a puffy crispy batter)
always look forward to dinner here and my mouth waters just thinking about it.
definitely aplaceto try at least once in your life!

i will remember it being very dark and noisy. the prior the result of black paint and decor with dimly lit cravasses for tables along the wall. a greatplaceto wine and dine if you were say sleeping with your boss ladies! so dim that it was difficult to make out the faces of waiting staff. we were a party of 4 at table 35.
as for the noise its clearly popular so maybe not such a good idea for discreet redezvous. why i didnt run into anyone i knew the venue is similar to another federal st outlet the depot in being a cosy table layout and crowded. staffing levels are good with many serving staff. service was good only one minor fault when the entrées were served tge waiter served twi plates crossing over two of tge guests placing instead of going to tge opposing side. he then called out the dishes were "those are to share" as he walked away from the table while i glared at him. odd given they were not to share and we were not in the depot! ! otherwise all the mains were served by 3 waiters to the 4 settings very professionally and timed to perfection. this may have been important to maintain the steak after resting as those steaks were impressive. best delivery of mains al la carte but disappointing entree serving. 3/5.
my entree was the ox tongue. i didnt regret ordering it but is an acquired taste. large piece cut length wise. scampi sashimi was very good also with a light chilli. 4/5
for mains, three of our party had eye fillet from the savannah pastured fed angus. cooked to perfection. hope chef at annebelles st heliers reads my review. clearly slow pan fried nothing burnt. the fourth member of the party had a sirloin. this came attached on bone and looked superb. 5/5 note steak from the butchers block are priced solely for the steak and nothing else. so served on a plate there is no veges or garnish. further cost of about $14 for sides each. so its quite expensive all up when the steak was $45-$50 to start.
the sides were brocollini with walnuts and roasted pumpkin with a cream paste. both were very good but pricey. 4/5
dessert sadly no brulee that night. settled on a honey roasted figs with ice cream. a good dessert if you didnt want something too sweet. 4/5.
in summary flashyplaceto be seen in (lighting permitting) but for refined steaks excelkent choices better than say with tonys outlets where it's less noisy and to me i'd find more relaxing. price is high end $100 pp plus wine $100-$200 a bottle.

we had booked thisplacebefore hand cause they would be packed for mothers day, arrived hearing that our booking was not there. ordered drinks, did not receive the drinks we ordered. serve was good but the fact they forgot two things had let me down, also every table had salt & pepper plus hot sauce, except for ours which felt very unwelcoming.

food was bland needed more seasoning. but the sauce was amazing for the steak. overall an okay experience, theplacehad a very good ambiance, but kind of a let down, food wise compared with the price. lets just say with the ingredients they had they could of done better.

i must say this is the first time i've given somewhere a 5.0
from the moment we were taken to the table, to where we got introduced to the menu and the moment we stepped out it was so perfect.
first of all, the waitor who took care of us was so friendly and informative. couldn't have done better.
we got the study of beef, parmasen slaw, duck fat chips as sides.
the wagyu dry aged was incredible. such strong exquiste flavours
the slow cooked wagyu cheek was heavenly...melted as we cut into it.
study of beef was $150 but it's dependent on the cut of the day i think. so worth it.
if you're looking for aplaceto dine on a special day + with some good protein, no doubts you must go here.
i also requested a suprise cake be done and even that was perfect
thank you for making our night wonderful
we will be back :)

i come here every so often but especially when i want an amazing steak. the price is definitely higher than your regular bistro, but its absolutely worth it! the ambience of the restaurant is lovely, and definitely a niceplaceto come on a date night!

if you ever have the money to splurge on a steak, the grill has an amazing a5 kagoshima beef, which literally changed my perspective on steaks. (keep in mind the steak is a lot smaller than your usual steak).
for an entree my go-to would be the beef tartare! its made in front of you, and you can also ask to customise how much of each ingredient you want!
however, if you have a big appetite and you have no idea what you want to order, i highly recommend getting the "study of beef", it differs according to the chef's preference, but ultimately they get to choose what you get and the sauces that go with the 3 steaks.
the duck fat chips are a 10/10, highly recommend if you're looking for some extra sides!

food: 5/5

for "fine dining" thisplacereally needs to up its game. the service is bistro grade at best and the prices are way over the top. waiters reaching over you to clear the table and taking drinks away before you have finished is not impressive and not what you should accept when paying prices this high. i booked it for my partners birthday as a last dinner out as she is heavily pregnant. they promised some kind of complementary desert over the phone but forgot on the night. my food was nice. pork belly starter $28, nice but small. carpet bag steak main was really nice but it should be for a $58 steak. partners meals were both disappointing- crab cocktail $32 and bland! and snapper main 5/10. all in all thisplacewas a let down and definitely not worth the money. i wouldn't return

oh i love the food here. particularly indian/mughlai. their butter chicken, tandoori chicken, rolls, tikkas everything is really tasty. and a rare goodplacewhich serves roomali roti which coincidentally is my favourite. i've had their chinese as well, and it was pretty good, not as good as the mughlai, but well done. keep it up guys.

went here for my boyfriend’s 29th birthday as he loves steaks. theplacelooked fancy enough. it was next to the grand hotel. fancy is an understatement. it was a bit too dark though but maybe that’s a thing for places like this. we were seated at an odd location though. not much of a complaint. the waiter acted slightly odd, like his head wasn’t in the game (work). but not a big deal as well. he’s doing his job.

we ordered the study of beef, mac and cheese, fries and the new york cheesecake... suffice to say, we’re just inches away from having a heart attack (joking obviously).

i’ve never really been a fan of steaks. or maybe i just don’t order the right cut or ask for the right way to cook it that suits my palette. but tasting the japanese a5 wagyu... now i understand what they mean by melts in your mouth. it was delish!

the rest of the meats were cooked nicely and tasted good as well. we could not finish it all of course. we’re not big eaters. had to take some home.

mac and cheese and fries were ordinary. nothing spectacular about it.

cheesecake was soooo good, dreamt about it for days. the bf loved everything.

only one major downside: the price. a whopping 234nzd (we’re not rich people... i’m nurse and my partner works in an advertising company as an accounts manager in hamilton). i’m a small eater. the price i ate is worth around 30 bucks max (meat, cheese, cake). he ate majority of the meal. i don’t mind though... expected that much. it was my treat for the special boy. plus he’s only in auckland on the weekends. bae is worth it.

will be back again for sure.

the ambiance of theplacewas lovely. i liked how they displayed their fine meats and seafood for the patrons to view.

the night started well. antipodes water was served. we were given complimentary canapé (fried mushroom, garlic & parmesan twister) which was very tasty and homemade rye bread served with lewis road creamery butter.

i ordered the sunday roast which i thought was value for money. the savannah beef off the bone came with roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, caramelised onions, red wine jus and bearnaise sauce. when it came out i was like wow, the plate also had carrot and a bit of creamed spinach. the meat was tender and cooked medium (prefect for me). i loved everything on the plate except the caramelised onion - it was extremely salty. i could only taste salt.

the smoked mash potato w chicken gravy again was too salty. but i liked the smokyness in it. the confit mushrooms w garlic & thyme was okay but it was cold. my friends ordered the duck fat potatoes which i tried, it was lacking salt.

dessert was great and my favourite course of the evening. the apple tart w vanilla ice cream was amazing. crepe suzette and profiteroles were good too. profiteroles had a generous amount of hazelnut favoured cream.

service was a bit on the down side. the lady who served the table (9 of us) only ever asked if we wanted drinks once. when explaining the specials of the day, most of us couldn’t hear what she was saying, so had her come back to ask questions.

no waiting staff ever asked how the food was and if we needed anything else. the is very strange considering it’s seems to be the norm to check on your customers.

i sound picky but if you’re dining at $50 average for 300gm of meat only type restaurant you would expect everything to be exceptional.

however, i would like to go back and try other seafood dishes. and hopefully things will have improved and refined by then
