when i called and made a booking for a thursday night dinner, my heart warmed when, upon request if babies are acceptable, the friendly response was: "of course".
i have been to thegodfathera few times. we reserve this restaurant for times that we are really in the mood for a good meal, a.k.a a quality piece of meat. in the past, we were never disappointed.
the restaurant was full when we arrived at 19h00. we were allocated a seat at a corner booth, at the bottom of the restaurant, so that there would be "sufficient space for the pram". the location of our table ended up being less than ideal, we were situated right next to a table of about 20, rather loud, guests and waiters that kept bumping the pram on the way past our table.
nonetheless, we did not let these things phase us as we were there for a super yummy meal and that's all that mattered.
for starters, i ordered my regular, beef carpaccio, my husband the crispy potato bites. the carpaccio was thickly sliced and not very tasty, but nothing a good amount of balsamic vinegar and salt couldn't cure. the potato bites were oily and the sauce it was served with rather thick, but it is as described on the menu, and nothing special.
for mains i ordered the chocolate chilli fillet. this is the main reason we went, as i have had this before and it was simply magical. my husband had the surf and turf, which is fillet and tiger prawns with a creamy mustard-y sauce. we both opted for veggies as accompaniment to the meal. both our fillets were of good quality, and quite tasty. according to my husband, the prawns were prepared perfectly, cleaned properly, grilled with just the right amount of spice in order to taste the flavour of the prawns. the mustard-y sauce did not fit with his fillet, was not as appetizing and a bit too thick for his liking.
on the chocolate chilli sauce, i was extremely disappointed. the menu indicates "a touch of chilli", but the hand that added the chilli to the sauce was extremely heavy. perhaps they should ask how hot you want the sauce?
mine was so hot, that after each bite i had to grab for a drink or a bite of something else, just to douse the flames in my throat. i ended up removing my meat from the plate where the sauce was in, and eating it on a side plate so it would not get any further sauce on the meat.
i was so disappointed with this, which was the big reason for our visit. the manager whizzed past and only briefly stopped at the table to find out if all was fine, before i could even open my mouth to ask why so much chilli in the sauce, he was gone.
the service from our waitress was also lacking. she had a super short skirt/shorts, which seriously bordered on the inappropriate for a family restaurant and all her other tables were at the other end of the restaurant. this resulted in the fact that we had to wait a couple of minutes each time we wanted to get her attention to order something.
for dessert, i ordered a creme brulee, which was average. my husband had the waffle and ice cream, which he rated highly. he is a self-proclaimed waffle connoisseur.
drinks-wise, my husband had a glass of wine and in total we had 3 non-alcoholic drinks.
the bill at the end of the meal came in at r 900, including a 10% tip.
the cost of the meal did not justify the overall quality of the food, service and enjoyment of@ the evening.
