the godfather

this is a must do, have to go there, the streaks are delicious cooked to perfection. my husband always has the 750g rump it is cooked perfectly. i've had the fillet and we have tried so much more all good. we have been going there for the last 20 years and it's always good. the staff is so friendly and helpful. nice to see university student been given jobs.

don't be fooled by the rough exterior, just because it's not in a mall or hidden in the bush somewhere doesn't mean that the godfather isn't a legitimate restaurant. one of the centurion and pretorias best steakhouses, if not the best... great wine selection and awesome wine glasses. it's worth the trip to drink out of a glass that's large enough to fit the whole bottle. but the steak and ribs are great, excellent for meat lovers.

maine course: 21 day aged sirloin, cold smoked over ground coffee grilled and topped with vanilla butter

always great service and great food!!!

it was a rainy sunday afternoon and i was wishing for some good food, but didnt feel like going anywhere. only option: mr delivery. since i didnt want to eat junk and wanted something meaty with mash, the ox tail at godfathers was my number 1 choice and boy did they deliver!

rich ox tail with delicious mash and a nice thick gravy to compliment it. while it was by no means cheap (r200), it sure did cure my craving. thing is, the portion size was huge (feeds at least 2 people). to be honest, i would rather have half the meal for r100 and im sure theyd get more orders for it that way. oh well, at least i have loads of left-overs for lunch tomorrow.

don't underestimate this gem. their food portions are huge. the portion size doesn't compensate for the taste is it also holds its own. lighting is a bit gloomy but the focus is on food.

wow wow wow! this place's peanutbuttermud pie is out of this world. think creamy, hot peanutbutter in a delicious pastry with ice cold ice cream! bliss!!! however, the orange juice is very pricey for a glass of r30, half filled with ice. my burger patty was not medium done but overcooked, the gelato was very icey, first time eating gelato and not sure what it must taste like but expected creamy and the i overheard the other waiter giving his customer the option between garlic rolls and rye bread and also making some recommendations.

what a wonderful evening! at first i wasn't to eager to visit the godfather. it honestly didn't sound like the type of place that'll cater for a vegetarian. my boyfriend finally convinced me and i was very pleasantly surprised. the restaurant's decor is very classy and welcoming. the service was friendly and warm. and they have vegetarian options! had haloumi covered in balsamic reduction for a starter. i had a massive vegetarian platter for my main which had an exceptional broccoli quiche and grilled feta cheese salad with veggie skewers. my boyfriend had an apparently fantastic chilli chocolate steak and we shared a chocolate mousse for dessert. we're both mad about the godfather and will definitely visit again soon.

my husband & i went there on a date. this was my second time at the godfather. and i must say wow! i have never had better service at any other restaurant. the way the waiter treated us made us feel like royalty. and wow- talk about value for money. we both ordered spare ribs with hot vegetables. food was ready within 10-15 minutes. i ate 2 ribs and a fifth of my vegetables and took the rest home as a take-away. big portions & great value for money!

granted it’s a steak house, but the effort in the vegetarian meal was very poor. the bun was stale i could cut through it. the guys ordered ribs and a steak. ribs was good. steak, they should have been given the option of the basting. great service. great wine list.

after many years of not going to what was once my favourite centurion restaurant, i decided to visit the godfather at their new venue in midstream estate. they are now at a smaller though much safer venue than the previous one in the centurion cbd.

walking up to the front door i was greeted by 2 gentlemen in the famous (or is it infamous) black shirts and pants and black hats with white bands. this is how i remember the godfather of 20 years ago! for the male patrons - the waitresses still wear short skirts and hotpants.... like it or not, it has become part of their trademark and forms a link with the past of this very successful restaurant.

charmonet was my charming waitress for the evening. she offered me the winelist and i must say it is comprehensive and reasonably priced. i decided beforehand that this would be an old school evening so i decided on a heineken while i had a look at the menu.

some people have called it old fashioned - probably because there are many old favourites still on the menu after 20 years - but i believe there are sufficient variety on offer to please any palate. not a huge menu, but one that has been carefully set up to provide everybody with something that they will enjoy.

i looked at the beef carpaccio starter as they still serve it with balsamic vinegar while many other restaurants serve it with lemon juice with the obligatory olive oil. however, as it was an old school evening i went for the shrimp cocktail (as they say a retro favourite). the sauce was freshly made and definitely not bought in. it bit too much tomato sauce with the mayo, but still really enjoyable and a proper portion.

as a main i had a medium rare 300g rump with mashed potatoes and a monkey gland sauce - very old school. as veggies they had the option of the standard brainless south african options of butternut and....... spinach! or what charmonet recommended, the roast veggies which i decided upon. the steak was prepared to perfection and the mashed potatoes was also very nice. i enjoyed the veggies and both it and the mashed potatoes came in generous portions. any south african restaurant in the steakhouse category must be able to make a good monkey gland sauce and this sauce was the best i had in years. i had a cuppucino to end the meal.

all in all with the tip included the bill was r415, which might sound a bit steep, but for a meal like this i will gladly pay it again. the godfather will definitely see more of me in the near future!

i do however feel that the food is overpriced. the menu is also a bit old fashioned.

if you are looking for a steak dinner, look no further. food is good and i have never, ever had bad service. the team is exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable. a firm favourite and staple in our family.
