thegrindis found on burke street in surry, a little bit towards taylor square from the beresford. an airy spot the café does a good job with its corner location, making the inside feel quite outside. grabbing a seat was not a huge problem as burke street cafes go into chilled mode on sundays. i was quickly greeted with both menu and bottle of water and glass. i followed the order of the guys beside me and got a piccolo latte. the coffee was quick in its appearance an

the factorygrindoffers a turkish spin on classic breakfast dishes!

• ‘big factory’ - bacon, haloumi, cumin tomatoes , sautéed mushrooms , veal sucuk, homemade potato barley hash, toast, two eggs. my partner and i really loved this dish and would recommend it!

•’kofte burger’ - lamb kofte in a charcoal bun with cheese, aioli and chutney with sweet potato chips. i adore the chutney, it’s got a thick texture like tomato pasta sauce and it goes perfectly with the lamb patty. the chips were also cooked perfectly!

my partner also ordered the coffee ☕️ and it wasn’t made right in the beginning and the barista offered another one which was very nice of them 👌🏼.

customer service and food is great! the perfect brunch!

usually when a cafe claims that they have the “best coffee” in sydney, i am a bit sceptical. while i can’t claim that the coffee at the factorygrindwas the best coffee i have ever had in sydney, i can claim that it is one of the best.

the lamb kofta burger was delicious! would definitely recommend this brunch spot.

the factorygrindwas one of those cafes that sat on the edge of my consciousness. i’d noted it always had full tables when i was visiting venues in the renovated st. margarets complex, but had never actually made the time to visit. a recent brunch with a friend demonstrated just how negligent i had been... about a year and a half ago, the factorygrindwas taken over by efe (eddie) topuzlu. while keeping the same name, efe has set about earnestly trying to resurrect the look and the fading reputation of this once-popular spot. with dangling greenery, geometric wallpaper, a curved banquette and light flooding in from two sides, the interior is much more inviting than i was expecting from the old garage exterior. with the afternoon sun still hitting bourke street, we opt to enjoy our late lunch outdoors on the sheltered short street side. efe – if you haven’t already guessed by his name – is turkish, and has placed his own cultural spin on the café’s updated menu. the turkish breakfast board ($24), served all day long, is...

brunch. returned to the factorygrindthis week. we sat outdoors to enjoy the cool breeze and a spot of people-watching. i had high hopes for the panne cook which sounded great on the menu (eggs baked in brioche with smoked salmon, spinach, mushrooms and parmesan) - unfortunately, it didn't quite deliver. presentation was cute with the eggs baked in two hollowed-out brioches with the other fillings nestled underneath. however, the whole dish was rather bland and dry - an extra element like sauce or salsa would've made a huge difference. the eggs were also cooked a tad too long so no gooey yolks to double up as sauce. the spanish-style eggs were much better and there was plenty of sauce to mop up with the sourdough. the best order we had that day though, was the pulled pork sandwich on the lunch menu. a panini packed with tender shreds of pork, slightly spicy thanks to the chipotle and complemented by a refreshing slaw. great flavours and i'd definitely order that again. good coffees and friendly service as expected.

thumbs way way up. the factorygrindis a lovely little cafe that ticks all the boxes: tasty food, good coffee and friendly service. the croque douche seemed to be a cross between a croque monsieur and eggs benny with jamon serrano, gouda and poached eggs on toast with a white sauce. classic flavours done well, it was a richly satisfying dish. we also enjoyed the daily special of sourdough topped with semi-dried tomatoes, feta, smoked salmon and a poached egg. the pine nut pesto gave it extra oomph. we'll definitely be back to try the rest of the interesting menu. the panne cook has my name on it!
