great venue, shame about the doorman. i have been there on numerous occasions and completely agree with all of the other reviews on this page, except for the rude, unproffesional, arrogant little door guy. he works most saturdays and i have seen him there on the odd friday and thursday. for a venue with such a great product downstairs to have the first feel and opinion you get for the venue to be such a bad experience is mystifying???
do something about the door staff before you lose your great reputation!

all of a sudden we have walked into a warm, candle-lit, glowing, all-american, friendly drinking den – the angles start singing and i think that i might just be in heaven. whisky heaven. a subterranean whisky heaven… with boxing stuff on the walls.

amazing whiskey collection. only a half dozen cocktails on the menu, but they are bloody good and i suspect the friendly, knowledgable bar staff would make others. only food is pretzels (complimentary) and a "ploughman's platter" (cheese, shaved ham, a nice possibly homemade gerkin, bread & butter) for $25.

very hidden. go up the alley, turn to the right. no signs. maybe a doorman.

hidden. one of the best places i have visited in sydney. great range of drinks and best spot to hang out with friends. if you’re new i would definitely recommend, it would be a whole lot of new experience.

it's loud it dark it's down the dingy alley , it has chatter and banter and good ol music . it's is surley going to surprise you if you are a first timer but after that it's always going to give you feeling of comfort in chaos. it has jaw dropping collection of whiskeys , super friendly staff who make out of the world cocktails and give whiskey recommendations to knock your socks off . free pretzels all the way . it is a must go for sydney sider

check it out!. paid a visit to this place a few months ago. very cool interior, music was good (bit too loud, hard to chat). had a few vodka drinks with fresh apple (can't remember what they were called) but, really yummy! it's definitely a must-visit if you are in the sydney cbd.

favourite place in the city. this place is awesome, great drinks, unbelievable atmosphere, professional staff. simply love it here!! took few friends over on several occasions and all of them were pleasantly surprised by this hidden gem. i tend to go on mondays to avoid the crowds and have never been disappointed.

what a perfection of a bar.

i was quite proud, thinking i had found it with no help in the first go, but yes think again. if you believe you made it, well you probably haven't. very hidden, but still buzzing with people, because i guess once you've had a taste, you really have no reason not to go back.

if you get there early, like right off work early (5pm), you might be able to grab a seat. i hear at 8 you're pretty much guaranteed to stand around.

my friend got his usual, and although i know nothing about whiskey nor enjoy it very much, this one went down quite well. this is probably an irrelevant review considering it is a whiskey bar and i have hardly anything to comment on the whiskey, but what impressed me was the free pretzels and my mocktail. 😅 and also how as i was about to pay the bartender only charged for the whiskey, and when i asked he swiftly replied with "we don't charge for mocktails!", which was a lovely surprise! 😀

how hard can it be to find place with google maps, so i thought. you walk down the alleyway towards the bar and it opens to a yard with another bar called the barbershop, which i ended up walking into. later found out, it was across the yard with a sketchy entrance, but hey why not. it was dimly lit, cosy and lively little bar. huge assortment of different whiskies displayed on the shelves, with a large board displaying some of the prices. sat down and we were handed a menu, when i called out to the waiters then i found out there was no table service. despite that, the waiters and bartenders were lively, friendly and attentive. they had complimentary pretzels that were topped up when low. felt like a place where you could come with a couple of friends to have a yarn.

cocktails were mainly whisky based, taste good but not the best i'd ever had. they didn't stock my favourite whisky but the large selection whiskies made up for it. whisky prices were all reasonable for a bar at this location. a large selection of whiskies, great atmosphere and service quality made me enjoy the night. table service would've been great but understandable that it's difficult to do in this country.

a popular whiskey bar and for good reason. hidden behind clarerence street, baxter inn is far from a hidden gem as it is always booming friday & saturday nights. i love this place for its extensive whiskey menu & ofc complimentary pretzels! order a special whiskey and you'll be taken to the back room. this place is extremely crowded and busy on weekends but offers plenty of seating and booths for groups, just gotta be quick or patient enough to snatch them up!

i wouldn't really call this a 'secret bar' anymore, but it definitely has the allure of one. this whiskey bar oozes character. amazing whiskey selection, a really nice cocktail selection (including a pretty tasty whiskey sour), great service, and free pretzels. the only thing that could take this to a '5' is live blues or jazz music.

really cool place to hangout, can get little bit too noisy, but the whiskey is worth it. very friendly staff and a wide mix of people young and old.

after looking at the entrance we were little worried but it’s like a surprise. pub got a classic english retro vibe. whatever they serve were class apart nothing to write about food as they do best, whatever they serve.
we tried old classic and lion both were different and surprisingly good.

ambience is what makes this place different from other nearby pub.

amazing selection of whiskey. the place gets extremely busy so get here early if you want a table. we didnt eat anything so can't comment on the food. oh, did i say the whiskey selection is amazing?

awesome atmosphere. after walking down a dark alley and a seedy staircase to the basement, baxter's was like walking into a different era. i loved the jazz music, very loud, but all a part of the atmosphere. the display wall of the various scotches was amazing. awesome atmosphere, definitely recommend when in sydney.
