whisky whisky whisky. that’s what the baxter inn s all about and its quite impressive really. located at 156 clarence street, tbi is accessible during the earlier hours from the front side door although once it gets later, you have to enter from the back – so you’d have to walk down the alley to access. once inside, tbi is a rather dark affair – dimly lit. there’s just enough light so you don’t crash into things but it is very dark and has (again) a prohibition styled saloon feel.

money hungry. this bar is all about making as much money as they can and it shows!

the only food they serve is pretzels. this is because pretzels make you thirsty and want to drink more.

if you decide you would like to stop drinking expensive whisky or cocktails and grab a non-alcoholic drink like a mocktail you are out of luck as they will only offer you apple juice. if you do happen to ask for a non-alcoholic drink, expect to get an unfriendly response from the bar staff who act as though you've make an outrageous request.

so if you are after a bar that is just interested in selling you expensive drinks all night this is definitely the place for you. however, if you are looking for a bar where you don't want to drink alcohol all night you are certainly not made welcome here.

there are very few things worth waiting in line in a nondescript alley. the baxter is totally worth the wait. be sure to try their rittenhaus old fashioned.

...my only complain would be the lack of some bar food and the crowd, but i guess it’s not their fault for being so popular!

a very cosy and interesting bar that you could easily settle in for the night and enjoy their range of whisky and wines. the old cuban cocktail ($17) was very good. service seemed friendly and accommodating.

baxter inn sydney is one of those underground places, which you only reach through a dark and desolate alley, the kind that feels like your kidneys and wallet might suddenly disappear. at the end we are welcomed into the basement of a corner building. this is a prohibition themed (mainly whiskey) bar where the bartenders really know their science and the guests seem relaxed in an altogether different world. you are greeted with candlelight, moustachioed bartenders and bottles hastily stacked upon each other. the bootlegging experience was well-executed with unlimited pretzels and a charming atmosphere. we sipped on our glenmorangie on the rocks, followed by auchentoshan and talisker to early 1900s jazz playing in the background. we did not want to leave.

i was there tonight. vibe & place were cool. but your bouncer was a very obnoxious! my advice: fire him! as educated ppl who have also worked in hospitality we noticed the sign saying capacity 130 & asked the bouncer if the capacity standards were normally 120 or were they now 130. the comments resulted in condescending comments. i suggest you fire the bouncer who was working today between 8:30-9:30 as he is ruin the atmosphere for your otherwise cool sophisticated old style manners bar.

fabulous. the baxter inn delivers exactly what you expect, amazing friendly, knowledgeable service, comfortable atmosphere and great drinks.

there's a limited wine list, but what they have is good.

this is a serious drinkers bar, there are no dolly birds with low cut tops angling for tips, just bartenders who are good at what they do.

you're missing out if you don't visit!

you get a real sense of achievement when you find baxter inn in clarence st - it's like you need a treasure island map. but when you find it - the journey is worth it. this is one of sydney's seriously cool bars - brought to you by the boys from shady pines saloon . down behind a loading dock between 154 and 156 clarence st, sydney city, then go down the fire stairs (not up - although the neighbours will direct you because there is nothing else to, as with shady pines it's about people who know that will tell you how to find it). but just when you think you'll end up in a dirty basement - you open the non-descript fire door and you're transported to baxter inn. photos of boxers on the walls, horse racing, very cool country/ballad music, great drinks. baxter inn has the best selection of single malt whisky in sydney (over 300 of the world's best), an inspiring selection of beers (on tap and bottled), also a fine australian wine list and cocktails to tempt you. there's the original basem

so much scotch. an extremely strong range that will keep you occupied for months, including some of my favourites like ardberg and bunnahabhain. thankfully, the shady pines feel is maintained.
