just changed my review. what amazingly poor or indifferent service. i went to the bar and sat down observing a waitress and waiter behind the bar talking. i waited. i continued waiting. as they left i asked for a menu. "just a second," she replied, then brought me a menu and disappeared downstairs. her tone of voice and attitude distinctly conveyed that i was an inconvenience or annoyance. i walked out in order to post the review of the poor service. i've been agoodcustomer for nearly nine years. i may not return. nice service. this is not how your gain or retain loyal customers.

pleasantly surprised.... i feel like before every review of a mexican or tex-mex restaurant i need to let everyone know i grew up in south texas and have always lived in a border town growing up. since leaving home it has been difficult to find restaurants that even come close to those i grew up with.

teocali's was a pleasant surprise in my kc search forgoodmexican food. we went for dinner last night. there weren't very many people there so we were able to be seated any where we wanted. maybe the only serious draw back of this place is the charge for chips and salsa. i feel like if you're ordering a meal these things should be on the house. if you're just in to drink and talk...go right ahead and charge for the chips and salsa. the salsa was actually reallygoodand it was a nice change to be able to pick out the spices and ingredients involved. generally when we go to mexican places it tastes like "prego" or ketchup with some cumin or chili powder. but kudos to you teocali for havinggoodsalsa.

my wife ordered the fish tacos (best in kc....as says the menu) and they were very good. she liked the sauce that came with it; it was like a creamy chipotle sauce. i had the beef fajitas. let me admit something again. i am unashamedly a fajita snob. outside of home there are only a few places i will venture out and pay for fajitas (chuy's, papasito's, etc)...these weren't bad. they had flavor of their own which was nice. my only complaint would be that they were awfully thin. tasty...but thin. the rice and beans weregoodtoo; both the refried and charro beans.

over all agoodexperience and i will return to try some other items on the menu. perhaps by then i can have my chips and salsa free along with the $10 meal i've purchased. that is the world i wish to live in.

loud but delicious. tok hubby and son to teocali's today. restaurant is small with a tall ceiling so it echos. wait staff are used to the noise level and can understand what you are ordering even if you are struggling to be heard. food is good. chicken and cheee enchiladas were hearty and had agoodchili-based sauce. their carne asada parrilla is a lean but perfectly grilled piece of steak. reminder that they charge for chips and salsa. otherwisegoodfood. will return.

pass on this overpriced texmex!. no thank you! i can't believe this place is well reviewed!!! the reviews are the whole reason we decided to try something different! my boyfriend and i are both from mexican-american families, so we seriously enjoy our mexican food. but this place was a bust!

'firstly- i can't remember the last time i had to pay for chips and salsa in a lower scale mexican restaurant.. not that big of a deal, i really had high hopes for this place after reading all of the positive reviews.

secondly, when our food (actually pretty speedily for a busy friday night) came out, my boyfriend's dish-some sort of pork burrito- was literally topped with what he compared to "ball park nacho cheese from a can". he is not at all a picky or judging eater, so i was completely surprised to hear such a negative comment about his food before i began my dish- enchiladas de espinacas. the "home made red pepper sauce" had absolutely no flavor to it. if i had to compare it to another sauce, i would compare it to be similar to spaghetti sauce from a can, and not thegoodkind.

thirdly, our service was dreadful! the place was packed, and it looked like our server could have been easily overwhelmed, but i seriously saw my server twice! she didn't even bring our food out or get any of our refills! we waited almost twenty minutes before she even came by to drop off our check, and that's literally all she did! no suggestions for dessert or even hanging around long enough for us to request dessert to her, despite our still half full plates (the beans and rice were pretty normal for a mexican place).

i had such positive things to think about this restaurant before going. it was really dissapointing to eat spaghetti sauce and nacho cheese for twenty five dollars. if you're going for drinks and some chips and salsa, this place is perfect for you. but if you're looking for quality mexican food, i seriously recommend you pass on this place and save your money for something more quality.

mediocre. we heardgoodthings but found none of it to be true on our visit. if you want below average k.c. tex-mex from a can then this is the place. the service was horrible and they charged for chips and salsa - which was the only thinggoodwe had.

go for the fish tacos!. ...a friend of mine and i ate here after work on a friday, september 10th. it seems rather off the beaten track on a one way street, but it was well worth finding. i had the tacos puerto vallarta (2 fish tacos, $10.99) the waitress said that they (along with the shrimp tacos) were the house specialty; the menu says that they were voted "best in kansas city", i agree. the tilapia is lightly breaded and seasoned. it was moist and flakey, very well prepared. i would recommend it. the shrimp tacos (2 for $11.99) were apparently sogoodthat my friend wouldn't even let me try them. both dishes are served with a cup of whole pinto beans and spanish rice. we each had a pork tamale ($2.00) (which we were disappointed in; the pork was very dry and stringy) and margaritas ($5.00 each). i liked the margarita but he did not, he thought that there was something carbonated in it and wouldn't drink it. oh well. the queso con jalapenos dip ($3.99) was good, just a slight kick, not too spicy. the bill for two of us came to $38.97 before tax and tip.
