syphay restaurant

soooo good. we get take out from syphay at least once every couple of weeks. thepadthai is awesome - great flavour and the noodles are never over cooked. red curry and green curry are always consistent. lastly, my fave is the fried rice with crab paste. food is always flavourful and consistently prepared. one of the most authentic thai restaurants i have been to in edm, calg, van, and toronto.

ahh... the best thai food i've ever had? or was it laos? i don't know. it just tasted good.. being the cynical ol' me - yeah it was greasy / salty and the service could've been better.

but.

sometimes other things such as quality, taste, flavor, and variety overtake all the negative things and turn me into this biased monster praising this place.

you know, i barely knew what was on the menu because it was all raw text but i got the fried rice, thepadmaow, thepadthai, green curry, deep fried curry chicken, and some spicy seafood curry dish. everything tasted outstanding. there was a really deep, concentrated, asian flavor to all of the dishes. in fact it was so pungent you can almost only appreciate it if you are from these countries.

the portions were small but the grease/salt fills you up. if you have health problems please stay away, you won't appreciate any of this. everyone else though, come give yourself a treat!

comparing to other malaysian/thai-type restaurants, tropika can kiss my ***, viphalay was good but not syphay house good, thai restaurant in causeway bay hk didn't taste that impressive, and boun thai... yeah i'm not even gonna go there - both figuratively and literally.

this place is small and looks like a dump from the outside and the inside with water dripping into buckets and so forth, but none of the customers seemed to care, and neither did i. so if you are a person that wants atmosphere, stay far, far away.

the wait can be long and treacherous so do make a reservation for the weekends. people seem to know about this place and want to keep it a secret from everyone... not no more!

green, yellow, or red?. which curry to get? i drive down calgary trail all the time and never knew this place existed, glad i found it on urban spoon. went with a big group and had a chance to sample many dishes, from apps to seafood topadthai and curry. all were very authentic and delicious.

this is a little bit on the pricier side and depending on what you get you might have to pay extra for the rice, i order the seafood dish and didnt know it didnt come with rice so had to pay a bit more but worth it,padthai is nice generous serving and very good. the waitress was very friendly. its a nice cozy place that you definately have to try once if you like thai or just spicy food!

i had the beefpadsew, which was okay - the noodles though were all chopped up and the there were too many sprouts. there were ingredients i never found in this dish normally. my husband took the shrimppadthai and i really didn’t like the sauce. the food was very saltt and i don’t feel it tasted authentic. portions are big and prices reasonable.
i recommend the syphay platter to share- it was good. service is very slow, i had to get up and ask for water otherwise they would have never came. would i return to this place; no.

the og location for syphay and still upholds good quality for many years. lunch special is always the best deals and thepadthai is a must order. location is a little light on parking and inside is a bit cozy, but it shouldn't stop you from eating here.

honestly this is my favorite thai restaurant in edmonton. i have been coming here even before they did their renovations. this restaurant is tucked away in a little house in calgary trail and you would never expect the amazing food that you'll get inside.

the food is just brilliantly consistent and cooked to perfection. the tom yum soup with basa fish... oh my goodness. it is amazing. the food is on the sweeter side but i prefer it that way. thepadthai is just amazing as is with all the curries.

the ladies are wonderful here, so friendly. i heard that the kitchen consists of just two cooks and two woks! the only thing i can negatively comment on is that sometimes service is a bit slow if they're short on staff and it's a busy night but it's so worth the wait! the ladies are wonderful and i love coming here!

this place is hands down the best thai restaurant in edmonton. i have not been to the downtown location yet but i have heard it's nice. the south side location is not the greatest i'll admit, it looks like a house and it's rather small inside but put all that aside, the food here is absolutely fantastic.

i barely remember the thai names for most of the dishes so i'll basically call it as it is. my girlfriend got their thai iced coffee, very delicious and refreshing. reminds me of vietnamese iced coffee, but a little sweeter in a good way. then we got their crispy curry chicken to snack on. it was piping hot, and supremely crispy on the outside. and the chicken inside was chewy but tender and had this amazing subtle curried flavour to it. for everything else we got their yellow curry with chicken accompanied with coconut rice. the curry was delicious beyond belief, full of flavour and paired with the coconut rice, it was simply heaven on a spoon. next was somepadthai, a true thai classic. simple yet full of flavour and the perfect combination of chewy textures. and lastly, my all time favorites dish is their crispy garlic shrimp. minus the peppers and onions which are also delicious, i only cared about the shrimp. perfectly crunchy, yet soft with a nice blast of garlic flavour but it's not overpowering at all. overall this is my favourite place for thai food. everything here is just divine, portions are nice and after stuffing my face. i had plenty leftover to bring home.

syphay has been the place that has served me the bestpadthai over the years! i've tasted so many versions ofpadthai but syphay's the only one that has the perfect balance of salty, sweet and sour. noodles and shrimps are also cooked to perfection each and every time.

the decor and ambiance of the place has not changed these past years and a bit of tlc wouldn't be a bad thing. in spite of the small space and hard parking though, the place has become busier and busier. make sure to make reservations a few days before you go so you're not waiting 30-40 min if you walk in.

fantastic restaurant. they have some of the best soup, we had the coconut soup with noodle and it was rich yet spicy. great way to start a meal. usually we always get thepadped mee and it is always my favourite, little more kick than thepadthai. this time we also got the spicy squid (cannot remember the dish name) it was great and i would highly recommend. we wanted something like salt and pepper squid and this hit the spot and more.

best thai food i've had in a while. the place seems a bit sketched but it's very cozy inside. thank goodness we've arrived a few min before 6 cuz the place got full pretty quick (which is surprising considering this is a labour day monday). the server was able to handle the whole dining room herself, which is quite impressive. we tried the thai beers. i loved the chang and my fiance liked the singha. we had tom yum paa (could be a little bit spicer), phanang curry with coconut rice (smelled and tasted amazing!) and thepadthai. everything was so filling and flavourful that i was not able fully indulge on thepadthai that everyone has been raving about. and we didn't have room for dessert. (i guess that's good considering the place is a bit more expensive than other thai restaurants. but its totally worth it!) next time, i am definitely bringing more people so we can try more of the menu.

cool hole in the wall type restaurant with decent food. tried the syphay platter (deep fried shrimp three ways appetizer) and theirpadthai with chicken. the appetizer was good with the exception of the shrimp used for the garlic shrimp rolls which my wife found all still had their "sand vein" intact - a bit unappetizing. thepadthai was decent and had good heat, not the best or the worst i've ever had. if it was a touch less tart and more sweet/savory it would have hit the mark. also i realized after eating half of the dish that they forgot to put crushed peanuts on it. will be back but would probably get a different appetizer (maybe the salad rolls) and try a curry.

i have been to syphay many times over the last 10 years and right now their food is excellent. their tom yum soup is made from scratch i'm sure (at one stage it probably wasn't), and thepadthai is really good. we always order vegetarian (either tofu or all vegetables) because i have never liked the texture of the meat (plus i'm a direct-source kinda gal when it comes to meat).

amazing! eat here once and you'll be coming back for more. coconut rice,padthai, crispy chicken, mango ice cream with sweet rice for dessert...all highly recommended!

it is amazing food!! make sure you go earlier than the dinner rush or later otherwise it can be a bit of a wait. but it is so worth it!! every item i have tried such as,padthai, green curry, pineapple fried rice, and fried shrimp are all to die for ❤️ it's a family restaurant and can be a bit slow at times but the food and drinks are amazing. it's a place to check out for sure!!

best thai in edmonton. love love, love, love syphay! thepadthai is the bestpadthai i have ever had. i can also vouch for the gang garee and their signature dessert. amazing. also, i've seen a few reviews about bad service, but everytime i have gone, to both locations, i have received excellent service from attentive, helpful, and welcoming staff.
