awesome. although the service can sometimes be a little curt (though it is improving) this is the best place to get thai food in edmonton. i highly recommend the pad ped mee, pad thai (best i've ever had), pad sin lon, and the phanang curry. i honestly think this is the best thai food i've ever had and i've been to many thai restaurants around the world.

kitchen probably as bad as the exterior!. forgot to add in my last review, if the outside is that disguisting and dirty imagine how the kitchen looks!!! think about where your food is coming from people.

gross!. never returning to this place again. i was against trying it in the first place, and my experiance there has proved my initial thoughts correct. food was mediocer at best, some dishes we could not even eat because the seafood tasted fishy and not fresh. the outside looks like a very sketchy, rough, condemned building - something you'd see in a ghetto? tried to convice the party i was with to not try this new "hole in the wall" place, but was outnumbered. would have rather ate anywhere else, even mcdonalds! if your thinking about going here, save yourself the bad experiance and head next door to a legitimate restaurant that deserves credit tropika!!

favourite thai restaurant. i would have to say this is my favourite thai place in the city. i've been here a few times, most recently last night with a large group (they are normally not open on sundays, but will open up if you reserve with a large enough group).

we didn't order from the menu, we just had the kitchen bring enough food for everyone. we started with an appetitzer platter (spring rolls, garlic and pineapple shrimp) and salad rolls. the peanut sauce that was served with them was delicious.

the next course was my highlight of the night - the soup, in particular the tom yum. it is slightly sweet, sour and spicy, i would say it's my favourite soup. they also served tom kha gai, but it was a little too rich for me with the coconut milk.

then a number of dishes arrived - a green curry, penang curry, stir-fried basil beef, yellow curry seafood, sweet and sour chicken, garlic shrimp and possibly others that i am forgetting. everything was delicious, but quite a few people in the group couldn't handle the spice (though it really wasn't that bad unless you accidentally bit into a pepper).

i would definitely go back, again and again, especially for the soup!

authentic thai. this food is good. don't let the drive by scare you off. if you have traveled to thailand and enjoy the cuisine, you will do well here. i had a curry dish with bamboo shoots and prawns. it was full of flavor and quite spicy. it will make you feel alive:|)

satisfying (:. the other night i was craving pad thai so my boyfriend and i trooped out here. we had a bit of trouble finding parking the back- fyi you can not park at the tropika next door, but you can park across the parking lot from tropika. not really a big difference, but don't get ticketed!

after looking at the menu, i was quickly swayed away from pad thai and ended up going for their red curry with beef, side of coconut rice, and a crispy fried sweet chicken dish. while the portion sizes are kind of small, it turns out that they are very filling. the red curry had tons of bamboo shoots (my favourite c:) and a fairly decent kick spiciness-wise. it went very well, soaked with the fragrant coconut rice. mmm. the chicken dish (which i don't remember the name of) helped cool down our tongues, haha! it had generous sized slivers of onions, red and green peppers, and tons of tofu! my bf didn't notice i ate all the tofu hehe. we also managed to stuff down their rice pudding mango dessert, which is a scoop of vanilla ice cream on a bed of rice pudding with slices of mango on the side, as well as a sweet mango sauce overtop. the rice pudding was very hot as we were eating it, and overall it was delicious, but again the portion size was a bit small.

the total for two of us ended up being something like 36-38 dollars. not too bad for the deliciousness here. i'd like to come back and finally try their pad thai sometime!

best pad thai i have had in edmonton! the veg spring roll wasn't very good tho, but overall it's a cozy little place to eat, the only thing is the outer appearance of the restaurant looks sketchy and rundown. will be back again

pleasant surprise. i have been on the hunt for a good thai restaurant on the southside for awhile now, and i think i just found it! i used to enjoy pad thai on whyte, but that closed down, i found the king and i too expensive, and thai orchid had small portions.

i decided to finally give syphay a try after i had a free entree coupon i had to use from a coupon book. a friend and i arrived at 6:45 on a wednesday, and by 7:15 the restaurant was full. the exterior of the building is a tad sketchy looking; however once my friend and i were inside, we were promptly seated and we each had a cold singha within a few minutes. the restaurant is small, and there was only one waitress, but she was very efficient, and no one seemed to be waiting long for much.

we started off with the beef spring rolls. they were quite tasty and came out piping hot. we then each shared the panag beef curry, and crispy cashew chicken dish, of course with coconut rice on the side. the curry was delicious, filled with lots of veggies and sauce. the cashew chicken was tasty, yet a tad greasy because the chicken was battered and came with lots of chillies!. i would recommend trying this dish with the pan fried chicken instead of breaded.

for people who say this food is too greasy or salty, why are you eating out at a thai restaurant? in my experience most dishes do use a lot of oil. by the sounds of it their soups are tasty, and i am looking forward to trying the salads.

we were both full by the end of the meal, and i had enough to take for lunch the next day. the bill total for 2 main dishes, appetizer, rice and two beer was $53 before discount. so comparable to other thai restaurants.

i will be returning to syphay soon to try my other thai favourites, (pad thai, pla rad prik, and tom yom soup!).

finally!. my co workers & i used to have a favorite thai spot which suddenly stopped operating at lunch so we set out to find a new one. i found this place here at urbanspoon & read a few reviews & because it was close to our workplace decided to try them out. between us we tried the thom yum soup, panang curry with chicken & another dish i forget the name of but it was #27 another curry dish with bamboo shoots and chicken & two of us had the coconut rice as well. the soup came first & we all had to try it because it looked sooo good! it was bursting with mushrooms & was noticeably spicy with a very flavorful taste that had us all drooling for more. the #27 was second & i only had a taste of the sauce which was nice and spicy & then my panang curry with chicken came out with my coconut rice. i found it very satisfying with just the right spice & when combined with the rice i found myself in thai food heaven. to say we found a new home for our thai food fix is an understatement! we ate everything served to us & i felt like i was going to burst but i couldn't stop eating, it was so damn good!! we highly recommend this place & yes the place looks iffy from the outside & parking can be tricky but don't hesitate to try them out if you like thai. 10 out of 10

excellent food, bursting with flavour. extensive menu hard to choose, will have to go back again and again to try the whole menu! service was great, servers very friendly. definitely recommend , although difficult to book reservation as they are very busy and only 12 tables. keep calling you'll get through for mandatory reservation.

hidden gem!. so when i first drove by this place i never gave it a second look. it looks old on the outside and run down. i figured it was just someones dirty looking house. but i have been searching for a good thai restaurant for a while now so i thought i would give it a try.

service here is excellent!i was greeted with a smile right away. they were consistently refilling my drinks for me, and the food came out very quickly.

i started off with the thom yum soup to which i added noodles to. this was great! it was spicy and lemony all at the same time. unlike any other thom yum soup i have ever had. the broth is very thick, almost like the texture of tomato soup. it was filled with tons of mushrooms, seafood, and chicken.

i had a green curry with chicken, broccoli ,and snap peas. this was only ok when i was eating it in the restaurant but i noticed how much more the flavours came out when i reheated the left over the next day.

the coconut rice was fantastic, it was overpowering but just a nice light coconut scent and taste.

last thing i had here was the chicken pad thai. they gave nice big portions and it was very tasty. though, it could have been a bit more spicy.

overall, despite the appearance outside, i would come back again. there wasn't anything i did not like. everything was good.
reviews for this restaurant were pretty much all positive, and my boyfriend and i were looking for a thai restaurant close by, so we decided to be good urbanspoon sports, and give it a go. there was ample parking at the back of the building, which was very convenient. cheesy decorations, but off the bat friendly greeting, and service. we started with the meat spring rolls, and they were incredibly crunchy and delicious. my mom makes the best spring rolls, hands down, but these were a very close second. then we shared the chicken panang curry, and beef pad thai. both dishes were crazy spicy, and full of amazing exotic flavours, which immediately brought the both of us back to the streets of bangkok, where we fell in love with thai food. the food here is definately authentic and made fresh. i found that the menu consists mainly of thai food, and not so much lao food, although lao cuisine doesn't have very many distinctive dishes, to begin with. this was a great experience, and i'm really glad i tried it out. i would reccommend this restaurant to anyone looking for authentic thai flavours.

expected a lot. ..based on reviews. yet i didn't get it. the food was relatively tasty, but very greasy, way way way too expensive, and the atmosphere (and building itself) was a bit of a joke. i just don't get the hype.

great food, mediocre service. i don't know why urbanspoon describes this restaurant is as thai and vietnamese, when it's clearly thai and laos cuisine. there's nothing remotely vietnamese about this place! anyway...

love the food here--it's tasty, consistent and served in a timely fashion. i've been here multiple times with my partner and as part of a large group and we've always enjoyed our meals. the red curry, the shrimp and pineapple curry, pad thai and most of the soups are delicious with the right amount of spice.

the only dish that we didn't like as much were the beef kabobs; it was oddly shaped (very flat) and salty.

in terms of the service...it's not so great. out of the 5 or 6 times i've been to this restaurant, we're usually served by surly waitresses who barely smile or acknowledge you (other than to take your order).

their attitudes come across as abrupt and standoffish. there's almost never any attempt at friendliness, though i will give them credit for being competent. the food usually comes out on time and hot, and the water is always filled. so i suppose it could be worse.

i personally did not like the food as much. the food was too greasy and a bit pricy for the quality. the service was quite poor as well. not sure if i'd go back.

good quality & quanitity. the food had just the right amount of kick for us. though the thai laos salad didn't have the chicken and shrimp options i prefer..only egg..it was very good...all other dishes met or exceeded our expectations...if i am in the area i'll definitely return....just a hint for folks...it fills up very quickly on a saturday nite...advise getting there at opening...but if you have to wait for a table...it is worth it.
