best sushi i have found in kc. i have visited sushiharuat least a dozen times over the last year. the design of the restaurant is very simple and clean. there are about a dozen tables, two tatami rooms and a sushi bar. i have always received excellent service, and the fish is the freshest i have had in kansas city. on top of the freshness, the sushi chefs put together interesting rolls and i absolutely love the crispy rice spicy tuna. i have three young children, and this place is really gracious towards kids. in terms of good for groups, i would be sure to call ahead and reserve one of the tatami rooms.

fabulous sashimi!. my parents and i dined at sushiharulast night for my father's birthday. he's a huge fan of sashimi, so we skipped out on the rolls and ordered the sashimi deluxe andharuspecial. i'm not a big fan of sashimi in kc because the fish is usually not so fresh and you could definitely taste it. however, i felt pleasantly surprised when i bit into my first piece of white fish and was welcomed with the melt-in-your-mouth texture that reminded me of sushi that i had in hong kong, where the fish are caught and sold daily. our sashimi deluxe came with four piece each of tuna, salmon, white fish, yellowtail tuna, albacore (white tuna), and red snapper, in generous cuts. my parents and i were big fans of all of the selection besides the albacore, which is prepared like it is in most sushi restaurants here, seared with a crust of cracked peppercorns. the texture of the white tuna was a little too dry for me, even though the middle was left raw, and i'm not a big fan of such a strong peppercorn flavor. theharuspecial came with a great variety of nigiri (tuna, salmon, red snapper, white fish, shrimp, and albacore) along with three pieces each of tuna, yellowtail, and salmon sashimi, cut smaller than the sashimi deluxe, as well as a spider roll. again, the selection of sashimi and nigiri were extremely fresh and enjoyable and i thought the spider roll was a nice touch when most sushi restaurants would only offer a california. since it was my father's birthday, the sushi bar gave us a free roll that looked like a california fried as a tempura. it had great texture, but the taste was a little too heavy for us. my dad really appreciated the gesture. it was odd though, because i supposed we had gotten the free roll for my father's bday, but no one actually wished him a happy birthday. oh well. that would have been the cherry on top of my sashimi sundae. overall, this little hole-in-the-wall restaurant really surprised me with both the quality and quantity of my sashimi. if you haven't tried raw fish, i would highly, highly recommend you stop by here and get some sashimi. it will change your mind!

this was our first time at sushiharuand i have mixed feelings about it. two of our rolls were fantastic (shaggy dog and king crab), the sensation roll did not taste as i had expected. the staff and manager didn't take notice that we were out of beverages until i sipped loudly with my straw, and it's not like they were that busy!!! we only had our drinks refilled once. i'd give this place 3/5 stars, but i've definitely had better. decent sushi, poor service.

will go again. went to sushiharuduring happy hour. happy hour deals aren't that great, but their regular prices are fairly average for this type of food. ordered 3 types of rolls, the calamari and a couple drinks for $80 w/ tip. the sensation rolls and pretty woman rolls were my favorite! they have an extensive sushi menu with typical, as well as new age type rolls. good find for south kc.

my wife and i have tried many different sushi restaurants in kc, and sushiharuis the best. the decor may not be the best, but the food more than makes up for it. the service is good (marcus is awesome) and for those that complain about speed other posts-keep in mind you're not at a fast food chain. if you want fancy decor - go to ra, but the sushi isn't as good, and it's so loud you can't hear your date.....

delicious and consistant. i love trying new restaurants esp. sushi . sometimes the experience is good and other times not so great. from the first time to each consecutive visit the quality, taste, selection, and price atharuhave been great.! i have tried around 15 different items off the menu and have yet to find one i wasn't pleased with. in comparison to other sushi restaurants i think they have a better and more creative selection of rolls. in addition, thier menu is very detailed in its description(s) and even has pictures!- not that important but helpfull. the only thing that is not terrific is that atmosphere- pretty hum ho- definately no flare. however, if you try this restaurant this will definatenly not be a setback for future visits. hmmm- i think i'll haveharutonight:)

somewhere in between likes it and doesn't like it. this is one of those times that i wish urbanspoon had a choice somewhere in between "likes it" and "doesn't like it".
i wanted to try a different sushi place, so i ordered take out from sushiharufor lunch today. i went with a pretty basic spread of a cucumber salad, tuna nigiri, and a california roll.
the cucumber salad was okay. nothing special. i'm a big fan of sushi gin's cucumber salad, which has a generous portion of crab and a touch of spice. this had neither. it was a larger portion, though.
the tuna nigiri looked amazing. the color of the fish was impressive, an intense purplish red. i was so excited to try it. the first piece was so-so, but the second piece wasn't . the matter running with the grain of the fish was so tough, that i didn't bother trying to eat it. i bit in, and tried to pull the remaining part away with my chopsticks, but it was still stuck to the part in my mouth. i wrestled with it for a second, gave up on the chop sticks, and grabbed that piece with my hands. when i realized that i would have to scrape whatever tuna i could off of the connective tissue, i was a little grossed out, so i threw in the towel. bummer.
the california roll was good, though. not the best i've ever had, but certainly not the worst!
i will definitely give sushiharuanother try. their menu does include quite a large selection of rolls, and there are some that look great. i think next time i'll try dining in.
the staff at the restaurant seemed very friendly, so i do feel guilty stamping sushiharua "doesn't like". unfortunately, this trip the negatives did outweigh the positives, but hopefully next time i'll be able to reverse it to a "likes it".
