sunny spot is the perfect brunch spot. colorful space with an outdoor dining area, great cocktails by brian butler (with recently added bottomless mimosa and bloody mary), and delicious comfortcaribbeanfood from roy choi. a staple dish is the  muh-f*k*n mofongo and eggs (2 fried eggs, ripe plantains, applewood bacon, fennel, garlic, fresh herbs, ginger oil - $11) rather than the hangover plate, i think this one would be a better cure for that hangover! the rich and bold flavors would soothe that headache right away. there's a sweet deal for a boozy brunch: bottomless mimosa, bloody mary, cava, or rum punch (you can mix and match any of them) for $10 with purchase of a main course. if you prefer a craft cocktail instead they are  $11 each. i highly recommend permanent vacation (peychaud's, tequila, hibiscus, lemon, carpano, ginger beer) other than the egg and bacon brunch dishes, you can also get a very satisfying cuban torta (pork terrine, prosciutto, provoline, pickled jalapeno, mus

sunny spot is an aptly named eatery in marina del rey with an expansive enclosed patio which allows glimpses of blue skies even during the grayest of southern california days. our weather this week has been overcast skies with temperatures that have hovered in the 60-70 fahrenheit range. fortunately the smiles and thecaribbeanambiance here would brighten even rainy days, and they have indoor seating if the rumor is true that it truly rains in southern california.    i am always impressed when the service team works together, but i am absolutely astounded when a manager steps in to take orders and clear plates. matt, the manager during a prime time sunday brunch came to take my order, gave it to my waitress, came back, cleared my plate, and asked how everything was, all with the grace of a symphony conductor who was filling in for one of the musicians in his orchestra, never missing a note.    i learned that one reason that brunch is so popular is that they offer bottomless mix and ma

one of the stops i knew i needed to make in this inaugural summer edition of dinela (where hundreds of restaurants citywide offer 3-course prix fixe deals - july 16-27 this time) was chef roy choi's sunny spot. the rebel, rule-breaking chef who melded street flavors into genius korean-mexican cuisine, and trailblazed the whole gourmet food truck craze, had in his latest creation sort of come out of left field.  the concept of sunny spot as most people initially understood it, iscaribbeanflavors in a "roadside cookshop" style venue.  as a huge marketing geek, i was at first a little put off by the garish pink and red branding of the place - thinking it would be a gimmicky monstrosity with over-the-top flavors and presentation.  but i did like the food from his other restaurants/trucks: a-frame, chego and kogi - and i figured dinela was the time to check sunny spot out (the prix fixe deal meant lower investment and unlike many other restaurants in the program, their menu actually looke

with the recent opening of sunny spot, la's resident king of fusion, roy choi has added another sucessful concept to his budding empire. much like a-frame, the newest venture features bold bursts of asian and latin flavors. but where a-frame errs heavier on the asian influences, you might think of sunny spot as its reggae-jamming, sandal-wearing,caribbeanstep-brother. we were looking forward to checking it out when we met up with new friend howard of consuming la . after looking at the caribbean-influenced menu, we were half-expecting the bartender to address us with a 'hey mon'. thankfully, he didn't - thecaribbeantheme is never heavy-handed in either the service or the decor. one place thecaribbeantheme does make its presence strongly felt is on the cocktail menu, where rums from haiti and jamaica, as well as aged rums from nicaragua dominate the list (below). also available is a small selection of wines and a predominatelycaribbeanselection of beers on tap o
