wouldn't recommend the chop salad. basically just lettuce and dressing... barely anything else. very dissatisfied! some of the other meals look good though! and the drinks are nice.

my favorite brunch spot in los angeles! my friends and i love the $17 bottomless mimosas, bloody mary's and rum punch, and the food is amazing. it's a cajun/caribbean take on brunch and they use lots of garlic, spices and seasoning which i love. the "sweet n salty" plantains are amazing and taste like candy. it's a trendy scene and the crowd is always happy and lively. they play fun music and the back patio lets you enjoy the sun while you brunch. fun place for birthdays or group brunches. pictured: muh fkn mofongo

originally decided upon due to location and an online menu featuring no less than six items that sounded great, it was to a packed house that we arrived just minutes past noon and seated after a short delay despite having made reservations it was unfortunately to a substantially truncated menu that we were limited, our overburdened waiter unable to explain why french toast, bread pudding, and a fanciful sundae were suddenly nowhere to be found.

sunny spot is the perfect brunch spot. colorful space with an outdoor dining area, great cocktails by brian butler (with recently added bottomless mimosa and bloody mary), and delicious comfort caribbean food from roy choi. a staple dish is the  muh-f*k*n mofongo and eggs (2 fried eggs, ripe plantains, applewood bacon, fennel, garlic, fresh herbs, ginger oil - $11) rather than the hangover plate, i think this one would be a better cure for that hangover! the rich and bold flavors would soothe that headache right away. there's a sweet deal for a boozy brunch: bottomless mimosa, bloody mary, cava, or rum punch (you can mix and match any of them) for $10 with purchase of a main course. if you prefer a craft cocktail instead they are  $11 each. i highly recommend permanent vacation (peychaud's, tequila, hibiscus, lemon, carpano, ginger beer) other than the egg and bacon brunch dishes, you can also get a very satisfying cuban torta (pork terrine, prosciutto, provoline, pickled jalapeno, mus

sunny spot is an aptly named eatery in marina del rey with an expansive enclosed patio which allows glimpses of blue skies even during the grayest of southern california days. our weather this week has been overcast skies with temperatures that have hovered in the 60-70 fahrenheit range. fortunately the smiles and the caribbean ambiance here would brighten even rainy days, and they have indoor seating if the rumor is true that it truly rains in southern california.    i am always impressed when the service team works together, but i am absolutely astounded when a manager steps in to take orders and clear plates. matt, the manager during a prime time sunday brunch came to take my order, gave it to my waitress, came back, cleared my plate, and asked how everything was, all with the grace of a symphony conductor who was filling in for one of the musicians in his orchestra, never missing a note.    i learned that one reason that brunch is so popular is that they offer bottomless mix and ma

while everything was delicious, the unique touches to the pancakes and french toast transformed them from standard brunch fare into standouts. similarly elevated by its components was the sunfire chicken salad, which my table mates and i piled onto our plates even with heavier options nearby. also not to be missed are the steak sandwich with perfectly crusty ciabatta and the juicy two-fisted cheeseburger. oh, and all of the desserts. so, like i said, everything...

i’m not sure if it was because we were a large group, or if there was only one server, but we were pretty much abandoned all night long. in fact the only three times i saw our server was to place our drink orders, place our food orders, and get our check. there wasn’t a mid-dinner check-in. drink #2 had to be ordered directly from the bar. and dessert was out of the question as we’d already been there for more than 2 ho

one of the stops i knew i needed to make in this inaugural summer edition of dinela (where hundreds of restaurants citywide offer 3-course prix fixe deals - july 16-27 this time) was chef roy choi's sunny spot. the rebel, rule-breaking chef who melded street flavors into genius korean-mexican cuisine, and trailblazed the whole gourmet food truck craze, had in his latest creation sort of come out of left field.  the concept of sunny spot as most people initially understood it, is caribbean flavors in a "roadside cookshop" style venue.  as a huge marketing geek, i was at first a little put off by the garish pink and red branding of the place - thinking it would be a gimmicky monstrosity with over-the-top flavors and presentation.  but i did like the food from his other restaurants/trucks: a-frame, chego and kogi - and i figured dinela was the time to check sunny spot out (the prix fixe deal meant lower investment and unlike many other restaurants in the program, their menu actually looke

sunny spot, the much feted roy choi's newest in the former beechwood space in venice trades in his emboldened asian flavors for a pan-caribbean menu and vibe. the once starkly lined room is now a playpen of color with island music blaring and a hip but relaxed crowd nibbling on his newest creations while sipping on brian butler's (a-frame) cocktail creations which lean heavily on rum.

oh sunny spot, i already feel like have a complex relationship with this space because i love roy choi. i've been to this restaurant twice now. once for my birthday when they just opened and again this passed weekend. i love that they blast reggae music in la. it's very trendy and cute. they did a good job of making the crowd urban chic. it's still casual enough to accommodate any person that enjoys rum and isn't too specific when it comes to the definition of, "carribean". upon my first visit i had high expectations because it was my birthday. the hostesses were warm and welcoming and they even accommodated me when my number of guest shifted ( while we were in the lounge). the manager on the other hand was very rude to his staff. he was really nice to me of course but there was clearly a miscommunication and he didnt want us seated before everyone arrived. he yelled at the wrong host and realized he was being watched and came over and welcomed us. i wish i could remember his name. he had dark hair, thick brows, and he could have been italian or latino. he was not a nice guy. the lounge was very loud which i didn't mind because i was in celebration mode. if you want to chat i'd recommend the dining room. the drinks rock out! bartenders are awesome and the lounge waiters slow. they seem like great people but the sequence of service is very weak in terms of communication. i waited 10 minutes for utensils after my food came to the table ( in the lounge). my second visit i had to find a host to get a lounge server. as i said before if you are dining or there for dinner go to the dining room. the lounge does better in music and cocktails. i will say the calamari and burger are to die for. they are both great for appetizers and i had the burger twice. this is coming from a person that used to be a raw foodist. they always run out of wings and i have yet to try them. if you want wings get there early. furthermore, i will return for the cocktails alone. i wouldn't bring my mom, it's just too noisy for an older crowd.

overall, a bit mixed. some dishes worked, some not as much. some had very strong flavors, and some surprising didn’t. but i think that the dishes that really worked were very good. the type of food here is just good comfort food-esque of cuisine, so it’s not going to amaze people. think of sunny spot as a poor man’s version of a-frame, or a-frame’s cousin from out of the country. but i can definitely see myself coming here on occasion, and trying some of the other dishes on the menu.
