beautiful hiddenplacearound the corner next to martin place. operating only takeaway during the covid times. fresh high quality bbq meat, good portions, economical - all that sums up an ideal quick lunch meal. they are also selling their alcohol for discounted prices. soon to open dine in and will definitely go back for that experience.

my friend and i dined at suminoya for their lunch meal set and we were thoroughly impressed with the quantity and quality of the food! we ordered the two choices set where you receive your choice of two meats, rice, salad and miso soup. it doesn't sound like much but we left feeling completely full and satisfied. all the wagyu beef choices we had cooked to marbled perfection on the diy grill and literally melted in our mouths. it was so amazing! the duck was also recommended to us and it was fantastic so i recommend that if you're ordering another option! cool jazz music, atmosphere and the friendly service make thisplacea winner to me

probably my favourite japanese bbq in the cbd, most people that venture to the cbd for jap bbq generally suminoya is theplacethey’d go to. they have really good set buffett options, definitely go for the premium $60 option with the wagyu beef, worth the extra $10. also the green tea ice cream is the best sydney has to offer!!

the suminoya buffet is one of our old favourites when it comes to a satisfying japanese yakiniku bbq smorgasbord for group catch ups, so i was glad to find out that they had added a few new items onto the menu when we visited for dinner recently. the restaurant is tucked away in a lane way near martinplaceand for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of trying the suminoya buffet before – the set up is essentially that you choose the level of menu you’d like to order from, 60 minutes to order whatever you’d like off that menu (via their handy ipad ordering system) and then 90 minutes to eat your meal. each table is equipped with tabletop bbqs for you to cook your chosen meats and huge extractor fans so you don’t end up smelling too much like your food at the end of it all.

hidden delight. when dee suggested suminoya for lunch, i could not resist the proposal. although hidden in hoskingsplacenot far from the corner of martinplaceand pitt street, the set up offered a wood colour ambience, with an emphasis on grills, varying seating places and a buffet with good repute. what struck me first when i saw my bento lunch box a (with nigri sushi as my option and spinach as the day's special dish) was definitely the freshness of the raw ingredients - tender, fatty and with character. a bit short on the essential green mustard but you are given more if you ask! service was quick, which fitted well with the lunchtime crowds. the menu was easy and logical to help select what we wanted.

used to be a frequent customer here, at least once a month for over 5 years, until i missed two of the bookings, they messaged and said if i dont show up again they'll put me on a blacklist. i missed 2 bookings out of the hundred times ive been there, and this is how they treat their customer. havent been back since this happened, and i found a much betterplacethat i am willing to take my friends and family to. and thisplaceused to be $48 pp, and now sitting at $75 pp, i might as well go somewhere that may be $85 but provides much better service.

a goodplace. 60 dollar each person. the beef is awesome. the time is too short...only 60 minutes for order... the ice cream is really not enough to eat. crowded ... i hope the order time could be longer!

we were attracted by the menu and high rating score, but the experience was extremely disappointing. we expected to have a la carte menu, however only buffet was available upon arrival. we went with the $65 choice but the meat selection was very limited on this price. the meat quality was just average. wondering it was really wagyu or not. karubi is a kind of fatty meat, but the one they served was apparently too fat. their vegetable dish portion also left us speechless. at the beginning we ordered one portion of vegetable (mushroom, onion and zucchini), and there really came just one piece of each...

we expected to have charcoal bbq as sumi means charcoal in japanese. but they just use gas and it was extremely hard to control. the gas unit only heats an inch diameter, so it took very long to cook.

basic service of a bbq restaurant all has a price here. $2 for grill exchange, $3 for a cup of warm tea..

with the same price (even lower price) we believe there are many better choices. don't trust the rating so much. thisplacewas really over priced and over rated.

i have been here once which impressed me with its very good service and nice food but the second time ive been here was a disaster i was badly treated by the japanese guy in reception.he seems got some atitude that day.he was very impatient when explaining the booking situation and and never said sorry just telling us they are all fully booked then give me a face like i don't care if you want to have dinner here or not.
japanese restaurants are famous for their good services.but i can never feel it that day in suminoya. be more patient and say sorry isn't a very hard thing for you to to as a waiter! thisplace is really ruining japanese restaurants good reputation!really disappointing!

great atmosphere and super speedy service! thisplaceis a bit pricey for those who might be on a budget but it's worthy a try! we got the $60 bbq buffet deal with $6 all you can drink (limited selection). the meat was good and fatty if you enjoy that. i really enjoyed the pork rib and wagyu beef halami. lots of variety in the sides (corn, sashimi, miso soup etc.). probably wouldn't come back again just because of the price but if you're ever in the cbd and want to try jap bbq, check it out! also gr8 sesame ice cream!!

came here on a wednesday night with a group of friends and we had the $60 buffet. the range of meat was good, but sashimi was definitely my favourite. both the scallops and salmon were absolutely amazing and loved by all of us. i also think the eel rice was very delicious and that alone would make it worth coming to this restaurant for me. the location was not the easiest one to find and theplacewas a bit cramped but i’d recommend the food.

tucked in a small street in sydney cbd is the best japanese buffet bbq ever! 

i came here for my friends birthday for 14 people and we enjoyed all the selections offered! 
the seating here is quite tight so our table arrangement was not a long table but side by side tables. 
we chose the premium buffet selection ($60 each) which also included the selection from the gourmet buffet as well. 

my favourite dishes were the garlic prawns, all beef wagyu selections and prawn salad. the slushy they had for the day was grape flavour and i liked it. icecream dessert was okay, the green tea was more icey than the soft icecream texture and my friend enjoyed the sesame icecream. 

overall great experience and would recommend coming back here again! 
the waitresses were very patient as we kept ordering on the ipad. 
bookings here are required as it was very busy when we went on a saturday night!

bestplacefor japanese bbq imo. the flavour of the meat here is indescribable it’s just amazing. me and my wife come here at least once a month. i’ve tried plenty of other places and thisplacejust wins me over every time.

japanese hidden bbq buffet

thisplaceis hidden like the hidden leaf village and love the atmosphere, it's very unique.as you enter the building you can smell the aroma of the beef. once you enter the restaurant, all the staff will greet you in japanese.

the bbq is small but the quality of the meat was excellent. it was juicy and i couldn't stop eating, there was no room to talk. i would recommend the wagyu ribs and the beef cubes, cook them medium rare and it's soooooo good! there's a lot of selections on the menu and they serve you in small portions so you don't waste any food. love the mushrooms but they serve it in half a when you order one.

the sashimi was fresh and most of the food was in excellent quality. they serve kimchi as well and it taste really good. it's 70 dollars per person but they do a better quality meat than any other places that i've been to.

green tea ice cream was all you can eat as well, i personally love it and order about 6 servings. it was worth it! staff was friendly, they asked me how was my food and took every plate that wasn't been used. this is a greatplaceto eat with mates.

at first a $60pp all you can eat japanese bbq (drinks not included) may sound a little steep, but when you consider there's also endless sashimi on the menu, it was definitely more then worth it, and that's why thisplaceis always busy. we booked & came early. it's a little hard to find, being at the back of a dead end street in between buildings. we sat downstairs so was a bit stuffy. but it didn't matter when the food started coming, you only have a 60mins range to order & an extra 30mins to eat. given the beef tongue was restricted to only 1 plate per person we got that first to try, it was damn delicious. thinly sliced, so cooks quickly, it has a crisp chewy texture (爽口), well marinaded in soy, perfect with a beer (or on its own). the other cuts of meat were ok, the wagyu was the next best, the ribs with the bone were bit thick so not as good as others. the sashimi were good quality. the sides were ok, but not really what you're there for anyway. i enjoyed it so much, i came back for a second visit in 2 weeks with different friends. definitely highly recommended.
