the time limit on ordering somewhat sours the experience because you feel rushed. the meat was all very tender certainly well marinated and seasoned. the sushimi was cut much too thick - the pieces were chunks rather than nicely sliced - which takes away from the eating experience and flavour. overall, it was alright, but it's not somewhere i would go often.

this is japanese buffet at its finest. suminoya’s concept is simple: choose a set menu and go crazy! you have 60 minutes to order and the remainder 30 minutes to eat, so all in all the buffet is 90 minutes long.

there are 3 types of packages: standard, gourmet (with sashimi, each person limited to one plate of ox tongue ) and deluxe (unlimited ox tongue). note that the buffet option is only available for dinner and on weekend dinners, diners have to opt for either the gourmet or deluxe package.

love it:
1. you can order using ipads, which circumvents the otherwise awkward problem of having to signal the waiter every time you want a double helping of wagyu short rib. the food was very prompt, which is often not the case in all you can eat restaurants. zero faults.
2. great choice: they have a really good selection of meat and sashimi, and we managed to sample almost everything. particularly loved the wagyu short rib, scallops, corn, wagyu steak and scampi. everything is really well marinated and tastes delightfully fresh. sashimi was fresh and clearly of a decent cut. just beware when ordering that one serve means one piece, so make sure you order more than one!

not a fan of:
1. the raw beef had way too much sesame oil in it, drowning the taste of the beef. avoid if not a fan.
2. 60 minutes is too short a time as we spent most of the hour in a frantic cycle of cooking and ordering. however this appears to be the standard time for most japanese all you can eats do not really a pet peeve relating to suminoya pet se.

verdict: excellent value for money. suminoya doesn’t skimp on quality and for unlimited meat, sashimi and ice cream i don’t think i can ask for more.

i was excited upon seeing all the good review but i would honestly prefer to go to a-la carte japanese bbq, the standard buffet (seafood and meat) 50$ pp has a limit on ox tongue which was one portion per person (too little)🤦🏼‍♀️ and the rest of the meat was so so but overly dressed with really sweet soy(fine if u have sweet tooth) the quality of the meat was pretty good so it was a shame that they overdressed it. i do not recommend going downstairs if you are here for a dinner catch up, voice echoes and it was way too noisy even when there was only one other table. worth trying but will not go back 🙂

food is so so but really really bad service. when i kindly asked a staff where should i put the umbrella, she said nothing and just take my umbrella away rudely. when i asked whether i can order food instead of having buffet, she said only buffet. but half an hour later, the next table ordered food. i ask the staff why, they say they were busy at that time and can only serve buffet. excuse me??? that's make no sense at all. bad restaurant. i think no one want to walk in this place and ruin the whole day.

suminoya has a large selection of food with the premium buffet option so we were able to try a lot of different things on the menu. service was fast and food was fresh! my favourite dishes was the beef yukke, scallop sashimi and the crab cheese salad. i enjoyed dining here and i would come back again

great food and good service marred by poor seating arrangements for groups larger than 4, especially if it's an odd number of people. recommend going on a date or double date but not for a lunch, work party or big outing and the like.

the set choices for a la carte were excellent. if you are looking for a nice yakiniku place, and place importance on beef, this place will not disappoint. very good value for money. the restaurant ambience is quite nice although a tad crowded.

suminoya is an authentic japanese restaurant specialising in yakiniku aka "grilled meat" since 2000. it is literally tucked away in hosking place because we walked past the little alleyway at first before realising we had missed it. during the day they have a lunch menu consisting of a range of a la carte dishes, bbq sets (select up to two to four choices of meats and it comes with rice, miso soup and salad) and bento boxes. however their buffet dinner menu is where you can get the best bang for your buck. choose from three types of buffet: gourmet ($50pp and only available mon, tues and wed), premium ($60pp) and premium with unlimited beef tongue ($65). there is also a regular a la carte menu too if your stomach is not prepared for all-you-can-eat with a selection of sashimi, premium cuts of beef, salads and sides, seafood and more.

really bad experience, it was good several years ago, but now just feel terrible about wagyu they served. even let me doubting whether it's wagyu or not.

thanks to washoku lovers, we now call japanese bbq one of favourite types of restaurants. we visited suminoya to try their “all you can eat premium bbq”. with price ranging between $50-$65 for one and a half hours, and half an hour more to sit and consume the ordered food. there are a few rules – order only as you plan to eat as food wastage is highly discouraged, as it should be.

food: 8
service: 4/10 (sometimes 3 or even lower)
location: 10 (2' walk from martin place station)

a regular customer here, however, i'm giving suminoya 3 stars because of the service. the waitresses barely speak any english and it's very hard to communicate with them. the head waitress is hostile and not friendly at all, she made me and my partner feel uncomfortable and weird because we ordered more of what we enjoyed eating.
the staff kept "forgetting" your orders and the portion of food wasn't right either.
however, meat and other seafood sashimi are nice, i've learnt that if they forgot your orders, just keep ordering from the ipad and that would do the trick!!

note that they're usually booked out on friday and saturday evening so making reservations is a good idea.

the service was very slow during our weekday lunch. also the serves for the bbq seemed to have shrunk. overall a bit disappointed based on previous bbq buffets.

i had to become a meat eater last night when we decided to celebrate my graduation here. haven't had an all you can eat japanese barbecue in a while. 60 minutes for order and total of 90 minutes of food time. the meat was very tasty, especially the wagyu and beef tongue. not too many choices but a very decent selection. for side dishes, the sashimi's alright, but i really loved the wasatako (wasabi squid) and the raw beef salad. the prawns were not satisfactory but i'll let them get away with it. very helpful and friendly service and food comes really quickly. apparently they are really strict with their leftover policy, so be careful not to over order.

okay, i love this place. not too cheap, but worth it for a treat. it is generous considering you can get the all-you-can-eat with very top quality beef. there isn't any other place that i know of which serves great food generously at a fair-enough price. usually it is really busy, and i've been here several times. would love to go back anytime i can. service is efficient.
