there is great bbq here, but the chopped isn't it.. i usually choose other bbq joints for a variety of reasons. i have eaten at both locations, off & on, for 50 years, and probably will come from time to time, in the future, but their limited menu, horrible bbq slaw, the dry, oblong hush puppies, and the way they mince(grind, really) theirporkbbq leaves much to be desired when other choices are available. and their sliced bbq not an option at $10 per pound.

i will still pickup a shoulder from time to time because their bbq is excellent lexington style, it is the processing i don't care for. i also buy both their dipping sauce & hot sauce, and i give them high marks on both. they have started serving bbq chicken, but it has a sweet tomato sauce i don't care for. the ffs are awful, and so is the hot dog.

even for a bbq joint, they serve one of the worst hot dog in the entire state. i have no idea how you can get chili to that consistency. their waitstaff service is always great, though there is some complacency in the checkout folks. the folks in greensboro seem to love this place and have since 1953 when the original stamey's opened as a drive-in with curb service. and other folks across the state give it high marks also. i just think it could be much better, like its lexington counterparts. i would give this place 2 stars because of the service, the sauces, and the shoulders.

best barbecue in nc. you can taste the difference 100% wood cookedporkbarbecue makes. they have been doing it the same time honored way since 1930!!! great service. they are super fast.

they have some of the most affordable prices i have ever encountered in my travels.

i would drive 200 miles out of my way for a stameys sandwich, hushpuppies and peach cobbler.

some people think stamey's is a great lexington style bbq restaurant, but i feel it is simply an average one.  it is perfectly adequate, but in a bbq-intensive region like the piedmont triad, adequate doesn't get you far enough.  there are several other "q" restaurants in the area i prefer over stamey's, including little richards, bib's, and camel city bbq in winston, and kepley's and country bbq in high point.  the actualporkat stamey's has a good smokey flavor (perhaps a bit smokier than i would like), but was too dry.  their sauce is a "dip" style and doesn't do that much to moisten things.  however, the prices are very affordable, and the ambiance has that old bbq lodge atmosphere that is becoming a thing of the past in many places.  overall, i give stamey's a solid 3.5, but better options exist.  i prefer this location to the battleground ave one - it has a nicer feel, with tall ceilings and many windows.

not bad, but merely average.. had choppedporkand chicken. the bbq sauce was great, but the chicken was all skin with very little meat. plus it was extremely dry. the choppedporkwas ok. the service was below average.

i can’t say enough good things about stamey’s and i hope to make it back very soon. it is the definition of a 5 whole hog plate of choppedporkbarbecue and to me, also the definition of a 5 whole hog joint.

classic lexington style barbecue. try the choppedporksandwich with hush puppies. if you prefer eastern style, vinegar sauce, their's is very good. the barbecued chicken is also a favorite. the brunswick stew is a little too much like vegetable soup for me. the service is fast and friendly. if you have any room left try the homemade peach cobbler. located right across from the coliseum and aquatics center.

posted thu, 06/13/2013 - 17:29 by smoke daddy tour:  north carolina tour joint:  stameys barbecue we like stamey's!  the outstanding cobblers are followed closely by theporkand atmosphere.  solid.  we were so busy eating that we forgot to take pictures of the spread... oops.  enjoy the photos of the smokehouse.  main fare: sliced - beautiful.  pink smoke ring extends all the way through the meat.  outside is extra smoky.  excellent. chopped - machine chopped, but not mushy.  flavors meld together to form a very fine whole.  we decide to order sandwiches rather than full trays of finely chopped pork. other fare: slaw - very good. no cream at all.  vinegar + sweetness = good balance. brunswick stew - veggies (including peas) in a robust broth.  like a hearty vegetable beef soup, complete with tater squares. corn pups - hot. fresh.  not as sweet as some we've had. dip - table dip is red and chock full 'o spices peach and cherry cobblers are both outstanding... but i give the edge to the

wood cooked! real special. in town on business. was ready for some local flavor. stameys barbecue was recommended by multiple people.

i have to say wow. i was impressed with the quality of all the offerings plus the super fast service. the star was the large chopped barbecueporkplate! a ample serving of the wood pit cooked pork, stameys own tangy slaw and hushpuppies (i learned was fried cornbread with a hint of onion. no pre made mixes here. after finishing off the homemade peach cobbler (crust was to die for...) i decided to ask for a tour of the wood fired pits across the parking lot where they cook the pork. i was lucky that the manager had time to take me through it. the "pit-masters" where hard at work turning theporkshoulders when we arrived. they use 100% hardwood cooking process. i felt like i was stuck in a tasty time-warp.

if you get near greensboro, nc you must stop by this establishment. i wish they would open a branch in milwaukee!!!!

been eating stameys for over 40 years and still liking it.located across tfom the greensboro colisiem.coming inside you will see pics of pres. bush when he ate there.loyal wait staff and great service in family setting .counter seats ,booths or tables ,take you pic.hickory slow cooked bbq with vinager based sauce is hard to beat.hot dogs all the way with bbq slaw is good with a chopped sandwich and an order of hushpuppies .the fries are not my favorite .the dessert looks great but i never have room for dessert. ask for extra "dip" with your bbq plate or buy the mild suace(dip) to go with your take out order.they offer meals for 4 or 6 people (to go)and when availabe the frozen bbq is a better deal .get a frozen pound &1/2 to take on out of town trips (about $10) .granny likes the baggedporkskins .these are hard skins and not the puffy type ...got to go to stameys now.

previous comment should say: food was not exceptionally good

-----16 jul, 2010-----

very very fast, i got my drink and food within 5 min of entering the place. as for the food, it was exceptionally good, chicken was dry, but one could get away with it since it was drenched in sauce.porkwasn't bad, wasn't great. i supposed for the money (i spent $7 for a large plate of food) it's a good buy. personally i'd rather spend more and het better food, but i can see the appeal of fast service for a cheap price.

classic lexington style bbq. for those not from nc, when we say bbq we mean chopped/pulled/slicedporkfrom typically a smoked pig. most places slow roast their swine in smokehouses with hickory and variety of other woods. one test to see if you have a good bbq joint is to look around back for a pile of wood and/or a smokehouse.

stamey's is where i grew up going for bbq. in nc there are two types of bbq, western (or lexington style) and eastern. western uses a tomato based sauce while the east prefers a more "pure" vinegar. debate is fierce at times over what's best. i personally like both, it just depends on how its cooked.

stamey's produces a wonderful lexington styleporkfor a great price. out of towners will be shocked at the affordability. when you come for the first time go for the whole experience. get a chopped plate with coleslaw and hushpuppies and be sure to have some cobbler with ice cream for dessert. you can wash it all down with one of the south's finest examples of sweet tea. enjoy!
